FreePSXBoot - A New PS1 Softmod Method! Overview and Tutorial (2021)

- FreePSXBoot was inspired by the recent TonyHax, and now we have another great PS1 softmod to enjoy! In a nutshell, we are running Unirom from a PS1 memory card, so that means no need to find a PS1 with a parallel port and a cheat device plugin device to run Unirom.
FreePSXBoot is similar and also different when compared to TonyHax. For more details on what FreePSXBoot is, and how to set it up and use it, see the video. Enjoy!

Sony reversed there decision they are gonna keep the ps store open for ps3 plus we can go on other ps stores from other countries i noticed hong kong ps store has some games that are not available on USA PS store

this is awesome. Basically means you dont need a modchip in your ps1 anymore right? This is not useful for ps1 with modchips already right?
If you have a modchip, continue that route. For people who have no modchip, FreePSXBoot or TonyHax is made for you! ❤😍
I like the Commodore theme.. Commodore 64 hacking scene of the 1980's. I still use a Commodore 64C from time to time, reminds me of the demo and hacking scene on C64.

I think so but give it a try if you have a game to test as I don't have any.
Actually all NTSC-J consoles (such as 1000,3000,3500,5000,5500,7000,7500,9000) cannot run backup cd though they could run freepsxboot.
Question. I have a GameShark Pro. If I do this mod, after hitting play and it boots the backup disc, will I be able to still use my GameShark? It’s a parallel port GameShark pro where you can press button in game and pull up a hack menu that lets you create gs codes. Normally, you boot ps and it loads into the GameShark where you pick codes you want to use them launch game. Then in game press GS button and it pops the menu up for memory editor etc. but I’m wondering since GS pro 3.0 boots into GS menu first, which will boot first? The mod or the GS menu? And if it’s the mod booting, when I hit play will it allow me to press the GS button for menu or no.
This is outside my knowledge of expertise, best to ask on psx-scene.com forums and a dev can answer this better
Hey man, love your videos. But I have a doubt, instead of using our PC for smb server for PS2 can we use an android phone as an smb server and share ganes from the mobile phone??
Please look into this doubt. I wanted this because sometimes my laptop would just show can't connect to wifi its very irritating.

Let's think about this. Even if you are able to make the android phone be the smb server, how are you physically going to connect the PS2 to the phone to access the smb share? A OTG usb, and then a USB to Ethernet adapter?
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia the PS2 would be connected to a router via a ethernet port and the phoen would be connected to the router via wifi. Its what I normally use.
where do you save and load games from? Can you remove and add a blank memory card while running?
I have the SCPH-101 PSone, but I'm not sure if its bios 4.4 or 4.5 as it says October 2000 on the bottom of it. There's from 2000-03-24 and 2000-05-25 on the GitHub so I'm wondering which one I do for my PSone?? Not sure but I'm thinking the 05-25 since its closer to October. I can do it probably fairly easy on my ps 2 with fmcb and mcav20 if I just knew which one to download. lol!! 😌 I may just have to wait. Maybe that ones not compatible yet.

What CD did you use during the tutorial? The one i used cant be read but works with the original cds
The game was a cd-r, but you need a way to install freepsxboot though to memory card first.
Can you do all of this with third party memory cards or do they have to be official sony ones? Also, do you have a guide on how to burn the games correctly to disc?
I think non Sony memory cards are fine. Burning discs I use imgburn, select the bin or cue file and burn at half speed of cd-r max speed
Hey i want to ask something. I use my hard drive to play games like a usb with a sata cable to the usb port(I dont use WINHIP). If i buy a sata connector for hdd port in the ps2 can i play these games like this or i have to onstall games with WINHIP?
Winhiip since it is looking for a specific format when using the hard drive port.
The only sad thing about the Ps1 you can't play games from a hard drive, i mean a proper hard drive like the ps2. i have 15 ps1 consoles, 35 ps2 consoles, some chipped with 2tb hard drives in full of games, also have a few modified wii's with 500gb external hard drives full of games and HDloader.
Don't use the 20210414 v1.0 files from the release page. Use the 20210419 update images on the front Github page. They fixed a lot and it works much better.

