      I'm guessing the short takeaway is "time trades with your start up animations and use poise resetting weapon arts in between taking hits if you're using a heavy weapon that relies on trades, e.g. Pickaxe, and note that rolling through an attack applies poise damage just like any other status buildup".

      "Poise" is so unreliable in single player DS3 I just assume it doesn't exist. It only exists for some weapons, it is only in in effect at some times, etc. It's just more trouble than it is worth. To make DS3 PvP better they made DS3 PvE much worse.

    Good stuff Amir. Hopefully the rest of us can follow the information here.
    In case it's a bit hard for people to understand that basics of poise and hyperarmor:
    Hyperarmor are the frames where you can be hit and not be staggered. Think 2h greatsword R1 or part of the "roll poise" portion of your roll.
    Poise is the in game stat you have that adds to your poise health. 2h greatsword R1's have some poise health plus the armor you have. If you run out of poise health, you will be staggered as if there were no hyperarmor frames.

    • @Amir0
      @Amir0  3 года назад +18

      Poise stat helps reduce incoming damage to your poise health, it doesn’t add a flat amount. However if it worked that way it wouldn’t be too different.

    Hey I enjoyed this video a lot and you are obviously very knowledgeable on these subjects but I have a couple pieces of (maybe unsolicited but well meaning) constructive criticism. I only say all this because you are clearly very passionate about both Dark Souls and making the really complicated aspects of DS more easily accessible. I also really love this game and would love for this more complicated stuff to be understood by more people. And if the comments are anything to go by, a lot of people still don't have a great understanding of these mechanics.
    For a topic as dense as this I think it's pretty important that the visuals help understanding. I think that there's a couple of ways to improve this. First, when explaining footage, with something really complicated I think it's good to explain what is going to happen, *then* show it. In the last clip (9:15) you don't finish explaining what the clip is until after the clip starts, so if what you are saying is important to the understanding of the footage (which in a lot of these cases it is) I need to hear all of what you are saying, then rewind a couple seconds to be able to watch what is going on.
    Another example: At 8:05 you are talking about a scenario with two weapons, Instead of showing a chart of the data I think it would be super helpful to show the scenario you are describing. I don't mean footage of the interaction, I just mean something as simple as showing pictures of each weapon you are describing on screen when you name them. This makes it much easier to both hear and understand what it is you are saying.
    The last point is basically moderation. This comes in two forms. First, this video is extremely dense. This probably should have been something like a 20-30 minute video to allow some separation between footage that is complicated and narration that is complicated. Second, there's a lot of background footage that isn't tied to what you are saying. This is a bit more speculative on my part but I think it actually detracts a bit. There are a lot of sections of the video where I would honestly have gotten a better grasp of the information if I had not watched what was on screen (if I looked away and just listened or something). Footage should ideally make it easier to understand what's going on rather than be a distraction. I think using still images of objects that you are talking about helps convey the information better than charts and random footage (not totally random, but unexplained footage).
    Again I only say all this because this video is fantastic, but I think there are a couple of ways you could improve that you wouldn't easily be able to identify since you obviously already know the material when you watch your own video. Keep up the great work.
    Lastly, I think a fantastic video idea would be one explain more so the application of these mechanics. How 'meta-ish' equipment build form and why. Certain breakpoints of poise on armor and what matchups they change. Or, what builds it might not be worth looking at. Just to try and start to bridge the gap between abstract mechanics and actual gameplay.

    • @Lunadherent
      @Lunadherent 3 года назад +3

      @@Amir0 No it doesn't. Besides, even the scream follow up doesn't outdamage the L2+L2 combo that much. So it's just a beast of a weapon with zero dependency to FP. Only downside is that it needs Black Blade for optimal damage. It's not bad without buff either but I'd rather have the weapon have more base AR and not be buffable. It'd be a much better weapon for invasions.

      This is supported by how easy it is to 'switch it on'. According to a modder, all you need to do is mess around a bit in the code and boom 100% working poise. Which is also why a ton of mods come with poise activated.
      I certainly felt like DS1 poise was too much but DS2 pulled it back too much but it was still usable and fun. DS3 pulled the plug on poise almost entirely and I'm not sure if it's the right decision, but it is one they took.

    • @uggachugga760
      @uggachugga760 3 года назад +3

      @@alephkasai9384 Yeah there's literally just a bool that you set to true to turn poise on. I tried it for a playthrough and I admit, it does make the game easy. Dark Souls 2's poise was the most balanced, it's a shame the PvE wasn't lol. They really should have kept it for Dark Souls 3, but I think they were worried about people poising through attacks for backstabs, and the backlash Dark Souls 2 got made them reluctant to lean in that direction.

    It would be nice to actually do a demonstration of the math step by step of an attack. Show the relationships of the poise number, hyper armor number, damage, poise damage, poise health as numbers on the screen. It's really hard to understand math while showing gameplay of two guys smashing their swords together.

    So, from what I understand, this scenario would work.
    One guy is Blue, another purple. Same poise stat, using claymore. Purple will trade and stagger and poise through the attack, but then loses the trade advantage afterwards and needs to reset it.
    Now another situation. Blue wants to reset poise to trade with purple. Blue uses caestus, if purple throws a throwing knife at blue while in the WA cast, does he immediately lose poise health and go back to blue? Cause if so, I have a new strategy and this will make my play so much better.

    Ok so:
    1) weapon arts reset your character’s hyperarmor/poise-bar
    2) perseverance is a weapon art, but even DURING this special type of hyperarmor the normal hyperarmor can be decreased with enemy hit i.e. poise damage
    3) Latency hits, and say “proximity hits” that do not cause stagger or health damage STILL in fact cause poise damage

    RPG that has hyper armor that doesnt even make sense. People complained about Havel monsters, yet giving hyper armor to Great weapons, when weapons like Dragonslayer axe or dual wields for some reason dont have it.
    So let me get this straight. If you wear shit ton of armor and use small sword, you get 0 hyper armor and can be staggered by TROWING DAGGER but if you are butt naked and use Great club you get tiny bit of Hyper armor.
    GG fromsoft, instead of fixing pyromancy or Blue spirits invasion search they implement this into game.

    So if I'm understanding this right, if you can poise through an attack at 80% poise, there's no reason to purposely reset your poise health to 100% since attacks will already fill your poise health enough. However, if you can poise through something at 100% poise health but not at 80%, then it would be beneficial to reset poise health via WA. Is this correct?
