Oh I love your wrap ups. If you only have time for one vlog per month my vote is for a wrap up because we get a sense of your month ( which writers you've talked to what you've been reading for your many projects, but mostly what you've enjoyed reading as a lover of literature) Great stuff before the 👻 in the machine...spooky
Hi Simon ! I am so impressed by the amount of work you can do in a month! I really enjoy your videos because I always discover new things (cities, books etc..). Thanks!
Oooh wrap-ups are my favourite! So happy you're doing them again :) Really need to get a move on with The Wolf Den, but I'm currently reading A Thousand Ships and feel like I can't read those two at the same time for some reason, haha. The live show is an extra motivator though! Hope you have a great day :)
I saved Rizzio for its anniversary, March 9, which was yesterday. Terrific! Thanks for showing me this novella because I'd never have discovered it otherwise. And now Holyrood Palace is on my bucket list. 🙂
Loved where the Crawdads Sing for the spectacular nature descriptions but found the safeguarding issues and the fact she learnt to read then could read scientific books issues unbelievable. Reading Real Life at the moment and am not enjoying as much as the recommendations. Loved Leave the World Behind but a while ago. Thanks for the heads up about Sea State- I knew a lot of people who worked on oil rigs off the coast in W.A. in the 1980's and 1990's and the lifestyle that really unsettled and affected family life.
You’d probably get a lot out of Sea State. Well depends actually. I’d be interested to see actually. I think sometimes we have to suspend our disbelief in fiction. That said the best books make you believe anything.
Hi Simon, I really enjoy your videos, and your passion as well as the intelligent way you collect and recollect your thoughts on each book. Thank you for the amount of content you do for your channel. I think you're a great voice in the booktube community 😀
At the moment I have been binging Christmas books 🎄. I am in the mood to read some feel good fun books centered around the holidays. I’m reading a good Christmas book that I’m enjoying.
Sea State is out in the US in January I think and I am quite keen to read it. I honestly thought Where the Crawdads Sing was just ok, but if others loved it that‘s great because reading is reading. Love your jumper by the way, and your edits crack me up!
Thank you. It was a new-not-new purchase.and I think it’s great we all have different tastes and responses to books. I enjoyed it, it won’t be in my books of the year but I enjoyed it.
I loved Leave the World Behind... that tension building was amazing! I was slightly scared off by the low rating on goodreads but I don't need a book to be wrapped up all nearly with a pretty happy bow (which was mainly the criticism) so thought I'd chance it from a charity shop and I'm so glad I did! 🦌
It’s a corker isn’t it. This may make you laugh at the irony… but I don’t really read reviews of books or films. And if I hear a bad review of something I want to read/watch even (if I’m feeling particularly rogue) somewhere I want to say I just tend to do it because I know me and my tastes better than anyone else. Ha. And if I live to regret it, oh well. Least I did what I wanted.
@@SavidgeReads I agree wholeheartedly with all of this 😂 I read reviews only if I'm on the fence to see what they're complaining about... in cases like this, the negative reviews made me want to read it more because they were complaining about things I usually love 😂😂 I'm all on board with doing something because you're told not to 😉
Just the title Come Join Our Disease sounds absolutely fascinating. I'm pretty squeamish so not sure if I could handle it, but major kudos to the author for that title!
@@SavidgeReads The one showing where David Rizzio was murdered, it had it all, walkabout, pizza, Chris on the train and Louise going to Scotland, even had a bin flash.
I really enjoyed Crawdads but I hardly ever recommend it to others, not quite sure why. Leave the World Behind, I found very compelling but the characters frustrated me no end. Maybe living in the Bush Capital in Australia makes me feel more attuned to the natural world, not to mention, we've faced more than our fair share of apocalyptic bushfires, droughts, hail & lightening storms. I always seem to be on the watch for what nature might throw at us next. Rizzio by Denise Mina has definitely been placed on my TBR, I'm so sold on it, thanks for reviewing it.
Maybe you don’t need to recommend Crawdads because almost everyone seems to have read it. I didn’t mind the characters in Leave The World Alone. I don’t have to like characters though. I don’t think it’s about that’s about being attuned to the natural world though, the whole idea is that it makes everything even the joyousness of nature extreme and uneasy.
I just read The Baby is Mine on the train and found it wonderful, so muxh better than My Sister the Serial Killer. Leave the World Behind I also read it October and absolutely adored it, even made a seperate little video on it. So fantastic the way it explores ideas of privilege and safety across many different faceats.
Ooh I don’t know if I found it much better as I loved My Sister The Serial Killer but I did really really like it. The Alam is amazing though. Sooo good.
The nature writing is definitely why Where the Crawdads is one of my top faves - nature writing is definitely my jam - mmm would be fab if someone could do a video about books with fabulous nature writing if they haven’t already 🤔😏
i remember an interview with the Seastate woman, it was really intense and weird and i wanted to read it immediately - and promptly forgot! Sam Byers is underrated, there's loads of funny satires by him if he's who i think he is
I totally agree about not enjoying crime novels focused on gangsters. I am making an assumption that's what you mean. In American contemporary life there are gangs - often in certain neighborhoods or areas- and the members are usually young. Gangsters are older and are organized - what we call organized crime in America (think Mafia). Anyway, I am not a fan of Rankin's books about gangsters but love the others. There seem to be a lot of Scottish crime novels focused on gangsters - maybe too many. I have avoided Where the Crawdads Sing after seeing a couple of scathing reviews. I will try to get it from the library and give it a go. Love you! P.S. because I love Denise Mina (but not the gangster themed books as much) AND Mary Queen of Scots, I immediately bought Rizzio. When Auturm bookhibearnation is over, I will read it!

Ha. I can definitely manage more than one vlog a month. With wrap ups it’s just been a hurdle in my head, which I think I’m now over. Thank goodness.
Hi Simon ! I am so impressed by the amount of work you can do in a month! I really enjoy your videos because I always discover new things (cities, books etc..). Thanks!
Ha. Well I am a bit of a workaholic. Though if you find a job you enjoy, you never work a day in your life. Or so they say. Lol.
So happy to see wrap ups back! :) no pressure though! Rizzio and The Baby is Mine both sound really interesting! Thanks for sharing. :)
I think if I just get on and do them - despite any, or in this case many, setbacks - then I will be fine. You’ve picked two short sharp gems there.
Hi Simon your wrap ups are back! I really miss your wrap ups! Can’t wait for 2022📚💕
Well they’re back for the rest of 2021 so you’ve not got to wait till next year. Lol

I can understand that those two books at the same time could be a bit of a classical overkill hahaha. The live show might even be on Tuesday now.
Fantastic wrap up , really enjoyed it & looking forward to trying some of these , especially Rizzio ! 😀
Glad you enjoyed it. Despite all the blinking issues recording it. Hahaha.

So pleased that you enjoyed it. The new book in the commissioned series Hex by Jenni Fagan is out now and it’s brilliant! Would highly recommend.

Hi Monae, I’m looking for Christmas book recommendations, what are you reading? 📘
@@karenkatz5260 I’m not reading a Christmas book right now. I’m reading Unhinged by Onley James at the moment.
i just finished sea state and loved it!! such a fascinating read!!
It’s a really unusual book in sense of subject matter and the genre of memoir.

I think you’d really like the book then.

Hmmm. It could be a tricky one. It’s quite gruesome and revels in it… again not in a sensational way.
Yes, the last video was an extravaganza!
