"We are being crucified by a process that is threatening to turn blacks into a permanent underclass here Frank, a permanent underclass!" I would almost consider that a prophetic statement that was made close to 30 years ago regarding this movie. Look at what is going on now. The good thing regarding this is that many blacks are now starting to wake up to this. It's much easier to just give up, roll over, and not do anything than it is to actually stand up and do something for yourself.
It wasn't prophetic. It was reflective of the time, but also, this is an ongoing issue that stems from the times of slavery. Of course, since that time, there has been the cycle of some black folks moving up, only to be smacked back down by systemic racism in some form. Black people have always been aware of this. It isn't so much that it sneaks up on somebody to then have them fall into despair. Generational despair already exists when you see no changes taking place directly around you, not just because of your family, but because of your environment, the poor schools, the racist cops, the low availability of jobs in one's area.
@@Keithjustkeithwastaken While Italians and Irish did deal with certain prejudices, they paled in comparison to what blacks, Asians, and Hispanics have had to deal with. People of color were brought here as property, most Irish and Italians came here for asylum (don't believe that "Irish slave" myth white supremacists love to perpetuate). Also, Irish and Italian folks had the opportunity to disappear into the American monoculture by changing their names and assimilating, essentially becoming "white". Food for thought.

One of the greatest movie scenes of all time..very well acted out and strongly felt by many..bravo gentlemen
Agree
Robert Guillame was great in this role as was Morgan Freeman. Freeman should have won been nominated and WON for Best Actor but Robert Guillame should have been nominated and won for Best Supporting Actor for this movie. End of Discussion !!!
Adding more to the list actors who got snubbed for Oscars 😔
David Duryea Look, Morgan was nominated this year for Best Actor for Driving Miss Daisy. You can't nominate his ass in the same category twice.
sha11235 well more to the point Guillame should have been nominated for best supporting actor and won too.
+Davey74Boy Damn right he should have!
+sha11235 He played this better then driving Mrs daisy .
"THATS WHAT YOU SAID MAN,THATS WHAT YOU SAID", this scene is so powerful for black men to be shown able to disagree vehemently without the need for violence........these two should have done way more movies together
A full 2 minute one shot scene. Only true professionals can accomplish this. And only Morgan Freeman can make it look good.
With a little help from a friend.
A man with 100% stage talent & experience.
R.I.P. Guillaume.
My hat is off to you sir.
"So he dumped that that desk right on top your head, well right on! good for him."

Best scene in the whole movie. Finest actors I’ve ever seen. RIP Robert Guillaume. You were the real deal.
moofress he had point, what good is Mozart going to do a bunch of children who can’t go out and get a job
@@damisicarter9185 & I think that Mr. Napier did understand that, but was basically between a rock & a hard place.
1 of my favorite scenes of all time. Napier(Guilliame) is reminding Joe Clark(Freeman) 2 get it together
I don't know, when he told old boy to jump off the building was a good scene too lol
I love it when Dr Napier yelled,"END OF DISCUSSION! Debate is over, YOU will write a formal apology!"
"I will WHAT?!?!?"
"A FORMAL APOLOGY"!
“For your treatment of Mrs. Elliot and Darnell, and for your vicious and THOUGHTLESS insult to the women of this community! You will cowtow, you will step & fetch.”

Cowtow or kowtow sounded like a Chinese dish

That's the way it should be! There wasn't no wrong answers here.. both sides had a point..
at 1:10 - Dr. Napier - "Nigga can you keep quiet!" My favorite line...
I swear I've used that line 1,000 times in life because he made that shit sound so fuckin cold.
The "step n' fetchit" ls the funniest line. Thats a saying from that generation you don't hear much today.
"WHAT THE HELL YOU THINK I'M WORRIED ABOUT?!?" one of the best line deliveries in any movie ever.
Straight up though 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think they ad libed in this scene

Both were right, but they held each other accountable. THAT IS REAL FRIENDSHIP!!! Friendship is give and take, raise them up and point out the faults, and just being there for each other.
Mr. Clark was a beast in this movie, but Dr. Napier, easily takes him down in this scene. Tells you how much of a beast Napier really was.
Ahhh, shaddap. We all saw what happened, and the word "beast" doesn't apply to everything.
That was beast mode before it was cool
John Curiel Joe got that inspirational pep talk we all get from time to time in life LOL
McArthur Clutch that's y its a great scene
Joe clark suit is still smoking from the fire Benson put on him

This is one of the most explosive movie scenes ever. Two top flight actors going toe to toe (with the help of John Avildsen's understated direction). How the hell wasn't Robert Guilliame a bigger film star?

Such great acting! Benson wasn't messing around! Oscar worthy performances by both men.
That's a master class in acting. I would like to know how many takes that took, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was one-and-done. Two virtuoso's doing what they do.
I'll bet when they hit it right ,and walked out the door, the crew on set applauded this.

@Taran(open): 50th like.
Two masters of their craft at work here.
"We are being crucified by a process that is threatening to turn blacks into a permanent underclass here Frank, a permanent underclass!"
I would almost consider that a prophetic statement that was made close to 30 years ago regarding this movie. Look at what is going on now.
The good thing regarding this is that many blacks are now starting to wake up to this. It's much easier to just give up, roll over, and not do anything than it is to actually stand up and do something for yourself.
To me many are just giving up living on welfare
It wasn't prophetic. It was reflective of the time, but also, this is an ongoing issue that stems from the times of slavery. Of course, since that time, there has been the cycle of some black folks moving up, only to be smacked back down by systemic racism in some form.
Black people have always been aware of this. It isn't so much that it sneaks up on somebody to then have them fall into despair. Generational despair already exists when you see no changes taking place directly around you, not just because of your family, but because of your environment, the poor schools, the racist cops, the low availability of jobs in one's area.
@@Iloveswedes oh sweet so when the Italians and Irish dealt with that and over came it it was luck nothing to do with the people?
@@Keithjustkeithwastaken While Italians and Irish did deal with certain prejudices, they paled in comparison to what blacks, Asians, and Hispanics have had to deal with. People of color were brought here as property, most Irish and Italians came here for asylum (don't believe that "Irish slave" myth white supremacists love to perpetuate).
Also, Irish and Italian folks had the opportunity to disappear into the American monoculture by changing their names and assimilating, essentially becoming "white".
Food for thought.
Sorry 3yrs late here and yes that very statement is the message of this scene, well acted yes but fell on deaf ears but alot of folk starting to wake up
