Hey Alan, love your reviews man! Just wondering if you still think the Motion+ is a better buy than the Charge 5 if the C5 is cheaper and also now having its own EQ on the JBL app? I can pick up a C5 for 88£ vs 100£ for the M+ in my area. It would mostly be used around 70% volume in a room and backyard/beach jamming. Your opinion would be very helpful!

very detailed and professional review. great job. been testing the Motion Boom for 3 days now, it's growing on me from day to day. I just have one issue as I did with the motion plus - maybe it's my imagination but I sense these new speakers (BT version 5.0) have stronger radiation because their range is 4 times more than version 4.1 (Flip 3 and Charge 3 are fine in that department) and it gives me a headache after a while. I ordered some EMF protection stickers although I'm not sure they will help to reduce the damage but it's worth a try. Anyway, thanks again, Alan.
That's interesting. I actually can't use Bluetooth headphones or earbuds because of headache issues. But for speakers it's fine since they're not directly on my head.
@@ThibautMahringer yep, i never dared to use bluetooth earbuds, always stick to wired. as for speakers, as Alan recommended an emf meter test with different speakers and different BT versions would give some answers.
I have both JBL Charge 5 and Anker motion plus. I love the sound coming from Anker motion plus more. JBl speakers are by no means bad. But I regrett buying JBL speakers because they are expensive. I should not have bought them and invest the money in the stock market for my retirement.
Even me i got both.. for me i prefer charge 5 than motion+.. charge 5 sound’s better, nice bass punch and clear .. sometimes motion plus sound is good bcoz of stereo but no bass punch, very poor bass. Charge 5 sound is pleasurable than motion+
i got myself the charge 5 since i had bestbuy gift card, its my first mono but i do admit it still good am fine with the sound and i wanted solid speaker with water resistent and so far am happy with it.

I hope this doesn't sound too much like a nostalgic question, but im curious if you have had the JBL Charge 2, and if so what would sound similar to that sound profile but lets say 5x louder? I know the new jbl charges are now mono, but i prefer the stereo instead. Would you recommend an upgrade to the Xtreme lineup or maybe even a different speaker altogether ? Comming from a Charge 2 user who more frequently listens to dance music =)

Why are JBL speakers always so bright... Sometimes I feel like it's a matter of out of the box tuning why people think they're better. I wouldn't want that much treble on my XB33's. Speaking of which it's now been 2 years since I got my first one, and I learned something very frustrating. You can't buy replacement parts for Sony speakers. My XB33 I bought in August 2020 needs a new battery and new charge port (I drained it almost every day and kinda abused the port), but Sony can't sell me that 😐
i dont think they are all bright but they certainly try and get the most out of their tweeters and they do like a v shape. i find the charge 5 quite balanced.

Hey Allan. I am enjoying all your videos. But now. It seems 8m stuck with a decision. I am truly confused about. You seem to really enjoy the sound 9f the soundcore motion plus. 8 just bought one. And a Doss soundbox XL. The sound of the Doss just blows away the motion plus. Treble is excellent. But sound is lacking bass definition. And sound is closed off. No openess. After watching so many reviews I don't know why my motion plus doesn't sound as good as everyone says. I'm at version 37.38
If you prefer the doss thats all that counts. I can only give my personal opinion. The motion plus does lack deep bass which is why i prefer the motion boom.
but pound for pound by definition means only one champ. sub $150 would be motion boom. i dont listen to much high end gear (portables) due to cost so cant comment.

@@michaelhopkins5531 Hey, I also got two Motiom Booms. And to be honest I enjoy the Boom more than the Studio 7. Bass is overboosted and it's too much sometimes. But I think for speakers that aren't too expensive, Motion Boom and Studio 7 are the greatest of the bunch! I prefer Onyx Studio 7 if I had to choose between Xtreme 3 and Studio 7. In classic JBL fashion, Xtreme 3 lacks mids. Studio 7 have good mids and highs but they are recessed. Xtreme 3 have a bigger battery but worse sound. And Xtreme 3 have considerably less bass. In my country, you can get one Motion Boom and one Studio 7 for less than one Xtreme 3 so yeah...

