    Thank you. This was very helpful. I'm looking at replacing a window unit with a minisplit in a small house in Florida. Now I understand why my doors were undercut. I'm going to search your page for more videos on minisplits. My house is 2 bed/1 bath, single story, 900 sq feet. Do you think one properly sized minisplit would work for me too? The floorplan is similar with the unit in the living/dining room in the wall opposite the bedroom doors about 15 feet away.

    The biggest hurdle i'm running into is sizing the output specifically because of temperature swings, for reference, my existing houses central unit is (best I can guess searching the model numbers i've found) a 3 ton AC and a 5 ton Propane Furnace, my goal is to heat and cool the basement independently of the upstairs for when the upstairs is vacant so I can shut off the central unit and save money over the cost of propane heating the whole house, but what i'm learning about mini-splits is that as temperature goes lower their efficiency drops and they end up putting out less BTU's losing upwards of like 37-38% of their BTU output as you approach the bottom end of their functioning temperature range, so I don't know if I should size the thing to be able to supply the cooling load I need (which isn't much in the basement, even on the hottest summer days the basement will never hit 80 degrees with ZERO AC of any kind) or size it for the worst case heating load when factoring in BTU loss with temperature drop.

    Tad i put 2 90k mini splits in a trailer 1 head in living room one in master bedroom. The bedroom was over heating when weather got mild. Samsung still runs hot refrigerant through the other heads even when satisfied for oil return purposes with fan on ultra low. I was able to talk to tech support and shut fan off with changing parameters but the next time i install a fjm with 1 head in a small room i will explain to customer about the over heating issue.when its - 3 out its great when it's 45 power small room head down. Great video and wise choice.

    At 1:30 you said the positive pressure from the head unit will force air under the door to the adjacent room. How can a fan from a ductless head unit create positive pressure in a room if the supply and return are equal in pressure at the unit.

    everything looked really good.
    For proper drainage on the outdoor unit, per most manufactures of mini splits, set up off of the plastic pad a little bit.
    Also, don't forget to silicone (clear) around the indoor unit perimeter, to prevent dirty air from entering. Its easy to cut with a razor blade if cleaning unit in the future.

  • @jackalay23
    @jackalay23 2 года назад +1

    Subscribed. I have a question. I have a 3000 Sq ft Cape Cod in KY. Fortunately it was built with 2 Central systems. One for the upstairs and one for the main floor and basement. Unfortunately when I bought the house all the equipment was trash. I have already replaced the downstairs unit with a properly sized 2.5 ton central unit with propane furnace. The upstairs is my problem. Currently the upstairs has no heat but is easily heated by convection in the winter via my downstairs furnace and wood burner. During summer I run 8000BTU window units in the 2 bedroom dormers. The third dormer window is in the center and has no unit. That area is slightly warmer than the bedrooms but is tolerable since it contains the stairs and a open balcony to the first floor. The old furnace and ducts are in the attic. I DO NOT want to install a central air handler in the attic again. I would prefer to get the ducts out of the attic as well but this is impossible due to the layout. I am considering 2 options. One - new central unit and ductwork (old duct is flex and complete crap). Air handler would be moved to large bonus room over garage at one end of house. New ducts would be spray foamed and buried. Two - install some type of ductless system. All 4 areas are large 250-300sq ft but since it is upstairs and the rooms are not open to each other I would need a head in each room I would assume. What are your thoughts on my problem? Would the difficulty and cost of installing so many ductless units in an existing home outweigh the benefits?

    • @TaddyDigest
      @TaddyDigest  2 года назад

      Costs for installing a Mini split versus a unit and duck work is about the same
      Mini splits are super efficient so if there's a way to conceal all the piping and make it look nice I would go with mini splits but really just depends on the layout of your project

    I installed a Rheem 3-ton multi-zone with electronic TXV. My apprentice opened up service valve and ran to his mommy as R410 sprayed out from 1/4" line flar nut. I heard loud hissing and ran out turn off valve. I tighten nut. Deep down I knew the only way I would know charge was good on a 52 degree was to weighj it in. I still dont charge any HP in heat mode cause I struggle. .Had 6lbs to go and it ran for 5 second and shut off. The error code was flashing low refergerant. So tried to locate low pressure switch. No high or low switch at all, so recoverd 2lbs micron down to 350. Weighed in 4lbs out of 11 wouldn't take refrigerant with compressor off Was about to force it in with recovery.
    I tried to reset code to get compressor on to force in R410a.1 hour scratching bald head. Then it dawned to me....a ray of light hit my right cheek...Service Manuel I should read it. Going against protocol opened u book and it was telling me to use a cyclopoid magnet. Ya know the over priced cyclopoid magnet to help free stuck reversing valve.
    Sure as s*** the magnet reset TXV and error code

If I use closed cell spray foam and mini splits should I worry about indoor air pollution or am I good? Do I need an ERV or HRV or will a large plug in stand alone dehumidifier be ok. Do I actually need to bring fresh filtered air into the house and old stale air out? Should I worry about Radon in the house

My occupants are a wide mix of heights and I was thinking of adding temp controllers instead of just letting the front of the unit serve as a controller. And I'm not saying anything bad by what you're doing I understand what you're up to and what you're trying to do for a person and maybe they don't have the extra money to spend I understand that too I've just been looking into him and I know they make them in 110 volts and 208 volts and I was just thinking one day if you were going to put one in your house and you can buy one with two or three heads you might as well just put them in and then you would have extra if you absolutely needed it or if like one room was just a little hot and you had some family over something you could turn it on too

      One head, one outdoor unit = very simple and very cost effective

    Where is this “house“ located? If I tried to do any of the stuff to my garage in my area (converted to a living unit, adding bedrooms, etc.) I’d probably be sent to jail.

    Let's be honest it's not about what works it's about what sells for the smallest investment possible.

    I guess if the person living there doesn’t mind sleeping with his bedroom door open every night it works.

    I realize it isn't the point of this video but what a bleak looking building.
