@@GuruMukhi-b5p The Tabla is the most outstanding percussion instrument and only a full drum-set is similar in complexity, but much louder. Tabla is relatively quiet and if you play with much louder percussionists, especially drums, it goes under and you have even problems hearing yourself. With 50+ years old audio-tech, there wasn't a chance mixing those differences and even today it's challenging. Zakir Ji was only using Tabla with Shakti because there was no drummer and so his playing was dominant enough. This doesn't make Dholak a bad instrument, but Zakir Ji wasn't a Dholak-player like Shri Naveen Sharma is. As a Tabla-player you will always choose playing Tabla first if it's appropriate. I'm also playing Tabla first and in a similar band-scenario I would pick a Djembe, Darbuka or higher pitched frame-drum instead.
arrey yeah hindustani concert nahin yeh toh fusion music of 70s hain. kya energy hain uska. usko appreciate karo. buri baat na karo kyunki aapko pata nahi yeh kaisa genre hain.

He wasn't renowned at that time and probably playing Dhokak by choice, because Tabla was not loud enough 'against' two much louder percussionists.