How is Ankers quality nowadays? I had soundcore boost and even after getting a replacement it still had that weird sound at highest volume, like distortion , cracking I don't know. Do they last now? Motion+ is around for a while so I imagine people have experiences. My flip 4 battery died after year and a half and it was barely used. Highly disappointed

Funny how long the Motion+ has stood superior in this class. You would expect it to become irrelevant against next generation speakers from competitors.
i think for sound comparisons you shouldn't use a custom eq on one and standard on the other...because that's not the true nature of that product...stock vs stock and custom vs custom...at least a fair comparison to me

@@phrocasso5906 Nope. But he doesn't have to, if a speaker have some EQ possibilities you have to take advantage of it. Even if the others don't have it. Charge 5 and PL7 don't have EQ so it's impossible to compare them custom vs custom against Motion+ / XB33
@@ThibautMahringer he could also use music apps with EQ in them for the other speakers. It's not impossible to compare custom because there's other ways to EQ the others using third party. This back and forth wont get anywhere though.
@@phrocasso5906 EQ in other apps sucks man. It's far for being as precise. The only good one that I know is in Poweramp. And you have to change it each time for each audio gear you use. An embedded EQ is set once and for all. And that's the only EQ that matters and that should be used. If a speaker don't have embedded EQ, it's no use to use third party EQ as it would never be as good as a dedicated EQ in the app that come with your speaker. If you really want it to be fair then both speaker should use crappy third party EQ. But considering soundcore does provide a great EQ there's no reason to do that.
the last song perfect life at the very end of your videos sounds so smooth on motion+ it's even better and more balanced sounding than the original ... you did some freaky processing there ... didn't you ...?
Alan, I need your advice. I need a water resistant speaker. I can get motion+ and motion boom for 80 EUR each. In that price range any other option you'd consider ?

thats pretty much the point of the video 😭😭 it really depends on your usage. for me charge 5 at low volumes, motion plus for higher volumes, xb33 and pl7 can do the job but are not suited to my tastes and i never sue them outside of comparisons.
The fact that the motion plus distorts its either the amp is gonna burn, or the voice coils of thr drivers are gonna overheat... Jbl will never distort no matter what.

I've had the charge 5 for the past 3 weeks and it's held very well. I still am kinda hesitant to get the motion plus again as I like it just as much but after having 2 of them bite the dust back to back, I don't know if it's worth the risk again. I didn't go for the motion boom either for the same reason. They also both lack an ip rating for dust resistance, I work in a VERY dusty factory so idk how much dust would affect them.
@@alanrossreviews Biggest issue is durability and portability. Charge 5 has the boom beat for portability obviously. Idk if the boom can handle a lot of dust and other particles because, as previously stated, my workplace is extremely dusty. Also forgot to mention that the Wal-Marts around here seem to sell JBL stuff for a bit less than msrp so I got my charge 5 for $139 USD instead of the $179 msrp. The boom is $110 on amazon. For sound it seems like from your vids and the others I've watched, the charge takes it for overall clarity and quality under 70% vol. Past that and the boom takes it due to less compression and it being the bigger, louder speaker. Past 70% the charge 5 starts to drop it's bass response quite a bit. I do feel that despite the boom having more low end response, the charge 5 has a faster, punchier bass. I'll stop here before I write a whole essay lmao.

