Tektro had to go! Clinton said he bled them many times, and they couldn’t be revived.

It's mind boggling how many people drop all that coin for a nice bike, then never maintain their suspension. Some once they notice decreased performance they think they need an upgrade. Others if they finally try to service it there's already damage to the stanchions or sliders. Some pass the buck and sell the bike then buy a new bike.

    • @EvansMTBSaga
      @EvansMTBSaga  Год назад +12

I wish I would've mentioned that. With fork seals that bad I was surprised there wasn't any stanchion damage

its a 16 year old kid, i didnt know anything about my bike at that age and i had no clue about suspension maintenance.
this costs a decent amount of money and if his parents dont ride they wouldnt know its needed and would be skeptical about spending more money on the bike.

For the Derailure hanger alignment, try to have one point (Can be the Valve or another point on the wheel) and do the 360 check of every angle with that same point, if you have a slight bend rim you won't get the hanger 99% straight if you do it like you do how you've done it in the Video

I have the Trance x 2 which is very similar; the problems you list are close to normal even for near new Trances.
The dealer had never set derailleur limits or indexing, the chain clutch was off, the brakes sealed like crazy, the front fork bushings on one side were rattling, and the bottle cage rivnuts were loose.
Most of the issues were just maintenance problems as on your example.
I think it is a decent bike and I really enjoy riding mine.

1:31 this is actually what Fox and Rockshox use, but they are black instead. But Rockshhox use grey horrible seals on some forks, those had a bad failing rate, I had a fork that came covered in oil, and seals were off. They were out of spec. But the Fox seals were always good, but no wonder, they were SKF, Swedish goodness. But with the green seals, you know it's SKF from far away.

I don't think it was a bad choice to take off the Tektro's, but I would say it might have come from a misinformed place. A lot of Tektro's, outside of the lowest end brakes they have, are really good brakes for their cost. Also, most of their servicing, including fluid, is interchangable with Shimanos. They are certainly worthwhile brakes. But a very good video, love the reaction, I hope it inspires him to take better care of his bike going forward. I remember being that age and thinking I couldn't take care of my bike, now I realize I can't afford not to.

Man that Commodore 64 style music starting at 09:06 takes me straight back to my childhood. Crazy nostalgic. What is the name of that song??

I personally think that a rear shock service is easier than a fork service. Also the brakes were a huge upgrade, I had those tektro brakes on a rental bike and they were awful.

@@EvansMTBSaga yeah no tools required and it’s easy as pulling seals off and putting new ones in, I work at a local bike shop and that’s probably my favorite thing to do

It's sad to see a bike go without maintenance. The shock isn't a big deal to service. Pretty easy, like they said a pick set is mostly it, but I like using plastic pick sets the best so you don't scratch up any surfaces.

    2 mistakes I found
1-Dont put a new chain on a old cassette if its 9ish speed or above. 9 speed may or may not work. anything below I have found it works and obviously the exception is when the cassette is near new. I had a 12 speed eagle cassette a while back that I ended up snaping the chain and bending pins after 200 miles(whole groupset was brand new) and the chain failed to mesh with the cogs I used the most
2- This bike is far from old. it has a tapered headtube, maestro linkage and a truaxle so this bike is definitely not old or shitty.

If you say the bike is far from old, then how did I put a new chain on an "old cassette"? You're talking like a bike shop salesman and I've never heard anyone recommend that.

@@EvansMTBSaga the less the speeds on a cassette the more you can get away with. The cassette didnt even look like it had worn off the coating so I think thats why it went well. Ive been mechanic since I was a wee little boy. Personally I changed the chain only and had no problems until moved into higher speeds. Great videos man overall I dont mean any disrespect its just what Ive seen since working on bikes. I did dislike the part where you called me a bike salesman, I have had bad encounters with them as a young lad who didnt have much money for a "top tier" bike. Nonetheless I like your videos
