- ...and by a dummy. The CP2 is supposed to be a super reliable engine, but my T7 suddenly decided it didn't want to rev past 6000rpm. The Bike Whisperer & I set about trying to remedy this mysterious situation with fuel filters, spark plugs, and other stuff. This video is just a record of an average bloke's experience and is intended as entertainment, not technical advice.

Haha, so easy to get in deep when the problem is right under our nose. Took some proper humour & humility to share this mate, good on ya!
Hahaha all good mate I'm not a mechanic and I don't pretend to be, if someone gets a larf or maybe even something helpful out of shit like this I'm happy to share 😁 Cheers Les
Mighty big of you to release this to us Josh, you could have easily just not put it up and we wouldn’t have known but instead you did, numerous points of interest within your little story too 😎👍
Put too much time and effort into filming and editing it all before I knew what the problem was hahaha I'm not too egotistical to let people know I'm not a qualified mechanic mate 😅Hopefully the vid helps someone out somewhere down the line and if not I'm sure it was worth a laugh for some 😬 Thanks for your support Calum cheers 🍻
Isn’t it great when you put yourself through all that stress and the solution is such a simple stupid little issue. We’ll done for sorting it out, saved us all the trouble. 👍🙏
Thanks fer watchin' Rodney 🤘
Respect for having the guts to post! We've all done some mad shit to our bikes. Thanks Bro. Appreciated.
🙏
Well done you sorted it in the end and learnt some shit alone the way 👍 Cheers... Mark
We're not mechanics aye mate! 😎🍻
Life's learnings Josh! I reckon it's great to work through a problem and find a fix yourself. It's not uncommon to think the problem is worse than it is. Thanks for being Human. 👍🤣
Just a lousy human mate not even a proper mechanic human 🤦♂ Hope you had a great Xmas Bob thanks for your support this year legend!
Mate I don't even own a T7 and found that one entertaining. Great effort on the diagnostics, we live we learn. Don't even get me started on my KTM 690, LOL!
A problematic KTM? Surely you jest! I wish the 690/701 were more reliable I'd jump to one I reckon
Legend Josh. You're saving the rest of us a whole lot of time and anguish, when......or if......we have the same problems👍 I did say...."wtf has he got the Uni pre-filter in there for......where's the FunnelWeb?" But it makes sense now🤙
Maybe the title of the video should be "when laziness bites a fool in the arse" hahaha cheers mate
Great advice for all T7 bike owners.I'm sure those owners will appreciate you sharing this info.Good for you.Happy Xmas.
Thanks Bruce same to you mate 🍻
Voyage of discovery. Thanks for educarting us.
😁
Love the honesty, well done. At least you’ll prevent others having the same issue
🙏
Good info. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Cheers thanks for the comment 🍻
So a mod to the mod was the culprit lol, cheers for the heads up mate
Good on ya Josh for your honesty. May save other people from the same fate. I run the uni pre filter, and have always been dubious about 700cc of air getting through it thousands of times a second. So yeah the spring is a must and your shortened snorkel idea also another must, to let enough air in around the sides of the filter. Great "suspenseful" video. 🤣🤣
The Funnelweb pre filter must breathe pretty well cause yeah it goes really well with that no dramas 🤙 Thanks for watching mate
Thanks for the honest vlog. You got me out to the garage and check my pre filter. It needed to be cleaned 😊👍🇦🇺. Thanks
😁🤙
Many thanks for your reply ......based upon your kind response I will keep a vigilant eye on my main UNI filter including the fitted UNI pre-filter. Kindest regards , gah
Quality! Thanks for the look inside the fuel tank.
No worries Matthew cheers mate
The type of fuel filter you have on the Tenere can be cleaned many times. Once you remove it, gently brush the entire outside of the filter with a used toothbrush dipped in petrol. Then rinse the filter off with petrol over a container large enough to catch the fuel. Next attach a length of fuel line (about 35cm) to the plastic nozzle of the filter (the part that pushes into the fuel pump). Carefully charge the fuel line with clean fuel and then gently blow the fuel back through the filter (backwards to the direction the fuel normally travels through the filter. Repeat this 3-4 times, and the filter will be gtg. One way to keep your tank and fuel clean is to always pump your fuel first into a fuel can. Let the debris settle to the bottom and never empty all of the contents of the can into the bike.