trouble is tastes vary, you might not have been aware of that but one person likes one thing, another person likes another. no such thing as good and bad music as such just different tastes. My father had a degree in music, i'm very well aware of the snobbery that exists in the music world and what they consider good and bad music. it was not against you but I just say you can't judge of the quality of a speaker with this kid of music only. I guess for a good reason that is jazz music or piano or classic music contain moments of silence that are helpfull to hear if the speaker makes moise during these moments of pause (sorry for my english it's not my language) these kind of music contrary to electro pop contain real music instruments with their clear sonority, echos vibrations this is not just boom boom boom. @@chuckmoncton3644 im very happy to debate this much misunderstood topic but you came straight in with strong swear words albeit with Asterix and that is no basis for debate. It suggests you are not open to understanding why certain music is used, rather you seem to already be in the position that you are right and thats the end of it. I understand it wasn’t aimed at me (you say) despite it being my own music choice. Given endless amounts of time, no youtube compression and no copyright issues I would love to keep everyone happy and use a variety of genres to keep everyone happy. In terms of quiet passages well these are Bluetooth speakers and most suffer from Bluetooth hiss to some degree but if it was noticeable I would mention it. Normally you have to hold the speaker to your ear to hear it. I don’t think people with refined tastes shall we say should be looking for a Bluetooth speaker not without a high end codec or wifi at any rate. And to hear the type of music you talk about, classical for instance. You simply cannot get the dynamics required without using a proper hifi setup and all the imaging that comes with it too. Describing my music as electro pop already suggests you don’t have an understanding of electronic music and its multiple genres and you just hear a Boom Boom as you say. Often this means you simply don’t like a loud bass and associates bad music with bass heavy music but again simply taste and in my experience you don’t even like it on real instruments such as bass guitar and bass drums. This is nothing to do with being good or bad music but simply your own preference. I am not catering to tastes as such, im testing speakers. Im seeing how they handle broad spectrum complex frequencies. Enough information for people to decide if its for them or not. Its hard to move on from this silly good music bad music nonsense, again its your taste and actually most people love this type of genre. It is just the niche crowd who consider themselves so called audiophiles that seem to think they know best and what they like is the only good music. Again I understand you are trying to make clear you are not taking aim at me personally though its hard to not take it personal given your open lines, the fact that you are commenting on my videos and making judgements on my choice of music. There is no definition as to what is bad music for a reason other than personal opinion but music itself is defined as “vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.” You talk about real instruments, are you aware of the definition of a real instrument? “an object used for producing musical sounds” There is no such thing as real instruments and not real instruments, if it makes a musical sound its an instrument. What you guys normally mean are traditional instruments while conveniently forgetting most of them require electronic amplification and those that don’t normally when used at a venue will have an electronic mic to relay the sound via speakers. I hope you continue to watch the channel and im happy to debate with you, just please be more careful with your phrasing. One thing I will leave you with is this. You talk about “clear sonority, echos vibrations” Honestly you are kidding yourself if you think you can get any sort of real world judgement on this listening to a compressed RUclips track. Part of this is actually room dependent and my recordings minimise the room influence so you can hear the speaker itself. I hope at the very least you are using decent flattish headphones?

Hey Alan, love your reviews man! Just wondering if you still think the Motion+ is a better buy than the Charge 5 if the C5 is cheaper and also now having its own EQ on the JBL app? I can pick up a C5 for 88£ vs 100£ for the M+ in my area. It would mostly be used around 70% volume in a room and backyard/beach jamming. Your opinion would be very helpful!
soon as you say beach i go charge 5, the form factor is more suited to travels and knocks.

charge 5 probably, m+ brings other things to the table but leaves deep bass behind, charge 5 delivers the bass but with a mono sound.

very detailed and professional review. great job. been testing the Motion Boom for 3 days now, it's growing on me from day to day. I just have one issue as I did with the motion plus - maybe it's my imagination but I sense these new speakers (BT version 5.0) have stronger radiation because their range is 4 times more than version 4.1 (Flip 3 and Charge 3 are fine in that department) and it gives me a headache after a while. I ordered some EMF protection stickers although I'm not sure they will help to reduce the damage but it's worth a try. Anyway, thanks again, Alan.

That's interesting. I actually can't use Bluetooth headphones or earbuds because of headache issues. But for speakers it's fine since they're not directly on my head.

The soundcore is great speaker but the biggest problem is white noise on standby and that why i preffer Sony where is completly silance.

I have both JBL Charge 5 and Anker motion plus. I love the sound coming from Anker motion plus more. JBl speakers are by no means bad. But I regrett buying JBL speakers because they are expensive. I should not have bought them and invest the money in the stock market for my retirement.

Even me i got both.. for me i prefer charge 5 than motion+.. charge 5 sound’s better, nice bass punch and clear .. sometimes motion plus sound is good bcoz of stereo but no bass punch, very poor bass. Charge 5 sound is pleasurable than motion+
i got myself the charge 5 since i had bestbuy gift card, its my first mono but i do admit it still good am fine with the sound and i wanted solid speaker with water resistent and so far am happy with it.