Yes, or after you boot then put the normal one in slot 1.

I think the answer is yes, give it a try. I don't have any import discs as I have a modchip ps1.

Question: when you flash the mcd file to the ps1 memory card, does it completely corrupt the MC or can you "unflash" it afterwards to recover your saves etc?
@The MAUZ False. As soon as you try to even load the FreePSXBoot Memory Card even in the in-game save manager it will freeze. Also, MCA v2 will freeze upon trying to read a FreePSXBoot Memory Card as well. Either you straight up chose to lie or you read stuff from people claiming these things while never bothering to test it yourself.
@The MAUZ Alright I concede on the fact of OddWorld: Abe's Oddysee and Cool Boarders 4 are able to clear the exploit but it is stated on the GitHub that it won't work on every version of the exploit. There is some truth after all to some things you said but it seems to be highly dependent on the version of hardware and software. Having more information on the exact hardware versions that facilitate the restoration of the original card functionality would be most beneficial.
@The MAUZ Oh. I tried with Abe's Oddysee and some other game but couldn't get it to wipe either. I'm gonna have to try WipEout. Will report back.
EDIT: Worked like a bloody charm. Thanks a bunch! Incidentally, I kind of love the fact that WipEout is what ultimately allowed me to wipe the memory card.

I haven't done a tunngle style video since the shutdown many years ago. I'll put it on my list to review and check it out.
After a few times working now It says "fastload locating cdrom:psx.exe" and nothing happens..it's something wrong?
Not sure about that one, either make issue on GitHub or possible reinstall freepsxboot?
Ehi i have a problem on PS1 slim SCPH-102. I do the same process, but when i have to press on "Memory cards" it just open the memcards control panel. I saw there are two different .cmd files for SCPH-102 and i tried both of them, but it won't work. What can i do?

Can Unirom boot games from any region ? Meaning, is Tonyhax still useful in itself ?

Tutorials online says I must remove the "special" memory card after the boot process and insert a regular one, when I should do the swap? Or maybe I can use freepsxboot just to install unirom on a card in the parallel i/o port?

Not sure, just play around with it. I always have the special memory card in slot 1.
do you know if there are ways to play backup ps1 game on scph 39001? i have flip top and wished the disc swap program that works on slims worked on the earlier models but to no avail
Popstarter or modchip is only solutions, or get a cheap ps1 used and do freepsxboot or tonyhax.
Got excited until finding out it still does not unlock NTSC-J to play back ups. 27 years and still no solution :(
so what if you have a Xstation installed on a PAL PS1 and want to run that way NTSC correctly in 59.82hz instead of 59.28hz would this tool also work?
I don't have an Xstation and I'm PAL so I'm not even sure how this would work, sorry. If you have Xstation to begin with, then I don't see the need to use FreePSXBoot unless I am missing something important
Would it run on a multi bank mem card? Bank 1 for FreePSXBoot and bank 2-8 for saves? or would it just jam up?
It's a good question, but I don't know as I don't have a memory card that has multi bank.
I try and don't work with my 8mb mc, after instalation same like in movie my mc 8mb still working normal I change banks but always same story instalation was successful but memory card working like before.

For burn bin psx .what best speed for burning.
I TEST BURN IMAGE BIN WHITH SPEED AWS.AND CD NO WORK ON CONSOL PS1.BUT WORK PERFECT ON PS2.

Everything works fine until I press play after boot cd.
The last messages say
"waiting for CD to become ready & unlocked.."
"Disc State: Seeking 2..."
and then nothing happens, just stays there. Anyone know what it could be?
Can you try a different game disc? Or how about use tonyhax?

TonyHax was a flop. Might be because the PS1 I have is old and from the FFVII era and is also capable of playing VCDs (has the direct RCA outputs on the back), but none of the discs I tried loaded except for one and it locked up after a few seconds. Maybe it's the quality of the discs, maybe I suck at burning them, I don't know.
What I do know? I got to listen to THPS2 menu music whilst I tried loading each game. #Nostalgia

So, this requires a completely freed up memory card. Huh. Well, be worth a try I suppose. After I get tired of running games via OPL. Yeah; it's a new thing for me. Hmmm...but to answer the question you asked with a #RandomFave, that would be Gran Turismo 2; the Plus mod is really cool.
Could be laser or model version issue. Tonyhax and freepsxboot works great on my 9k model ps1 here. Do what works best for you.

