nice to see someone working stones like I do!! Into the tumbler goes A mix of rough stones along with all my chips and pieces, from cutting. And some pre cut stones that I will let the tumbler grind down saving me some time making cabochons. Pick off the best ones to hand work. Added bonus, now I can see the flaws more easily!!Now back out to the slab saw. Got A real nice stone I picked off the beach this morning, lets slice it and see if it as good as it promises to be!!!! That's the beauty of lapidary, bit of hounding, bit of cutting, bit of letting the machines work with out supervision!! At the end of the day, come up with some real nice stuff.Tony
Wow, I am listening very carefully....... cuz they are Rockhound royalty!!!!! I have seen this video more than once and it never gets old! I hope they will do more videos like this. I love these videos.
Wow Liz, you must be kept very busy at home just making jewellery, polishing, cutting and grinding without making videos, gold prospecting and keeping a tame Wal. I take my hat off to you!
Reading your comment just made me realized that Wal's got me exactly where he wants me to be....LOL It's all good fun and I enjoy every moment. :-) Thanks for watching and Happy Hunting to both of you. May the gold flow and shine ever so brightly. Cheers, Liz
I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotates slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have a 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week. I have been wondering if you could use quartz sand as grit for the first stage to do the rough rounding off? I am posting this on all videos about rock hounding to spread the idea, if this is you channel and you do not like that let me know. The fact that the tumbling will all take place in a rubber tire should help keep the noise down. The rocks should never touch the rim. I have suggested to people that they make a sound proof shed just big enough to be practical so the noise will be minimized. Plus the rubber in a tire is thick and should absorb a lot of the noise. Also you should have a small fan on the motor to keep it cool. A high quality motor will be a must as it will run 24 hours a day. I am no expert but with the proper gearing the motor should not be under too much stress. I would sell the tumbled stones. Once tumbled, you grade them by quality and type. Some would be really valuable. I bet you could average $10 usd per pound with just good found material and more if you have high grade material. Definitely not for the weekend rock hound but if you sell stones or want to, what a cheap way to start. You could tumble other people's rocks for a fee or shares too. You could make one with car tires for a smaller scale operation. There has to be a lot of people with a 30 year in the making, 3 ton pile of rocks out behind their house. With this they could see results from all that collecting.
dear liz..am joe from java indonesia..im a big fan of gemstone..and i really interesting on your video..thank you for sharing the knowledge about gemstone..
Wow! These stones are so beautiful. How do you find them??? I am getting a vibratory tumbler here soon, but I'd love to shape the stones so beautifully like you have done. I hope it works as well as your handmade tumblers. I wish I had seen this video sooner.
+Dana W Hi Dana, In my opinion, you're on to a good start with the vibratory tumbler. If you have a grinder and can preform your rocks before tumbling, vibratory tumbler is best suited for polishing them. If you haven't got a grinder, a rotary tumbler will work best for rounding the rocks first before putting them in the vibratory tumbler for polishing. Thanks for watching and wish you all the very best. Cheers, Liz
i just hand cabochoned this mineral, but i dont know what it is. when i broke the actual stone, it reminded me of Mica. Its colors are different shades of grey, white, and some parts are transparent. there are also small metallic bits inside as well. Do you think you can help me? I can also provide pictures of them as well. :D
I seen the liquid form of tumbling gem stone before. The tumbler you don't used any liquids. Yet the same result bring out the beauty of the stone. But which is better? As always love the vid. Yack

Hi Laura, 4 years ago was the last time I fired up the tumbler when I needed some gemstones to use as border tiles for our bathrooms. This lot I will use for future jewelry making and arts and crafts. Some of these I "might" sell. Seems a lot but once I start making things, these are hardly enough and might have to do another load. Thanks for watching and commenting. Wish you all the very best and good luck with your jewelry making. Cheers, Liz
Hi Karen, Thanks for your concern. We're both doing great. Just been busy with personal matters and prospecting trips. I should be able to have some videos in the next week. ;-) Cheers, Liz
+Jonas Geirsson NO!!!! :-) You can only tumble together stones that have the same hardness. Opal is much softer than the other two and will disappear in the mix. Thanks for watching Jonas and wish you all the best. Cheers, Liz
Love your video. Thanks. The last two tumbles I did with Amethyst they came out looking dull and pitted. I put them in the tumbler with agates and quartz. Not sure what the issue could be, any suggestions?
Hey Liz! I always wonder..you must collect a lot, what do you do with it all? U can't keep it all lol, do u sell them to pay for your travels? Just being nosey :)

There aren’t many small rocks in my tumbler and I don’t know if that’s why but when I ran it the first week I put heaps of plastic pellets in it to fill the gaps. I figured that’s what caused it, now I’ve taken them out and it’s the second day, I’ve just checked it and it’s done it again... so do you have any idea what I’m doing wrong? I’m stumped and wasting my grit 😔

Hi Courtney, I haven't tumbled any soft stone with a moh hardness of 3 but have tumbled Fluorite which is a 4. They were polished but I wasn't happy with the sheen they had and resorted to re-polishing them by hand. Hope this helps. Cheers, Liz

Hi Cindy, Very difficult to identify gemstones just by photo. May I suggest googling up the color of the stones you found and look for similar looking stones and then do a research on the qualities of specific group of stones. Maybe as a starting point, check out "Chalcedony." Good luck! Cheers, Liz

The prehnite is lovely, almost divine!
beautiful work. Really makes me wonder what all my roughs I pulled from a mine in NC would look like if I tumbled and polished.

Both are 7 on the moh scale of hardness. Cheers, Liz

you so very welcome
Liz do you sell them on eBay. As I want to make rings out of different stones?

when did you find rhodonite
this video is cool next time I'm gonna be checking crystals from underground !
i have a natural red garnet . weight 125 lb. Single piece. I want to sell it.
Have you ever tried Aluminum Oxide rather than silica of the same grit? At Harbor Freight, the AO is nearly half the price.
Might have to check that out. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Liz
Being a newbie with very little to compare the two. I have tinkered with it. It is messy were gloves
is that rhodonite Liz?
Love your video. Thanks. The last two tumbles I did with Amethyst they came out looking dull and pitted. I put them in the tumbler with agates and quartz. Not sure what the issue could be, any suggestions?
+1mckendrick That also happened to me in the past. What I did was run it at 600 grit again and then polish. Cheers, Liz
Quartz and agate are both quartz, but they are not the same! Agate is much tougher, and will beat the heck out of amethyst.
Where do you find all these beautiful stones? So amazing!!!
We are in Australia. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Liz
Netherlands is so boring no stones here, I have to buy them, and you guys just pick it up.

What do you wash your rocks with? And do you wash them multiple times?
I just use water, tumbling in between and rinsing a few times to get rid of most of the coarse grit. Cheers, Liz
