Jay is cool for recognizing everyday people on his show. I was on t.v. one time in my llife and watching myself on t.v. was something I'll never forget. Most people never get the opportunity. Bravo, jay. You seem to be a very unselfish person and that is getting very rare these days.
yes in Australia there is a company making volkswagen karmann ghia replicas with a full awd WRX underpinnings and a slightly widened body .. looks and drives amazing .. great video jay

Hey idiot, "replica" means 'exact copy'. A 1990's subaru legacy engine is NOT a 356 Porsche Boxer engine therefore it is NOT a "replica". You're a f-ing MORON.
Jedidah Fire boy what a jerk, so how many replicas have Porsche engines in them don't most have VW engines? Do replicas have metal body's like Porsche or fiberglass, what about the floor pans are they Porsche or VW based?
I love it when Jay shows us a kit car, movie car, or some other car that is interesting and within reach of the working class. It’s a welcome addition to the dreamer cars. Well done, Tom; love your car. Seems like a blast.
The boxer engine was patented in 1896 by engineer Karl Benz who called it the contra engine. The guy did A GREAT JOB!!!! Personally think people should respect all the hours sweat blood and probably tears just to build this beautiful car! When people feel offended get mad it is because they feel fooled....... They can't stand that someone build a replica this good! I honestly respect that.
It is nice that Jay takes the time to make these free videos or at least lets them be available at no cost to watch and enjoy, as I truly enjoy all of them.
He monetizes these but yes it being available for free is good for us and also widens the reach of these videos. Also, it costs jay leno money to make these. People are less and less welcoming of paid streaming services these days.
Jedidah Fire so here is an actual definition of a replica, note the last sentence you must feel pretty dumb now huh: Background: On Dec. 4, 2015, lawmakers in Washington, DC enacted legislation allowing low volume manufacturers of replica vehicles to sell turn-key cars to their customers. The historic law expands customer options. Enthusiasts can still build custom cars and construct kit cars on their own. However, they will also have the option of buying a replica just like any other new car and driving it off the lot (or from the factory). Definitions: Low volume manufacturer: a motor vehicle manufacturer whose annual worldwide production (including by a parent or subsidiary of the manufacturer) is not more than 5,000 motor vehicles each year. The company can sell up to 325 replica vehicles in the U.S. each year, with no limit on the number of incomplete kit cars that can be sold. A replica vehicle is a vehicle that resembles the body of another motor vehicle produced at least 25 years ago (’32 Roadster, ’65 Cobra, etc.).
I'd rather have an old original with patina and good mechanical bits. I'd drive the crap out of it and do the maintenance. I'd wash the mud and dirt off regularly to prevent rust.
James, you have a very valid point in that original patina on an original car is truly the desirable option. The realistic problem is that they are now 67 years old and the parts and the cars are getting scarce . This guy's car is really well presented and about the only thing I could think of that would really jump out at me is that the Subaru water-cooled engine doesn't have the air-cooled clattering noise and I'm a bit more attuned to that than some folks might be. I used to sell BMW/VW/Subaru in another life-time and a manager that I had previously worked for stopped by to check out the WRX. They were just coming out at that time. He was a "big-time" Porsche fan and owner. While we were on the way back to the shop, after a rather quick run through a local canyon twisty-bit he commented that it really sounded a lot like an old 356 because of the similar boxer engine, it just didn't have the air-cooled rattle. He certainly liked the power though.
I know im asking randomly but does anybody know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account..? I somehow forgot my password. I would love any tricks you can give me.
@Cameron Titus thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process atm. Takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
What a nice car and sounds great too. It reminds of the old school gta game where you look down on the city from a birds eye view and it was full of these older cars. I think it was gta2 or gta1. I loved that game.
I've always been amazed at Jay's cameraman. The photography is always so great whether in the shop or on the road. A beautiful woman needs a good cameraman so we can be bedazzled with her beauty. Jay's cameraman bedazzles us with the outstanding beauty of all parts of the csr. Photography tells the story of the product.
Jay is brutal honest when it comes down to originality.. Lol the poor guy had steam coming out his ears but the survival kit in a car is highly desirable to me. WWIII you say? Proceeds to hop in Porche and retreat to the hills of Canada. Always note that Jay is an expert in coolant systems, something tells me he's overheated something irreplaceable.. Good expert video.