I hope this doesn't sound too much like a nostalgic question, but im curious if you have had the JBL Charge 2, and if so what would sound similar to that sound profile but lets say 5x louder? I know the new jbl charges are now mono, but i prefer the stereo instead. Would you recommend an upgrade to the Xtreme lineup or maybe even a different speaker altogether ? I still have a charge 2+ and love it as its stereo. If i want a bit more bass i put next to a wall and proximity effect does the rest.

Why are JBL speakers always so bright... Sometimes I feel like it's a matter of out of the box tuning why people think they're better. I wouldn't want that much treble on my XB33's.
Speaking of which it's now been 2 years since I got my first one, and I learned something very frustrating. You can't buy replacement parts for Sony speakers. My XB33 I bought in August 2020 needs a new battery and new charge port (I drained it almost every day and kinda abused the port), but Sony can't sell me that 😐
i dont think they are all bright but they certainly try and get the most out of their tweeters and they do like a v shape. i find the charge 5 quite balanced.

Out of all the speakers you've tested what would be a good choice or listening to music outdoors while doing something like washing a car.. or indoors to workout to and for a musician to hook up into a laptop and play along to youtube videos with a amplified guitar
maybe something like the wking t9 for a chill out listen, no heavy bass but sparkly and for background music its pretty nice.
Hey Allan. I am enjoying all your videos. But now. It seems 8m stuck with a decision. I am truly confused about. You seem to really enjoy the sound 9f the soundcore motion plus. 8 just bought one. And a Doss soundbox XL. The sound of the Doss just blows away the motion plus. Treble is excellent. But sound is lacking bass definition. And sound is closed off. No openess. After watching so many reviews I don't know why my motion plus doesn't sound as good as everyone says. I'm at version 37.38
If you prefer the doss thats all that counts. I can only give my personal opinion. The motion plus does lack deep bass which is why i prefer the motion boom.

@@michaelhopkins5531 Hey, I also got two Motiom Booms. And to be honest I enjoy the Boom more than the Studio 7. Bass is overboosted and it's too much sometimes. But I think for speakers that aren't too expensive, Motion Boom and Studio 7 are the greatest of the bunch!
I prefer Onyx Studio 7 if I had to choose between Xtreme 3 and Studio 7. In classic JBL fashion, Xtreme 3 lacks mids. Studio 7 have good mids and highs but they are recessed. Xtreme 3 have a bigger battery but worse sound. And Xtreme 3 have considerably less bass. In my country, you can get one Motion Boom and one Studio 7 for less than one Xtreme 3 so yeah...

How is Ankers quality nowadays? I had soundcore boost and even after getting a replacement it still had that weird sound at highest volume, like distortion , cracking I don't know. Do they last now? Motion+ is around for a while so I imagine people have experiences. My flip 4 battery died after year and a half and it was barely used. Highly disappointed

i think for sound comparisons you shouldn't use a custom eq on one and standard on the other...because that's not the true nature of that product...stock vs stock and custom vs custom...at least a fair comparison to me
When speakers dont have EQ you still have to show the ones that have EQ in their best form

@@phrocasso5906 Nope. But he doesn't have to, if a speaker have some EQ possibilities you have to take advantage of it. Even if the others don't have it. Charge 5 and PL7 don't have EQ so it's impossible to compare them custom vs custom against Motion+ / XB33
@@ThibautMahringer he could also use music apps with EQ in them for the other speakers. It's not impossible to compare custom because there's other ways to EQ the others using third party. This back and forth wont get anywhere though.
@@phrocasso5906 EQ in other apps sucks man. It's far for being as precise. The only good one that I know is in Poweramp. And you have to change it each time for each audio gear you use. An embedded EQ is set once and for all. And that's the only EQ that matters and that should be used.
If a speaker don't have embedded EQ, it's no use to use third party EQ as it would never be as good as a dedicated EQ in the app that come with your speaker.
If you really want it to be fair then both speaker should use crappy third party EQ. But considering soundcore does provide a great EQ there's no reason to do that.

thats pretty much the point of the video 😭😭 it really depends on your usage. for me charge 5 at low volumes, motion plus for higher volumes, xb33 and pl7 can do the job but are not suited to my tastes and i never sue them outside of comparisons.

