I LOVE IT. I was born in the forties but l love bright colors, strong delineation, themes, David Bowie, and any other strong influences that have come and gone, and will return. I want my journey to reflect that. I so appreciate this video. Life is art. When l go out l don't want to blend into the crowd. The Memphis style stands out. When l think Memphis, I think Elvis. That's good too.
Ooo I absolutely loved this style. It's like classy meets playful...but like the genius of a 5 yr old type of playful! This definitely stands in contrast to other design styles I like, which tend to be a bit darker.
The *current* version of this trend with the slightly desaturated peach yellows, blush pinks, teals, and duck blues - with the occasional pop of white - is kind of my dream industrial/office studio aesthetic. 😂 I know how crazy that sounds, but I love the clean-yet-round lines, the play with proportions, and the explosion of (internally) monochromatic items in (contextually) distinct colors. It feels exactly right. I don't feel pressure to perform any roles (like "the professional"), in a space like that, and it's both relaxing (because of the clean round lines) and energizing (because of the playful proportions and profusion of different colors). I can just be me and get down to work.
Wow it's nice to hear sm1 knows their style.. what's good for them.. İ feel for me it will be too overwhelming.. maybe in an office but not for a bedroom nor a living room..
Another super helpful one! I remember seeing this a lot in coffeeshops/commercial spaces in the 90s and thinking it was so dated -- just made the connection now to the more artistic early version of it
Memphis abstract design is one of the most famous, world renowned styles of the last 50yrs, so I don't really agree with your opening statements, maybe you just missed it or too young? But enjoyed the video.
The style is iconic, but the name isn't as known. I have a diploma in Interior Design, recognized the style...never heard the name to be honest. So really it depends who you ask. 😉 Glad you enjoyed it either way.
I agree with you. I don't have a degree in design but as a design aficionado I am very familiar with Memphis style. The average person may not know what its called but in design circles its well known
What about the movie Beetlejuice? Or, Edward scissor hands? And basically anything Tim Burton directed. Or, the house of the snobby neighbors who live next door to the Griswolds in the Griswold family Christmas movie? All great examples of 80’s maximalism.
I've found you and been bingeing your videos. Im really enjoying them- thank you! One piece of feedback on this one. Memphis design is not really lesser known among design aficionados. The design blogs have been predicting its return for at least the last 6+ years. Color is a part of the style but also shape and contrast. Curved furniture and funky vases you see a lot of today are memphis-inspired (and Memphis was Art Deco inspired). Take a look at Rhianna's Rude Boy video from 2014ish. She helped to usher the return of this aesthetic in its exaggerated form. But generally Memphis is what was considered artful contemporary in the late 80s/early 90s. You make a few statements that reflect your lack of familiarity- suggesting you don't see it in real homes. Disagree... particularly in larger cities/artsy/"cool kids" circles. Its also bigger in Europe- which tends to be more fashion-forward. I think you may be thinking this bc you are thinking about its most extreme form (Saved by the Bell).. But toned down Memphis is absolutely is being adopted into maximalist interiors. CB2 has a lot of Memphis references- albeit neutral ones. On IG @GLADYSTAY has a beautiful memphis-inspired account albeit less bright. All of the European decor magazines have Memphis items and themes. Just like you do with all of the other styles- don't go by the most obvious, dated version of the style. Look at the themes & elements that ARE being pulled forward- just like you do for Victorian, Mid Century and all of the other styles you mention. Btw, Im not personally the biggest Memphis design person but it has absolutely been making a big impact again in the design world over the last 5-7 years.
The "Rude Boy" music video is very Caribbean & African savanah, but with nods to '80s visual artists. I think there are similarities to Memphis but that wasn't the goal.
I think it translated to architecture more. My previous home had a stair step decider wall and was built in 1989. So I think it filtered down in small ways.
Being a Maximalist, I don't care for the Memphis style. It's the color combinations I don't like... too high contrast for me. It seems childlike and unsophisticated, if I may judge. It was also a prominent influence in many 80's MTV videos and MTV branding, too. I never though about Saved by the Bell, but you're right! How about Pee-Wee's Playhouse?
Pee wees playhouse probably as well. I would have to google to see it as I can't fully recall. I feel like we saw a lot of it in TV shows of that time..more so then real life
God, I lived through the 80's but I'm so glad I never had to live in a place that looked like a cartoon or a kindergarten play room. Yikes! I love the 80's (my favorite decade for clothes and haircuts), but Memphis Interior Design Style was a nightmare. I think it may have heralded the end of civilization itself.
@@gizmonovack Hi Bung! I'm so old, I guess, that I don't even know what a funko pop collection is! And regarding video games, they were never my cup of tea. Pee-Wee’s Playhouse is always the first thing I think of from my childhood when I think of Memphis style!

I love the last room on the video. Really stylish take on the Memphis look.
Yes, I feel like we could modernize this look and it would be really neat... Might be an idea for a future video :)

All good examples as well!
Now this is where Vaporwave style came from...
Partially, but since vaporwave is a music genre first and foremost, it has more to do with commercial music of the time period. Muzak and such.
I was a teen in the 80's so you would think I would like this style haha :) very well said though, I love your teachable content!
It's an acquired taste 😅
Thank you!
Thank you this was good

i like those dandelions in the background. Did you make them with cotton wool?
Just bought at homesense :)

Actually, the terrazzo pattern that was big a few years ago is a byproduct of the Memphis, 80s style.
Looks like a preschool toy box exploded in a space. Pee wee Herman smokes wacky tobacky and designs things.
Yup... its a WILD one! Pee Wee herman is one of the images I found too LOL
I love Kartell Memphis is nice to look at but to use it wouldn’t be ideal 😂 Kartell can be used
I like it a lot.. i think it will be very kool for a play ground area.. not for a house tho
this one is not my favorite, but the new updated version ( post modern video) is really a nice take on it :)
Some like call to call Memphis "A shotgun wedding between Bauhaus and Fisher-Price"... but... I just like calling it FUN!

It is something else that's for sure!
I think it’s about balance
@@gizmonovack Ultimately, everything seems to be about balance, huh? Living in a 1980's pre-school, though, is not my idea of "balanced." 😀

I like postmodern, I like memphis, but it can be overpowering. A little goes a long way
Agreed!
it looks like a toy box
Sottsass was italo-austrian. You pronounce Ettore like it's an italian word and Sottsass like it's a Bavarian/High-German word.

Uncomfortable chairs. LOL
Not for us, Girl, right? Too much frou-frou in a bad way...
It is definetly a wild style, a little to much for my tastes... but it was super fun to research :)
It's a very uninteresting style.
