Take Your House Back is hosted with three of us, myself, Dana from A Slob Comes Clean and Cas from Clutterbug. We talk big picture about how to declutter and focus a lot of attention on working through obstacles like sentimental items, unsupportive family members and other hang-ups. This course is FUN, there is a lot of involvement from all three of us and the ideas are specific to those who haven't been successful in the past.
Ideal for those who have been decluttering for a long time with little success and those looking for more community and support.
In the Declutter Your Home in 15 Minutes a Day course we go through the workbook, breaking down specific areas of your home in detail to be able to declutter faster and with more confidence. If you want to know specifics (like how many of each thing to keep) this course is for you.

I get such a kick from Tom saying he likes everything in its place, he hates messes, etc…and who leaves his clutter in plain sight all the time?! Tom does!🤣 ❤️Dawn maybe you need to empty a cabinet in the kitchen just for Tom’s tool dump. That way he knows where his stuff is and it’s out of sight.

Admittedly i struggle with clutter (recently found Dawn and Cas and am working on it) but he's got zero room to talk 😂 he loves to tell me I have so much to declutter while standing next to a folding table we can't break down because it's stacked 2-3 feet tall of his miscellaneous stuff.

I loved seeing the Real Life house. It's actually very encouraging to see some clutter type things on your surfaces. It makes it an easier goal for me that it's NOT having clean surfaces all the time, but how quickly you can bring it to clean surfaces. Whew. That's a relief.

As one "family style" minimalist to another - yes, you DO live minimally compared to most people. You have some family activities out, kitchen things, etc, which is totally normal. My main way to tell the difference? We can tidy up clutter in 15 minutes if someone is coming over, like you can. Thanks for this video!

  • @melissazabower339
    @melissazabower339 2 года назад +9

I'm more or less minimalist (except crafting 😉) because I have mobility issues from an autoimmune disease. I had a discussion with my cleaning lady years ago -- she wanted to get rid of some knickknacks and art work. I said no. She pointed out that she's the one that has to dust. I pointed out that most of my existence is in the recliner and I need pretty things to look at. We never discussed it again.
That said, if the Pioneer Woman serving tray brings you joy, get Tom to put some sort of mount on the wall. You'll see it every day and take it down to use it -- like old farm kitchens of yesteryear. And the teal matches your cabinets!

  • @judyellen4412

That was the best part of your video. I laughed so much and showed this part to my husband.
We have had the same the same “discussions” about tools in our home.
And, Tom, just for the record, most people’s kitchens have way more stuff than your’s does.

Your house truly looks so good, and cheerful in its “day in, day out” state. One reason why IS because you have intentionally decluttered / purged and “made room for what matters most”. I like the drill on the ledge, building materials in the corner, broom in the corner, games on the coffee table - & then the desks. Hair products on the vanity, cooking aftermath in the kitchen, your workbook in a corner... . Showing everyone’s interests and skills. Yay!
Your home is full of life. And bonus: seeing dogs and Tom outside ! So candid. Neat !

Yours and Tom's banter on the outro is so sweet!. I think that you do live a regular, day-to-day life. I would say, simplified, rather than minimalist. I'm in the midst of moving back into town, and decluttering my semi-rural place, so that my 19 y/o daughter can live here as independently as possible. So, I've been binge-watching your content-and then sharing 'gems' with my daughter, and we are both learning together, as we go along. Sometimes I feel like we still have way too much stuff in our house, but we’ve been house hunting for the past several months and the amount of stuff in some of the homes we’ve viewed is staggering. So often I’ve thought how glad I am we don’t have to pack up these enormous, overcrowded basements! So I don’t know that we’re actual minimalists, but I think we do have less than average. And it’s still a work in progress paring it down even more :)

I think especially when you just accept that some things stay a bit untidy at times, it helps me to feel better about giving others the space to tidy when the time is right rather than, "it must always be perfect!" I believe kids also especially appreciate that as they develop their own habits and become more independent 😊

We live much simpler than many but it doesn't necessarily always feel different because we still have a threshold where we feel overwhelmed and know it's time to reset. I was encouraged though, when a gal came for Bible Study and said she was so inspired she went home and got rid of like 200lbs of stuff. I didn't say a word about how I aim to be minimal, she was just so inspired by how it felt! Super exciting to help others just through our home being comfortable and manageable!

Your family has learned how to selectively manage wants and needs in a practical manner. You are not deprived when your needs are met and your "I wants" are indulged within practical limitations such as the square footage available, how much inventory you and yours want to manage, how much time you all want to spend dusting etc. Great example to us all.

I consider myself a “family minimalist”… as in.. I have 3 kids, they have things, they love to create and make stuff, etc.. we still cook and have dirty laundry and dishes at times, but as you say, we can have it all picked up in about 30 minutes!! I have always felt confused as to how I have decluttered so much and consider myself a minimalist, especially compared to everyone else I know, but still can’t reach the “RUclips” status in my home! Your home has much less inventory than most homes. Although your flat surfaces collect items, before and after they are cleared of items which keeps the inventory to a minimum. Many people have decorative items on every surface and then add more items. As well, most people store items on flat surfaces, especially the floor. I keep reducing my inventory and am happier and happier with the completion of every de-cluttering exercise. Your house is very inspiring. Thank you for sharing.

