  • Google Executive Chairman and ex-CEO Eric Schmidt and former SVP of Products Jonathan Rosenberg came to Google over a decade ago as proven technology executives. At the time, the company was already well-known for doing things differently, reflecting the visionary- and frequently contrarian-principles of founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin. If Eric and Jonathan were going to succeed, they realized they would have to relearn everything they thought they knew about management and business.
In their new book, "How Google Works," Schmidt and Rosenberg pull back the curtain on the company that has changed the way we work and redefined what it takes to be successful in today’s business environment. The authors offer unprecedented access to Google's practices and the philosophies that define its unique culture, values and strategies.
Our moderator tonight, Marissa Mayer, knows a bit about how Google works, as she spent 13 years there, holding numerous positions including engineer, designer, product manager and executive, before departing to become President and CEO of Yahoo.
This event is part of the Museum's acclaimed Revolutionaries speaker series, featuring renowned innovators, business and technology leaders, and authors in enthralling conversations often with leading journalists.

I read the book in June 2019 and just viewed this video. Very insightful first hand stories of Google's culture, vision, strategies, and the hiring process of smart creatives. However, Temp/Vendors/Contractors (TVC) are not mentioned at all as integral part Google's workforce, extended workforce, practices. TVCs are close to 60% of Google's workforce and are key members of the its hiring strategy. Why not talk about TVC and what they contribute to Google's success?

so thats probably where the B players and specialists come in, right? The A players and generalists are a direct hire to do innovation for the company and the B players get to do the implementation work i guess. That would make sense for why not to talk about the TVC role because calling them the B players most likely upsets a lot of ppl. When you don't hire specialists you have to have them as TVC, right...

Sporting and competitive analogy on coworkers/players: playing against equals and lesser competitors teachs you bad habits, and playing with/for better than yourself is educational and extends your abilities.
Preferred form of communication? ...not necessarily millennial, but "park by feel" is popular, replaces "near enough for the bush", ie as far as possible away from exactitude and personal responsibility.
    In the nicest, fun way?

Trying to view this objectively but all I keep seeing are a bunch of billionaires sitting around talking about how to essentially increase profits (make more money!) while millions of people starve/ endure unfathomable hardships. I'd like to know which one of them has stocked a plane full of goods and sent it overseas to help people who don't even know what google is. Which is a good damn chunk of the world.

Eric is wrong about kids .. why should they be online all the time? Is that a good thing? Similar to how overthinking is not a good thing, being online reading and consuming information overload is not healthy for our wellbeing at all.