Jay is the best!!! And praise to JPS for building even the Coupe version of these cars... look them up! Jay you should have JPS the original builders at your garage

That is a cool, little car. Those things always looked great, and it's lovely to see such a good looking replica. I'd love to cruise around in that thing all day. The Subaru 2.5L is a very nice engine, good power, reasonable weight, quite reliable, and pretty bulletproof. Some may jab at headgasket leaks, but that was an early model problem with cheap gaskets. Always loved those Speedster's! I guess, for the extra performance and the extra comfort, I'd settle for this, as opposed to the Original. It looks fantastic!
I got a lot of flack for asking on a AC COBRA page on facebook just last week for asking if anyone had built one with a Subaru engine or 4wd as kit car weekend driver registrations are cheaper for 4cyl in Australia. I love this segment jay
What a great build! As an owner of two BMW motorcycles with Boxer motors, as well as a Subaru, I can attest to the torque and bullet-proof aspects of the Boxers... Now if I only had a repla-Porsche!
I agree it would be fun, but the complexity level would skyrocket. As he said, the 5spd takes significant work and imagine trying to get proper air flow to an intercooler and fit all the piping under the rear hood... I would just build out a nice 2.5 and be happy with 200hp wheel. You can build a 2.5 pretty easily to 200hp, many 2.5rs rally cars are 180-200hp. Add short gearing and it would be a blast! Use all the power all the time and not have the complexity and heat that a turbo will bring.
During the intro on ramp run I was like "Huh?".. But then with the news of it being a kit car with a scoobie engine I was like "Oh".. Speaking of, maybe dude should lose the 1600 super and replace it with a 2500 super badge! Also, as a late gen X'er, early Y'er (not a "millennial" dammit!) I think the point made at 15:50 should be made public!! Too many my age and younger get caught up on raw numbers, not realizing that there's so much more to a car than that
Jay - as you might already know, $800 for a car in 1967 is ~$6k in 2016 (adjusted for inflation). i think your brother was smart to buy one, and not so smart to sell it as you know what $6k gets you today!
Seems to be the only problem with the whole car. It may be great for the L.A. area, but not anywhere else in North America, especially this time of year.
It may hang that low because of the radiator for the Subaru engine, although with the torsion bar suspension of the old Beetle donor chassis why do you need an anti roll bar?
No surprise here. Porsche and Subaru are both known for using boxer engines(both normally aspirated and turbocharged). It's too bad both companies never merged together. Imagine the possibilities that could have been made.
I ran a Chesil Speedster in the UK for 10 years. It eventually ended up with a Suzuki Hayabusa motor in the back married to the original Beetle box. That meant 2 gearsticks! Select forward on the Beetle box then over to sequential..or the same in reverse! It was crazy. Stack instruments, Honda radiator, vented discs and coil over shocks. It went like the clappers and sounded awesome. Rev limiter set to 10.5k! The idea was to run it for a while to get the measure of it and then make the necessary improvements, which was going to include turbos. That'd given about 400 hp! But sadly, in the hands of a friend when we were at Le Mans in 2006, it bit the dust. We slid sideways on to a Citroen. Result not good. I spent 9 days in a coma and 63 days in hospital! lol! I should stress this wasn't the car's fault. It was driver error.
I would have to strongly disagree that the engineering has not been figured out with the flipped ring gear on the Subaru transmission. SubaruGears has this swap completely dialed in
Ian Hobday Agreed, this car just needs a decently build 2.5. At 1700#, a 200whp engine would be VERY fun, a turbo ruins the experience, especially on a car that is so light and just does not need the extra power and complexity.
Jay needs a booster seat !!! A while ago I saw a car blowing up behind me - all sorts of spew and then I realized it was Jay in one of his steam Hoop-Dees making the steam and racket. Hilarious. Used to see him at Autobooks store here in Burbank/NoHo on weekends before the ownership (and vibe) changed.
Very nicely done, if he hadn't have said the engine was out of a Subaru, you'd never know, plus the engine is California legal, and the one in the Porch probably wasn't. Still I'd like to see the video of the Porch, just to see what Judge Leno would say about it. But still this replica is really close to what Porsche may have done if they would have had the parts available in 1957. Thanks Jay.
Yeah of all the Subaru motors to use, WHY the EJ25D? The EJ251 SOHC motor was more plentiful, more reliable, and is easier to work on, and makes the same power.
Inspired choice of motor, and a very beautiful car. Would love to build something like this one day. And then drive the wheels off it for the rest of time. Very much on my bucket list.
Jay is cool for recognizing everyday people on his show. I was on t.v. one time in my llife and watching myself on t.v. was something I'll never forget. Most people never get the opportunity. Bravo, jay. You seem to be a very unselfish person and that is getting very rare these days.