Thanks for the info on cleaning the filter 👍 Not very practical to always pump fuel into a jerry can on an adventure bike when you're often filling up mid ride tho. Cheers
@@MVDBR Ya, I should have said whenever possible. But it does help a lot. (old dirt biker here) On the older bikes we use to always have a cheap disposable inline filter (45 cents) between the tank and the carb. Clear plastic so you could keep an eye on it. Many a time we would pull that filter, shake it a bit and blow it out backwards and get back to riding. Better to keep a spare in our pockets of course.
Great video. Loads of information and taking responsibility for the problem
Top man
Thanks mate 🤙
If I ever get a T7 your the man I'll hit up for advice , tried and tested . Cheers 🍻
If this video proves anything it's that I'm not to be asked for advice on anything remotely mechanical 😁 But thanks for the vote of confidence sir 💪
I am glad you are making all these mistakes, so I can remember not to when I get a T7. Cheers for sharing it.
You live and learn Josh mate, thanks for sharing 👍
🙏
dude! you totally just saved my ass. Just got to Panama from NYC and started having this issue. I have the same air intake setup. thank you
Awesome, glad it helped out 🙏 appreciate the comment mate cheers
Merry Xmas Josh, another year under the belt and your still going strong with your vids despite some hiccups along the way. Nats bike in the shed????
Yeah long story there mate I'll be moving out of here soon tho. Cheers Glenn hope ya had a great Xmas mate appreciate your support this year bro 💪
That’s a general life rule I think. Start with the simplest and cheapest solutions!
Yeah definitely consider the obvious things first, no matter how unlikely they seem in ya mind 🤦♂
Thanks for the video I find this tech vids more interesting , than the bike tests [there are so many of them.
No worries cheers mate
Great info!
I got similar problem ... for me it was easier to find out as I was riding back home cruising at 120 km/h through a sand storm (I live in the middle east) then I suddenly lost power and could not ride over 100 km/h ... anyway , I got back home, pulled out the air filter ... it was packed with sand !!! Clean it ... back to normal 🙂
Nice video Josh..even though it wasn't the cause it was interesting to see how the fuel pump assembly works. My old Tenere 660 was running badly, a lack of power. Took the seat off to start checking and found a certain person (ahem!) had stashed their spare gloves in the DNA filter...🤣🙈 Cheers, Steve
😅😅 that's a good one mate hahahaha
Less serface area to draw air through, and limited to drawing air through the thickest part. Easy to see in hindsight, but I think that's easily be a 'gotcha' for many people, including myself, who just want to get out there and ride 😁
It was too obvious to be plausible hahaha just goes to show.
This happened to me too 😅 but in my case it was a filter skin to the foam pre-filter that was dusty. Filter skins are so effective that it doesn’t let anything pass to the main filter, so I’ll had to let it go. Now I’m using same uni filter that yours, but unmodified, in combination with oem main filter. Never had any problems since then 🥳😄
Wow I wouldn't have thought the filter skins would be that restrictive 😬
sounds like limp mode.. will keep watching to find out more
Excellent entertainment haha. Got me into the garage to check my prefilter and yup absolutely filthy but no issues. How was this bike breathing... after cleaning, noticed it had a tear so yeah thats how it was still going.
😬 yeah that does happen
Old age loss of memory 😂you got the job done in the end well done 👍 👍
Dum dum 😁 Who are you again? Hahaha
@@MVDBR I forgot 😂
Thanks for sharing this 👍
Thanks for leaving a comment 🍻
Interesting bro nice vid my T7 info grows 👍🏽
Always better to learn from other's mistakes rather than go through it yourself! Thanks for the comment
Me and a mate were out on our T7’s and he had the same issue. He rode mine and it obviously had more herbs, he couldn’t understand what was happening. He took the seat off so we could start to fault find the issue. 😂 “Hey mate, where’s the spring that should be inside the pre-filter? Did the same and ran it without the pre-filter and it was back to full power. Installed the spring and issue sorted 👍
Hahaha I actually noticed mine had been sucked into the snorkel one time without the spring 😅 Like the FW filter better. Thanks for sharing John
Mate if that's the worst issue with the CP2 you've won. More knowledge gained. I've had a couple of CP2's (321 and 655 cc versions) and they are bulletproof if looked after. Great vid!