You need to write the prebuilt image to your PS1 card, it's not a save file at all.

I feel pretty damn nice now, looking at my modded ps2 that i used to mod my Ps1 memcard now, of which i got 2 brand new ones just a week before this exploit happened, great timing, great time to be alive as a nostalgia junkie

Hello. Please help me. Iam really desperate. Iam doing everything right. But when Iam in the anihilator I choose the Image restore and iam navigating to the unirom. The Anihilator cant see it in the directories. Iam sure its correct version etc. Just the file is not visible when Iam navigating to the image. HELP

Using this method can you have freepsxboot and game saves on one memory card?
I believe freepsxboot dedicates the whole memory card to the mod, so cannot put save files on it. This is why I like tonyhax because you don't have that restriction
What does the "install unirom" option? Is like the FMCB on PS2?
To install unirom you need to have cheat device plugged into parallel port of console.
So… can i install from fortuna? You mentioned can’t install from freemcboot.

Not sure what you mean here, sorry. Best to ask on a ps2 modding forum if you are extracting a certain file from a ps2 game for PC use.
How good is the compatibility with games?
It's getting better and better all the time, v1.3.3 was just released yesterday as an example. The community is great and helping it become better.

I know it's out of topic but I need to ask about smth. I'm planning to soft mod my PS2Slim and use the FreeDVDBoot ESR Patch method.... BUT I also want to use external USB storage (a large Pendrive will be enough I suppose) as storage for PSX Games. But here's my question: what OTHER possibilities that external storage can give to my PS2 console?
Other than holding ps1 or ps2 games, you could put roms on there and use emulators to play those roms like genesis or nes. Some people may put old school video files and use SMS player to play said files, but these days I'd rather use like plex or kodi to do that as PS2 is not that great for this multimedia player service.
Maybe I am the only one facing this issue but the MCA v2 is giving me a black screen.
There are methods discussed on the github to address this.
I might have uncovered an issue which may affect some users. I have a SCPH1001 with a laser swapped from a 101 and the exploit just freezes on the memory card screen each time. This may not work correctly on Frankenstein systems.
I bricked 2 mem cards with my 1001, but I think mine is stock. I think there are issues with the 1001.
@@CustomGames-wg9gv don’t throw your cards away though, I found a way to unbrick them. Luckily I have another newer untouched PS1 that took the mod and I was then able to boot into unirom and reformat the bad cards there. They work fine now. I had created my cards using MCA with a modded PS2 and after the brick the PS2 would halt every time they were plugged in (which was documented by the creator). So either there are issues with the older models or my bios is looking for a different model Laser module than what I have and it is bricking the cards.

it works perfectly except on games that has copy protection like legend of dragoon, metal gear solid works even with disk changing and so does a lot of games that has more than one disk thanks for this yeah I know this is old but thanks anyway lol

I was able to install the software on a 3rd party memory card but i haven't tested it yet because i don't have my PS1s withme they are at a storage unit over 10 systems and we can actually get 3rd party memory cards for cheap
Also Libretro made more emulators for the PS2
I even got codebreakers 3.3, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 9.2, 9.3, 10.0 and 10.1 to work on free mcboot through there ELF files i even got a few pre codebreakers that were released before codebreaker 3.3 and i managed to get them to work from there ELFs too

Your memory card is 1MB, so it cannot hold any ps1 game at all or ps2 for that matter.

I don't see why not, it will take long time for optic laser to burn out and plus replacing is cheap..or get a ps2 and play from usb/hard drive

How fake does it need to be? I have used popular third party brands like Nyko, InterAct, and Performance, no issues. Mad Catz work fine too. Thats my only experience though.

You might need to do swap trick method on freepsxboot. However, not all Japanese PSX model works well with swap trick.
