    The video is quite long but the content is little, in 19 minutes you could have mentioned things like price of seedlings, how long the trees take to mature and other best practices for a successful yield. Napita naya.

    Well done on such a great project. Where can we get pine seedlings in Lusaka?

    • @mondofarms4343
      @mondofarms4343  3 года назад +4

      For the first two years, we ordered the pine seedlings from a supplier who grows them on the Copperbelt. But this was quite a hassle and there was a high cost of transport. So this year, we started to grow our own seedlings at Winterthorn.
      Its going very well so far and we will have some ready for pre-sale to other farmers in the next few weeks. Delivery will be by December.

      They were applying a foliar fertiliser called Omniboost.
      That was possible back when we only had a few trees back in the early days. But these days, it would be difficult to cover the much wider area we have planted.

      Mwandi Ba Alex, we never do that on the Mondo Farms Channel.
      Other channels share such data, but we are primarily a business, and we choose to keep the financial details of our business proprietary.
      All the best

      It depends on the spacing of the trees. Initially, we were planting at 2m, but at our new spacing of 2.7m between stems, we should get about 1,300 stems/Ha

      Thanks ba Frank. Real "commercial" plantation of timber trees are HUGE.
      We're talking thousands and thousands of hectares like the ZAFFICO ones in the Copperbelt.
      Most plantations established by private entities are much, much smaller. It's good to be realistic about size and scale.
      We refer to what we are doing at Winterthorn as a pilot plantation. We have been using it to learn about growing trees for several years and built experience. We plan to establish a much bigger plantation later further out along the Great East Road.
      Regarding harvesting, pine trees are usually taken after 12-14 years (depending on size and growth), and it's a one-off. They don't grow again. That is why one has to plant a succession each year.
      Eucalyptus trees are usually harvested after 6-8 years (depending on growth and size). Technically, they can grow again from the stump, but the second growth is much slower and takes a lot more years.

    Hi Mr. Folotoya, any need for irrigation?

    • @mondofarms4343
      @mondofarms4343  7 месяцев назад

      Timber plantations are not normally irrigated.
      We are growing trees that would normally look after themselves in nature.
      Hiwever, as climate change gives us more erratic rainfall and higher temperatures, we have started watering the seedlings just after they are transplanted to give them better establishment. Things are not as straightforward as they used to be.

      We hope to do that one day, but for now, we do what is proven. Seedlings are available and the expertise is there.
      Also importantly, the market for pine and eucalyptus is wide.