Cheers 🤙
I had the same issue with mine. Changed plugs, fuel filter, didn’t fix it. Realized my air filter was dirty and also had the same pre filter on mine. But I already got a fuel pump from eBay. Took the pre filter off and installed the pump. Ran like new
well done
I used to race sprint karts, after one race/heat, the iridium plugs are no better than standard plugs. I used to fit a new plug for each race, ended up with a bucket full of iridium plugs with about 8 minutes run time on each, valued at $27.00 each lol. 2T engine though.
I used to run the dyno at the shop, so did test this on the dyno. The gains were minimal also, but in controlled class racing, every little gain does help once you add all the gains together.
The 701 has 2 fuel filters, one inline and one on the fuel pump. I had to change the ones on my 701SM at around 29000 ks. Pretty sure it was the inline filter causing the issues.
They last forever on 4 strokes tho
There is a scenario where the bike will not start, but Yamaha clearly requests an early service to fix it. I only have bikes so I do put them through rain repeatedly. I had just purchased my T7 and was under 1K miles. Twice I may have punched it in heavy rain well above 100 for extended durations. The bike would run very rough and after sitting not start. I took it to a dealer who billed me for a clean bill of health. I decided to check the cylinder synchronization to find even with my carb guages, the synchronization was wildly off. It was enough in adverse conditions to throw the bike. I eyeballed the sync for an hour on my inappropriate equipment and never had the issue for thousands of miles since.
Thanks for the info 🤘
Not that it matters now (maybe future fuel pump relayed "stuff") but the general setup (not sure of the T7) is the filter you changed is just the fuel pick up filter/screen and not the "real" filler. There is usually another high pressure filter built into the pump housing itself that is a much pricier component
Cheers 👌 I thought it looked a bit too coarse to be a proper filter
Thanks a lot
🤙🤙
It's great to live and learn. Some people never learn, you're not one of them you just elevated yourself Josh! Fuel pump assemblies are a scary area, I had a Husky motard that had fueling issues that were luckily fixed with the wisdom of a great mechanic. Luckily because a new fuel pump unit cost about half the price of the bike! And yes, Kiwis are the best people, never met a Kiwi I didn't like. Shout out to my boys in Wanganui! Chur chur!
Churr bro thet's choice aye are you a kiwi tu cuzz?
@MVDBR Enduro No cuz but I've been over there heaps bro. Like fuggin at least sex times (6) 😁 I annoy everyone here calling thongs jandals and shet bro it's choice az!
@@CRFLAus Holy fush n chups betmen!
@@MVDBR Fuckin A bro got beers in the chilli bin it's hot az today.
@@CRFLAus suck I'll jist nup downsteers end get a suxpeck 🍻
Great video just the same, learned quite a lot as we always do when we work on our own bikes. I'm so glad you got to the bottom of it and it ended up being something simple. You're not the first to try to fix something and found out it was something else that happens to us all.
That's it Dolly we're not all professional mechanics but yeah it's definitely good when the fix doesn't end up being something ominous and expensive 🤘
I had a feeling it was going to be this before I saw the solution. I installed a pre filter on my T7 after the 1st couple of rides and had the same prob, got out to the trails and wouldn't rev over 5500.
Pulled it out and haven't run one since..
Just buy more airfilters and swap them regularly.
It's already a pissy airbox and intake, it can use all the air it can get.
Yeah I remember the tech mentioning it when I took it for it's first service, that the pre-filters were a bad idea
wow, that is a tiny filter for such a high volume pump. Not very high surface area. I would be running and top tank pre filter.
So easy to get caught down a rabbit hole once an idea sticks in your head. Fire needs air, fuel & heat. Start with the easiest next time!
hey, just out of curiosity, can you check the fuel pump again, i believe you just changed the fuel strainer, the filter is the housing itself , anyways, good job, 3 basic things spark, fuel, air and "4th" compression i guess hahaha.... but anyways happy new year
Next time I have it out I'll check :) Cheers
Liked the Letterkenny reference....