Without a doubt, low inventory means quicker cleanups! My main rooms have been edited and edited until I have only what is necessary. My 'hidden treasures' as you so kindly put it, usually live behind closed doors when company comes over. And I realize if I am closing doors, I need to edit in that room as well. As one who has less energy now, I don't want to spend it just moving clutter around, but get rid of it once and never have to deal with it again. That way I regain control, I regain time and peace of mind.
And like you, my impulse buys are few and far between, and needs a mention when it finally does happen. Usually I find myself admiring something off-shopping-list for a minute in the store, and then walking past it. I never go back and pick it up, and I never miss it. That's my 'minimalist shopping.' Thanks for the honest and frank house walk-thru today.

Tell Tom that most people literally have closets, garages, attics, and basements, and some even rooms crammed with stuff they don’t use, whole rooms they can’t use and they don’t even use all the stuff in them. I know because I used to have one myself. So silly but I’m using that room and enjoying it now!!! Y’all are doing so well. I’m getting there!

Yep, we have gotten rid of so much stuff, and I feel a bit like we forget how much we used to have, because in my case anyhow, I actually don't think about the stuff that is gone. I do however know my house is much more peaceful and easier to clean up. Still working on it, but minimalism is sometimes portrayed as having nothing. You are right, we have stuff that we use and want to have around. You can still have nice things! Just not an overwhelming amount of things.

Tom needs to watch some “hoarders” shows. That is closer to the “normal” way people in the USA and Canada live than your simpler lifestyle. Simple doesn’t mean deprived. Content with “enough”. That’s plenty. If you never have time to be bored you have more than enough stuff.

I think you definitely live minimally, but the reason it doesn't feel like it is partly the same reason we forget how much progress we've made: our brains constantly adjust to our new environment! Additionally, we all know that in houses filled to the brim, only a fraction of items are used; by simplifying your belongings *only* to what you actually do use, you haven't really changed your routines around what's used, you have simply removed ALL of the stuff that used to sit by the wayside causing stress!
I've recently let things slide a little in my decluttering journey, but I recognize that we are SO much better off right now than before I started minimizing 2-3 years ago! It is a wonderful feeling ☺

Thanks for the encouragement!

Because I’ve been watching your channel for a long time I can say Yes, I think you have worked hard at becoming a minimalist. I think you’ve incorporated good rules for your children and you and Tom work well at compromise. You both motivate me to ask myself the tough questions of what and why I want to keep or let go of things. I still have a long way to go but I’m getting there and it’s not as overwhelming as in the beginning.
    So thanks! 😊

Zinnia seeds from the Dollar Tree were AMAZING! One year I bought a LOT of Zinnia seed packets. Why? I don’t know, I didn’t even know what a zinnia was. I also knew they were dollar tree seeds. Who knows how old they were. I’d be lucky if I got a few, but for $1 a pack. Can’t lose. Being the non- gardener that I am, I sprinkled the packets on all exposed dirt throughout my yard. Darned if they did t all (or most) sprout. I even had to move a whole bed of them from one location to another and they ALL survived! Dead head them and you have flowers coming out your ears! LOVE THEM!

I discovered your channel about three weeks ago and have been watching your videos daily. I have succeeded to throw away and donate bags and boxes full of clothes, kitchen items, toys, craft supplies and random stuff we don’t need and use. Along with extra furnitures that we have been keeping in the attic, just collecting dust. I have developed decluttering muscle and it is getting easier to part with stuff. I still have a lot of work to do but our house is so much easier to manage. It is peaceful to sit on the couch looking at empty spaces in stead of junks everywhere. I can finally see the floor in my attic.I am so grateful that I found your channel. Thank you for doing what you are doing. I could never have done it without you. Lots of love ❤️❤️❤️🌷🌷🌷

Favorite. Video. Ever! So real, and such an example of how fast/easy it is to tidy up without all the stuff around. You have inspired me the last year and a half, and I have shed so much EXCESS, I can’t believe it! Everyone always loved my house, and never really saw all my excess, but I have pictures to prove it. Lol. I would always tell my husband… My goodness I’m giving away such good stuff! But the truth is ….the stuff was not good for me just sitting in closets or in drawers or cabinets or baskets. A constant “silent to do list” nagging me when I saw all of this. Yeah, my house now can get untidy at times, but it is a breeze to just get everything put in its “home” spot once again very quickly. I thank you and your sweet family for inspiring so many people! My advice to others is just watch minimalism videos over and over again, and just keep the process going. It is life-changing. Take care!

What a difference the study nook makes! Having it to keep that "messy area" it "pushed back" from the rest of the house is perfect, rather than a study/activity corner or space that encroaches into the living areas.

I'm have tears in my eyes because I've continued to declutter my home. After 7.5 years of feeling too stressed, depressed, unmotivated, and defeated my hubby and I are painting the interior doors!!! They've never been painted so cleaning them has been difficult. I now have the "bandwidth" to successfully tackle numerous home projects. The stumps in the yard have been ground down so I can redesign the front flower bed. My hubby put up a new light in the kitchen after 2+ years of procrastination. I can do this partially because of ongoing encouragement to declutter. Thank you so much for showing me that any progress is moving forward. Love and hugs from a sister in Christ from your beloved Texas state...

You do live so much differently than most. I'm still working towards it. We just turned our old house into a "minimalist" Airbnb and it feels so amazing how tidy and how much space it has, even though it's less than half the size of our new house (we've not hardly moved in yet, so it'll get better). BUT our 3yo keeps asking to move back to our old house, and she finally verbalized why: she likes how tidy it is there! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I gotta get my act together. Your real life house tour is lovely, and a great goal for me.
