Definitely think about fixing the leaks from the roof first. Otherwise, you may end up with recurring mold problems that destroy the hard work you put into the cleaning and renovating of the upstairs! Congratulations on the new home!! So happy for you:)

I was just thinking the same thing. Roof off! And then strip the whole house and check how much moisture has spread and whether it has turned into mold.
Maybe the easiest thing would be to build a small cabin on the plot to live in if possible. Then start renovating the house itself. Any way Good luck with your new home purchase, at least it can't get any worse! 😅
Yes, the black mold is the main worry. And the bird droppings. Those are probably the things I’d want to deal with first (as a public health nurse). The cat is actually good luck and a great friend to keep out birds, mice or other unwanted little critters….
Firstly, congratulations on buying your first home! While it may need a lot of work, the benefit is that you can transform it into a home that's to your liking. I would like to make a few recommendations, though:
Safety...when you tackle the entry area with all of the bird droppings, it's important to wear a filtered mask. Those droppings can contain diseases and are released in the dust that is stirred up when sweeping the floor. Any time you are cleaning up animal droppings, always wear a mask during the process. Also, the wood burning stove looks like it needs work. It needs a barrier to prevent the little ones from getting too close, and it needs fire proofing. The current set up doesn't look very safe.
Water damage: you are correct about water damage on the ceilings. The roof is one of the first projects to do to stop further damage from taking place. As you make repairs, the last thing you need is for new work to be destroyed by water. You want to make the house water tight (think waterproof); this would include ensuring outer doors and windows are sealed and in proper working order.
Outside stairs to the cellar: It looks like you have what's called a root cellar. With two small children, you might want to erect some sort of gate and fencing around the stairs.

Agree with everything you've said for sure. Addressing the water would probably be the first place to start, to keep the new renos safe and because it might reveal mold that needs to be taken care of. Then the fireproofing. And masks amd gloves will definitely be super important while cleaning

Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.

And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.

Be careful of black mold. You will need take special precautions to remove it. You also don’t want to stay in any mold rooms until it is removed. Also watch out for lead paint. (My hubby has experience with renovation and mold removal)

She said it was built in the 80s. Did they still use lead paint there at that point? In the US, lead paint stopped being used in houses in the late 1970s...

Tear this old house down to the ground and build a new one, it will be cheaper and faster than rebuilding the old building. There is too much moisture and mold in the walls of this house, which you will never be able to get rid of. Build a new, not too big, well-insulated house with plenty of daylight. Also think about the fact that one day you too will be old, so think about a house with as few stairs as possible. I also recommend building a large water tank to collect rainwater. Because water will be a rare and expensive commodity in the future.

Yes, it needs work, but it has “good bones” meaning once it’s fixed up it’s going to be a big house with lots of room to grow your family if you choose, and to have a big garden that will help feed you. We bought a 100 year old farmhouse this year. Enjoy making your renovations. They take 5 times longer than you think, but they are very satisfying to complete. Every step you make is an improvement. Also, give yourself a sabbath rest to recover or you will get burnt out from all the needed work....we learned that the hard way.

Takes five times longer and costs three times more than you expect. We bought a house with four apartments in it eight years ago and while 2.5 of the apartments are finished and just fine, we still have a long way to go. I think a reasonable person should expect to pay about $150,000 USD to make a house like this livable. Yes, it will be over time, but it needs a lot of work on the exterior before anyone can sleep there. Bricks are falling out, that means all the mortar needs to be repaired, the roof should be the first thing replaced, then floors and unfortunately, both of those are very expensive. That black stuff on some of the walls is black mold. It will need to be remediated which means removing some of the structure, because the spores will stick around forever.
I would consider doing the exterior repairs, cleaning the place up as much as possible and then selling it to another immigrant couple from Russia so the Terekhinas can buy something that is more manageable. They'll make enough profit on it to take a step up. Anyway, just my opinion, but that is what I would do.
Rents are not as expensive as people think when you factor in all the things you need to do and the money you need to pay to maintain a house in decent condition.

Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. When she pointed at the waterdamage in the bedroom and said "this needs cleaning" I spit my drink out. No girl you probably need to fix your roof! The walls are falling in downstairs as well. As a builder this house needs SO much work not just a bit of cleaning and paint!

I have so enjoyed watching your journey so far and respect you greatly. I know what difficult choices you have made to keep your family safe and that is why I want to tell you this.
Mould is VERY dangerous! I speak from experience, and cannot emphasise this enough.
To keep your family safe, this is what you MUST do:
1) Stay in your current home until these jobs are complete.
2) Get professionals to remove EVERYTHING that has mould on it or is damp: wood, plaster, roofing etc and replaced with new materials
3) Throw away EVERYTHING in the upstairs rooms
4) Make sure there is no mould downstairs too. If so, do the same there.
I know this will be expensive but I also know you will be supported in some way.

You can’t just clean off mold however. It’s not enough. You have to treat it then fix whatever is causing it. Mold is incredibly toxic and is responsible for a host of chronic health issues. Even short term exposure to mold can create long term health issues as mold spores once absorbed via breathing remains in the body. You have to do specific protocols to detox mold from the body.
Great house! It always sadens me a bit, you can tell a family lived there and they loved the place. The way homes fall in disrepair with time always feels a bit sad.....but now the house can be remade an be loved again!
There is a beautiful children's book published in America last year called Farmhouse by Sophie Blackall that is about an old house that a family lived in and then abandoned. This video reminds me of that.
Be aware of the mold and fungus and wear protection for breathing while working on the home. It’s looks like mold. It must all be removed especially with a child.

One tip, be careful to wear a mask or some thing to cover your nose and mouth when you clean out anything that’s heavily moldy or the room with the bird poop. It’s easy to get sick from those things. I can’t wait to see what you do with this house!