You can tell Tom is super nervous in there, but what car guy wouldn't be! I definitely give him props for still coming on and getting through it well.
Jay is definitely the man,
The Tonight Show will never be the same without him. Thanks Jay for all the great years you brought to America...
Jay knows his cars. I like what he does for veterans. He is red, white, and blue. Good man!
Jay is the best. And he is just so kind to his guests. This replica Speedster is just superb. And those SoCal roads!
yes in Australia there is a company making volkswagen karmann ghia replicas with a full awd WRX underpinnings and a slightly widened body .. looks and drives amazing .. great video jay

If it came with a USB cable dangling from its rear you could use it as a mouse on almost any PC platform. Bonus!

TheEdis97 I spotted that too. I'm betting he was in the way of Jay being in the shot.
Nice car. It's all about building something that makes you happy that others can also enjoy as it goes by.
"You look like a circus bear driving this thing." LOL
Code3Paris Funny thing is, RIGHT as I was reading your comment, he said that. o.0
revolutionday1 h
SheriffHugh Tokes you are not funny
make that two bears
SINCE THE SEATS WERE CUSTOM MADE I'D IMAGINE IT WAS FITTED FOR THE OWNER AND THE PASSENGER FITTED FOR HIS WIFE. SO HE WOULD SIT LOWER.
i love my 356 but I'm glad he's enjoying this , i don't really like remakes but lately i think making a 550 spider would be cool .
The dangling the front anti-roll bar is interesting.
It'll scrape before you do damage to the radiator. Low tech protection!
So a skid plate of sorts.
dotheymakethatformen. I wasn't sure what that was an fluid line at first but your right a front control arm
such an iconic car, absolutely beautiful
Jay - as you might already know, $800 for a car in 1967 is ~$6k in 2016 (adjusted for inflation). i think your brother was smart to buy one, and not so smart to sell it as you know what $6k gets you today!
for a replica it is incredible
is that a front sway bar hanging down so low? can see it as he goes up the on ramp. looks like it could catch on somethin
I want one so bad! Love these videos, Jay is just a top guy, he loves cars, thats all that matters.
looked like the front sway bar was loose and dragging the ground
you can see it dangling there.. vw sway bar does do that..lol
Yep I heard it scrape too.
Seems to be the only problem with the whole car. It may be great for the L.A. area, but not anywhere else in North America, especially this time of year.
Yep that was the first thing I saw. Accident waiting to happen......... damage at the very least.
Did anyone see that hand at 8:00
Came here to say that. lmao
"Move! You're blocking Jay!"
hahaha what was that for? i didnt see any problem where he was standing
Can't be too careful when a guy of that size is in the shot XD
"It's a whole lotta fun" says everything!!!
Well it'd help if "replica" was in the title of the video
Liking the low camera angle at 17:56 to 17:59... Sweet "Speedster" lines at 12:18 to 12:20!
Hi, I'm here to nitpick every little thing because I hate my life and I want everyone to know it
- every broke car guy
The cars look is amazing , replica or not! STI engine swap? :)
Awesome. It's great that it has a larger more livable interior as well. Thx j.
I would have to strongly disagree that the engineering has not been figured out with the flipped ring gear on the Subaru transmission. SubaruGears has this swap completely dialed in
...which begs the question...could this replica be done as an AWD car?
...AWD but then Turbo cause you can never have enough Power.
There was plenty of room in that engine bay for a turbo...
thejerg It's not just the space, it's the heat a turbo would make and trying to cool that without modifying the body for additional air intakes.
When Jay rolls a Subaru for a few hours.
Thanks Jay.
touched by the Hand of God at 7:59
I put a 2.5 Subaru engine in my 66 Porsche 912. Much more power than stock. Love it.
It really is pretty bulletproof" unless you count headgaskets >.>
Skwisgar2322 Only a significant issue for turbo applications.
tell that to my 1999 LGT.
nar lady I know had a NA one blow up and she had to get a new engine (late 90s I think)
Yeah of all the Subaru motors to use, WHY the EJ25D? The EJ251 SOHC motor was more plentiful, more reliable, and is easier to work on, and makes the same power.
Had that motor is a buggy. You only blow head gaskets if you overheat it and cook the heads. Treated properly they will do half a million miles.
Inspired choice of motor, and a very beautiful car. Would love to build something like this one day. And then drive the wheels off it for the rest of time. Very much on my bucket list.