I've had the charge 5 for the past 3 weeks and it's held very well. I still am kinda hesitant to get the motion plus again as I like it just as much but after having 2 of them bite the dust back to back, I don't know if it's worth the risk again. I didn't go for the motion boom either for the same reason. They also both lack an ip rating for dust resistance, I work in a VERY dusty factory so idk how much dust would affect them.
if you have the charge 5 i would go for the boom not another plus.
@@alanrossreviews Biggest issue is durability and portability. Charge 5 has the boom beat for portability obviously. Idk if the boom can handle a lot of dust and other particles because, as previously stated, my workplace is extremely dusty. Also forgot to mention that the Wal-Marts around here seem to sell JBL stuff for a bit less than msrp so I got my charge 5 for $139 USD instead of the $179 msrp. The boom is $110 on amazon. For sound it seems like from your vids and the others I've watched, the charge takes it for overall clarity and quality under 70% vol. Past that and the boom takes it due to less compression and it being the bigger, louder speaker. Past 70% the charge 5 starts to drop it's bass response quite a bit. I do feel that despite the boom having more low end response, the charge 5 has a faster, punchier bass. I'll stop here before I write a whole essay lmao.

It suggests you are not open to understanding why certain music is used, rather you seem to already be in the position that you are right and thats the end of it. I understand it wasn’t aimed at me (you say) despite it being my own music choice. Given endless amounts of time, no youtube compression and no copyright issues I would love to keep everyone happy and use a variety of genres to keep everyone happy. In terms of quiet passages well these are Bluetooth speakers and most suffer from Bluetooth hiss to some degree but if it was noticeable I would mention it. Normally you have to hold the speaker to your ear to hear it. I don’t think people with refined tastes shall we say should be looking for a Bluetooth speaker not without a high end codec or wifi at any rate. And to hear the type of music you talk about, classical for instance. You simply cannot get the dynamics required without using a proper hifi setup and all the imaging that comes with it too. Describing my music as electro pop already suggests you don’t have an understanding of electronic music and its multiple genres and you just hear a Boom Boom as you say. Often this means you simply don’t like a loud bass and associates bad music with bass heavy music but again simply taste and in my experience you don’t even like it on real instruments such as bass guitar and bass drums. This is nothing to do with being good or bad music but simply your own preference. I am not catering to tastes as such, im testing speakers. Im seeing how they handle broad spectrum complex frequencies. Enough information for people to decide if its for them or not. Its hard to move on from this silly good music bad music nonsense, again its your taste and actually most people love this type of genre. It is just the niche crowd who consider themselves so called audiophiles that seem to think they know best and what they like is the only good music. Again I understand you are trying to make clear you are not taking aim at me personally though its hard to not take it personal given your open lines, the fact that you are commenting on my videos and making judgements on my choice of music. There is no definition as to what is bad music for a reason other than personal opinion but music itself is defined as “vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.” You talk about real instruments, are you aware of the definition of a real instrument? “an object used for producing musical sounds” There is no such thing as real instruments and not real instruments, if it makes a musical sound its an instrument. What you guys normally mean are traditional instruments while conveniently forgetting most of them require electronic amplification and those that don’t normally when used at a venue will have an electronic mic to relay the sound via speakers. I hope you continue to watch the channel and im happy to debate with you, just please be more careful with your phrasing. One thing I will leave you with is this. You talk about “clear sonority, echos vibrations” Honestly you are kidding yourself if you think you can get any sort of real world judgement on this listening to a compressed RUclips track. Part of this is actually room dependent and my recordings minimise the room influence so you can hear the speaker itself. I hope at the very least you are using decent flattish headphones?
Thank you for all your technical comments it absolutly interresting, of course I know about youtube compression but having your advice on the points I mentionned is nice. Depends on the logic and sense of that critique, i have yet to come across a troll who can justify their comment and not have to resort to schoolboy insult slinging. I guess that still hasnt changed. 😁👍