Might need to replace the walls and ceiling with the black mold. We had it our house and we all got respiratory illness from it, but once we addressed the leak and removed the gyprock and also had it cleaned, it hasn't come back and we got the all clear by professionals. So if you're doing it yourselves wear masks and gloves and keep the windows and doors open. There's a lot of work to be done, but will be so worth it in the end and just enjoy it along the way.

I remember when I bought my home: it was (still is) old and needed a lot of TLC (Renovations). Bought it low, like you did, fixed what I could on my budget. My home is now worth mor than when I had purchased it, 34 years ago. Still have to fix things here and there but it’s home and that’s what matters. Blessings to you and your family. 😇🥰

The floor is ok most places. You need renovate the walls new cabinets vanities ( ikea ) just keep it simple. Great house!! Ps: remove some interior walls make bigger the space. Kitchen can be together with living room. Looks bigger and spacious..

Islam was the original Religion descended to earth from heaven with Adam and Eve (peace and blessing be upon them) in the beginning of humanity. and was passed to people with the succession of the 124 000 prophets and 315 messengers of God to all nations and civilizations since, passing by Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ismaël, Joseph, Moses, Aaron, Joshua, David, Solomon and Jesus (Peace and blessing be upon them) during the history of mankind, the last replaces and completes the previous, until the succession of the last messenger of God fourteen centuries ago, Muhammad (Peace and blessing be upon him) to complete the noble morals of all mankind, to bring humans and jinns out of darkness into light, and to purify people's religion and belief from corruption and polytheism, and return it to purity and true monotheism, like it was in the times of the prophets (Peace and blessing be upon them).
Many Religions that we know nowadays, at their beginning were true and under Islam, initiated by one of the prophets of God, but their original teachings, history and scriptures have been corrupted over time with falsification and polytheism, or lost and replaced with false ones. That's why Islam is the only Religion accepted by God nowadays, which consists in bearing witness that there is no god besides Allah (God in Aramaic, the original language of Jesus and the Gospel), and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, just like Jesus and Moses and others are His servants and messengers. Never a messenger of God said he was God or literally son of God, it was the people after him who changed the words of God and corrupted the Religion. God is unique and absolute, He does not need to have a family and sons or to associate anyone else with His kingdom, He can simply create whatever He wants, everything belongs to Him, and to Him everything will return. Allah said in Surah Al-Mu’minun : “God has never begotten a son, nor is there any god besides Him. Otherwise, each god would have taken away what it has created, and some of them would have gained supremacy over others. Glory be to God, far beyond what they describe. The Knower of the hidden and the manifest. He is exalted, far above what they associate. (91-92 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah means the one and only God, the God of all prophets and creatures, the creator of the universe and mankind, and the Master of the Day of judgment, where our destiny, Hell or Paradise, is decided based on our faith and deeds in this trial life, and above all, Allah's mercy.
Allah said in Surah Al-Ikhlas : In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Say, “He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is none comparable to Him.” (1-4 / Translated by ITANI).
Allah said in Surah An-Nisa : O FOLLOWERS of the Gospel! Do not overstep the bounds [of truth] in your religious beliefs, and do not say of God anything but the truth. The Christ Jesus, son of Mary, was but God's Apostle - [the fulfilment of] His promise which He had conveyed unto Mary - and a soul created by Him. Believe, then, in God and His apostles, and do not say, "[God is] a trinity". Desist [from this assertion] for your own good. God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son: unto Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on earth; and none is as worthy of trust as God. Never did the Christ feel too proud to be God's servant, nor do the angels who are near unto Him. And those who feel too proud to serve Him and glory in their arrogance [should know that on Judgment Day] He will gather them all unto Himself: (171-172 / Translated by Muhammad Asad).
Allah the Most Merciful said in Surah Ali-Imran : Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is [man's] self-surrender unto Him; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages - behold, God is swift in reckoning!
Thus, [O Prophet,] if they argue with thee, say, "I have surrendered my whole being unto God, and [so have] all who follow me!" - and ask those who have been vouchsafed revelation aforetime, as well as all unlettered people, "Have you [too] surrendered yourselves unto Him?" And if they surrender themselves unto Him, they are on the right path; but if they turn away - behold, thy duty is no more than to deliver the message: for God sees all that is in [the hearts of] His creatures.
Verily, as for those who deny the truth of God's messages, and slay the prophets against all right, and slay people who enjoin equity - announce unto them a grievous chastisement.
It is they whose works shall come to nought both in this world and in the life to come; and they shall have none to succour them.

I surely hope Toyla has a LOT of capentry skills because this place needs to be completely gutted to the bare brick and rebuilt. It can be done but it requires a lot of time - skills and a ton of money.
Seriously. I hope they are not thinking of living there while renovating. Black mold is nothing to joke about and you can't just "wash" it away. I'm trying not to think negatively for them with this, but it is going to take a lot of time and money to make it a healthy renovation and a house safe for a young family.

Looks like you have great bones of the house. Before you start taking apart wall, have a look for black mould. You might have to do something expensive called remediation. Thats when a company comes in, takes down everything to the wooden studs so you have a clear place to put new wiring and drywall up.

I agree with others, fix the roof first and rip off all the surfaces where the black mold has gotten hold of (just washing them well won't do help) and focus on drying those walls well. Then the rest, maybe look for moisture damage on ground/cellar level, but yeah! Needs quite some heavy work up front and good bit of new materials, but it will be great!

This house has a great potential, even though it will take a little bit to renovate it, but at the end the result will be fantastic!. The place is wonderful and the piece of land surroundings the property is amazing. Agatha and Adelina willl enjoy living there but also you and your husband will savor the tranquility and freedom surrounded by splendid nature. You made the right choice.
