I wish my mom could’ve watched this. She sadly passed away last year. She was a big fan of Dame Judi Dench as well as a huge Shakespeare buff and she also loved the Globe Theater of course.
In the 1990’s she was an integral part in the United States with coordinating the fundraising efforts to build this theater. She even worked with Sam Wanamaker a few times before he passed away and me and her were at the grand opening of the Globe in June 1997. A night I will forever remember.
If she was still here right now I’d be texting her a link to this video and she would’ve loved it. I miss you mom! ❤️

That's impressive! I was a 21-year-old American girl traveling through England with friends in May 1997 - we were able to walk into the nearly finished Globe and look around. How we longed to be there for the grand opening!

I just finished Shakespeare: The Man Who Pays the Rent. I not only loved the book, I fell in in love with Judi Dench. She's brilliant, funny, generous, wise, and self-critical in the most instructive ways. Anyone involved in the theater should read this book, including playgoers, because she has such reverence for the audience and how, as an actor, she's intent on serving them. But the book goes beyond that because it's about bring a human being. I marked up my copy of the book because she has so many wonderful things to say about Shakespeare, her career, her fellow actors, and life itself. I needed to highlight them and , by writing them down, remembering and heeding them.

Shakespeare has been with me all my life....l'm 87. My Senior English teacher,, Jerald Jordan read the plays to us, with such love. l think that actors or teachers who share these wonderful works will never know how many they have touched. Anyway, l love this conversation....thank you. Best regards from the Ozarks usa

You could experience the same Shakespeare play over a 20 year period, every time the take away’s would be vastly different because people grow over time. Depending on where a person is in his/her life, Shakespeare will affect him/her differently. That’s why he is still and will remain, forever relevant!!

I read it as soon as it came out. It's so true what he says. I want to go back and read Shakespeare again. And the dialogue between these two brings out the best of Judi's amazing knowledge of Shakespeare and her amazing insights into his world of theatre. 5 stars bravo!

"What bloody man is that?" Richard Burton tells the story of a school production of Macbeth in Wales. The boy who played Duncan said "I can't say that -my mum and my Gran will be in the audience". So the director explained that 'bloody"' meant that the soldier was covered in blood and it wasn't rude So it comes to the first night. And his family are all there in the front rwo (dressed according to R Burton in bmbazine black). The boy is terified. So he looks at the soldier and in a frightened voice says "Who is this bugger?"

I'm 49 next month, maybe I should give Shakespeare another go. When I was a teenager, like so many, when our English teacher mentioned Shakespeare we all gave the subscribed groan, which sealed our experience. Shame that. :)

Watch a live production online or in person. It comes alive when you hear great actors performing it.
