So many visits from my childhood, both to Sea World and the theme park under various names, was on that property, ranging from about 1992-2003. As a small child I knew it as "the Sea World in Aurora" but Geauga Lake was a Northeast Ohio legend. When it was at its peak as Six Flags Worlds of Adventure, I was never able to go (parents thought it would be too much for us), but looking back on it as an adult now, I really wish I'd had the chance.
Watching this, I can remember vividly the locations and looks of all the buildings and rides. Seeing nothing but flat concrete and rubble is quite sad.
Mine too. The Double Loop was my first coaster. Sea World was still right there too. I'm a lot older then 13 and I remember everything..... so sad to see it like this :'(
Nonya Biz Mine as well. I think I rode that double loop seven or eight times in a row the first time! I still can remember the beyond huge wave pool too.
Such a crappy thing, Cedar Fair (company who owned it) did to this park, and to the fans. Not only was it very easy to hold on to this park, or make to another seller, they didn't even as much give the fans whose highlights of childhood (mine for instance) a fond farewell. They just closed the gates, and the next day, said "It will not open anymore." Shame on you, cedar fair!
Good, it was lumber wood holding hands with pieces of cable going into the ground for support. What did it cost to build that coaster? Probably far less than the decorative rock with the fake wolf at the entrance. In its last years, it was a death trap and had to be closed for almost a whole season after an accident.
Well at least my childhood happened in cedar point. I do still have fond memories of geauga lake and that badass roller coaster xflite that my dad forced me on when I was 10
They tried to rebrand several times and became a sixflags, took over the Sea World side of the lake, made it into a water park, then made a huge kiddie 'snoopy camp' area and didn't make more thrill rides for the teen/adult crowd- that's what I remember. Once the park was sold to Cedar Fair, they kept the rides for three years and then sold them all off. My brother was driving to a work location and called me, saying "The corkscrew just drove past me on the freeway!" And that's how I found out it was closed... My first roller coaster ride ever was the big dipper, and it remains my favorite ride of all time.
Six Flags put 40 million into it and then even more money by buying SeaWorld and the attendance didn't pay the bills. Cedar Fair bought it, put money into it and built a new water park, and it still didn't help attendance. Given most of the roller coasters like the Raging Wolf Bobs were dingy, poorly built, and they only had a couple of steel coasters that went to around 150 feet, coaster enthusiasts were not really impressed with the park with the exception of the Big Dipper for nostalgia sake. It was a bad location and they talked about how it was practically in the middle of nowhere with a 1 lane road in and a 1 lane road out. It's funny how all these people talk about how awesome the place was, because they obviously weren't going there during the last season when attendance was really low. Plus "greed" being a reason they closed it is hilarious given they say the reason of being "no more competition for Cedar Point." Geauga Lake was never a threat to Cedar Point and wasn't even on the same level, and it continued to do extremely well while Six Flags was operating Geagua Lake. Cedar Fair bought the place with good intentions, but it obviously wasn't making money, they liquidated the assets (some of the coasters) moving them to other parks and closed the place. That's the story of Geagua Lake. Six Flags closed parks in similar fashion and it's the nature of business.
kings island is easily 4hrs away from just Akron, let alone this park... I live in Cinci and have family in Akron and attend UA, trust me. I've made the trip many times :)
Not quite. While there are dozens of reasons why it closed, the largest are because Six Flags over expanded the park (it was the largest theme park in the world at over 700 acres) and Cedar Fair spending themselves nearly into oblivion after purchasing Paramount Parks for a ludicrous amount of money.
Six flags. Just something about employees more worried about fucking then working, Trash can mountains, rides randomly not open and I know it was a shock for us Fast pass and HUGE lines among other issues.
I have a facebook group i put together with some great old pictures and video of the old parks when they were functioning. Search geauga lake 6 flags sea world and wild water kingdom. If you are interested. Thx!
Thank you for the memories. Went there between 96-01. Now I'm 27 and really wish I could rewind time and ride those rides I couldn't ride as a kid.

It would have been too much for you. At it's height, it was a monstrosity. 700 brutal acres of walking to do.

My childhood is in that rubble.
My too... I hardly remeber it though i was like five.. Im 13 now

That was a fun place.
Actually Six Flags took it under, Cedar Fair “tried” to save it
It is so easy to go there now and make love on the cool concrete. It was A LOT harder back when the rides were operating.
miss this place, i remember riding batman knight flight 8 times in a row....makes me want to place Roller Coaster Tycoon...
What's with the music? Should I dance to the demise of the places I once enjoyed? You are demented.
Where is the Big Dipper? Did I miss it in this fly over?
I've never been there, but I can almost picture what the rides were like.
How sad this is! My family spent many a happy time there!
Wow, I was there when I was 10 when my grandma and aunt took me there. The music doesn't match the sadness.
The music kinda annoyed me to. Very out of place.
they took the raging wolf bobs roller coaster down

Brian Blueskye Raging Wolf Bobs was never a "deathtrap."
so many memories there. upsetting to see it gone now.
You guys should have buzzed the car driving through there!
man, that's so sad.

You can still ride it, it's Firehawk at Kings Island.
Greenmonkey552 me to
Cool video, but very depressing as I had so many fun memories there growing up. Lose the terrible music.
What did you guys use to shoot this a drone?
yes
Great times growin up. Once our wish of both sides being combined it was too late.
Does anyone know why this park closed?

Ok gotcha. Thanks for responding!!

It never should have been expanded. Had it continued as a small family park it would still be open today.
I miss this place
Looks like something out of scooby doo
everything is gone just landscape where alot off good rides and shops. why are the water slides still there it been abandon for alot of years.
The waterpark is still opened. Only the ride side closed
sad what greed did to a amazing park
So sad...😔
I miss turtle beach :)
Why so high up? Would have been better detail a lot lower. Sux!
closed due to six flags not getting the rights to exspand and after that funds due to cedar point and kings island being only 2hrs and 5 hrs away
kings island is easily 4hrs away from just Akron, let alone this park... I live in Cinci and have family in Akron and attend UA, trust me. I've made the trip many times :)

What's with this music?!? Are you guys actually GLAD this park, nay, this classic is gone?
I sad 😢

hard to see. :'-(
Very poor choice of music for this shoot. A "funeral dirge" would be more appropriate.
Unfitting music ruined the video
SO who still thinks Capitalism works best?