Hahaha cheers, glad someone picked up on it 😎👌
Look on the bright side at least you changed the fuel filter, it looked pretty dirty
Shiezen occurs, and at least you know how to strip your fuel pump assy and replace the filter now😄
That's it!
We live and learn mate! 😅 Glad it wasn’t anything serious.. (although it can’t be, it’s a Yamaha)
Indeed, I was foolish to doubt 😎
47,000 miles on mine, still no problems.
💪
5 min in I’m thinking not fuel filter…
Brilliant
To funny Josh, don't know till you know.
Still breathin' still learnin' 😎
I had the same issue about year and half ago with the funnel web. Wish I had put a video up so you didn’t have to be through the ordeal. Oil the fweb but don’t leave it to thick other wise you have the same issue.
Cheers 🙏 I've not had the same thing happen with the FW as yet 👌
I only use amsoil for my car n Yahama r7 cp2
Remove the pre filter & try it.
Well, lesson learned 😂, shit what a pain 🙈
🤦♂
Glad you got to the bottom of it 🙂
Me too mate I don't have the Beta RR for backup!
@@MVDBR I ride so slowly, I'd not notice I couldn't rev beyond 6k lol
@@HippoDrones hahahah clearly it took me a while to notice 🙈😬
@@MVDBR 🤣
Check the fuel pressure first
The main reason I sold my T7 was it was due for a spark plug change LOL
😅 don't blame ya hahaha
Many thanks for the video....HOWEVER, the frustrating thing is that the actual problem with the Uni Filter was not clearly defined. What is the actual problem with the Uni air filter ??? Obviously, a dirty air filter can contribute towards poor engine performance...we all know that....but what is the actual problem with the Uni air filter ? I'm not all that sure from watching this video. Kindest regards gah (Engineer) Australia
I thought it was fairly clearly explained at 17:08 🤷♂ Essentially the big springs in the Unifilters wear holes in the foam after some time (both the pre filter and the main filter), which is not a problem if you replace them regularly. But they're pretty expensive... I thought I could get more life out of the pre filter by removing the spring and cutting some of the foam off, but the thicker foam in the end of the filter turned out to be too restrictive. Funnelweb (and other) filters don't have this issue.
Thats how we learn :)
That's it!
Blocked fuel filter will make the engine surge under power
LOL a happy ending
Timing chain
The things you do to create a video 😆 🤣
😄☕🇳🇴Nice work mate
Detective Josh to the rescue hahaha
@@MVDBR 😄😄you didnt give up thoe and took it to a dealer 😎
@@toby7504 fuck no, last resort bro
You have another channel?
Yeh kinda started it initially to do the install type vids and stuff on, and just leave this channel for the rides. But a wise man convinced me it was foolish so I abandoned it.
Haha just human he 👍🏼
LOL!
Mmm trusty CP2 issues ay. Totally ur own doing🤣
Thanks for that Captain Obvious 😉
I have to be honest. A 20 minute video on this is fine, except you don't get to the point until 17 minutes in and there's no information in the description, and no time stamp to the part that EVERYONE actually wants to see and that will actually educate people. If I wanted to watch someone struggle to troubleshoot an issue, I'd put a mirror in my garage. ;) Cheers dude. I meant this as a constructive criticism and think you're great.
Haha thanks, I think. To be honest this was more of an attempt at an entertainment piece, not education. Didn't think anyone else anywhere could actually be this dumb 😅
Yep entertainment purposes 🤣🤣 but one good thing is you changed the fuel filter. Definitely would have needed doing anyway. Trust you to find the cheap way out but having to buy a pump to get a filter thats ridiculous 😒
Mr AirBnb thanks for stopping by 😁
🤣🤣😉🍺

Thanks for not being a WeenieBoi wearing gloves every time you pickup a tool.
I am a weenieBoi. I am always wearing gloves, and just the other day I decided not to wear gloves and cut myself on some pneumatic staples. Hahahahha! Now that's a true WeenieBoi right there.
