Regardless of the veracity of this story, I will always wonder why parents care so much that childfree people "understand that they should have children"? Is it because they feel miserable being parents and don't want childfree people to feel happy around them? Because it makes no sense as to why they would feel entitled to complain and force others to have children when they already said they don't want any.
Op isn’t the ahole if the kids aren’t old enough to know it’s a stupid idea to put a crayon up their nose then they aren’t old enough to stay home alone for 10 minutes let alone 30 minutes. If a kid isn’t old enough or knows how to cook they shouldn’t be left alone for a couple of hours.
If you have kids you are not entitled to the time of children free people! They chose to not have kids so suck it up and deal with if they say no to helping out.
For a woman who lectures a lot on the importance of being a mother, the SIL sure is very reckless. Quite hypocritical of her to even push others to have kids when she herself is unfit to be one in the first place. I wonder why people so incompetent to be parents chose to have kids anyways?
I mean the least SIL can do is leave some food for them and tell them to dial 911 should something happened to one of the siblings (the kids) before going on the shopping spree or better yet just tell her neighbors to babysit
@@gachagoddesskim7630 Ehhh leaving children unsupervised like that and advising them to call 911 when necessary is also a great way to get in trouble with the CPS since it’d also be considered child abandonment.

The MIL has the audacity to make threats of a lawsuit against OP and her husband… wow.
Since it's an AITA story: heck no, NTA! Based on what OP has described about the SIL, I get very disturbing implications, cause it certainly sounds like the SIL only sees her children as ATM cards, since it's revealed that the ex is well off (he paid a huge alimony AND child support). Plus, since the ex only sees his children once a month pre-updates, it's very easy for the SIL to masquerade being a caring mother while she pushes her meal tickets off to others while living up life by herself (and MIL, since she is practically her mother's "mini-me"). At the very least, I am glad this story has a happy ending, with the niece and nephews being in the care of the parent that actually gave a damn. Screw the SIL and MIL, they brought this upon themselves.
