When they were looking for a song to use in Jersey Boys showing how the group's "sound" was first created, one of the staff dug through Gaudio's songs and proposed it be used in the famous scene.

He probably wanted to listen to the originals after he watched the movie and concluded he liked the faster/poppier sound the movie had. And thats just his preference. It's three girls, if my ears have it right-Peggy Santaglia, Denise Ferri, and Bernadette Carroll. The three of them backed up quite a few artists in the mid '60s, most notably Lou Christie. They even released a couple singles together as Jessica James and the Outlaws.
Think the train wreck way that they start the song takes something away from the vocals - and the backing singers sound a little dated in 2016. But overall a great song. I thought most of the soundtrack (from the Jersey Boys movie) wasn't as strong as the play but I thought Cry For Me was one of the highlights.

I totally agree. I think the intro and ending to this song is what kept it from being a hit. The movie version is so much better because the singer's voice in the movie was more suited for the song.
