Celebrating his show's 11th anniversary and he has no idea how big it's about to get.
TenStarsplus !!!!!! Not only was Mr. Sullivan one of my favorite TV personalities, I think he was the epitome of all telivision hosts!!! He had NO peers!!!! Thank you so much for posting this video!!!! R.I.P. Ed Sullivan, you are truly missed by everyone who has a modicum of intellect!!!!! Fantabulous video!!!!
I remember watching the Ed Sullivan show as a kid in the 1960s. Loved it. As a host, he was always very stoic and serious. But, this WML clip is hysterical. I never knew he had it in himself to be so comedic.
Arlene is stunning!
OMG, I had no idea that Ed Sullivan could be so funny! I used to battle my Dad over the black and white between Ed Sullivan and Bonanza. Dad always won, we had to watch Senor Winsez, jugglers, opera stars, but then came Elvis and then the Beatles. Sullivan was a true showman, he always had the pulse on what his audience wanted.
Ed was a true entertainer, top notch quality as we all know. He looks very dashing here, charismatic. He was one of the best, his show was classy and fun to watch.
RIP Ed.
Sullivan's putting that witty, urbane panel on the floor is just precious!!!
For a show famous for sophistication and posh, this was darned surreal. Thanx.
I watched the Ed Sullivan Show with my parents weekly. I must say, seeing him like this, so fun and so different from the controlled stiffness we saw was WONDERFUL. He won me over when he said of Elvis, 'This is one of the finest young men I have ever met.', when Elvis insisted on singing his Mother's favorite hymn on his show.
Wow! I use to watch this, as a child, with my father. Of all things, this is my favorite WML show ever! And Ed Sullivan is not really known for being an all-out comedian character!
"The Ed Sullivan Show" was one of those rare shows that the whole family could watch. I was born in 1964, but I do remember the show being on in our home on Sunday nights when I was a little girl. Sullivan had the image of being dour and serious, but it was nice to see him do a comedic turn in this clip:)
Ed Sullivan's heart-warming segments with lovable Italian Mouse, Topo Gigio and his obvious love of The Beatles prove Ed Sullivan really had a personae that eclipsed the stiff, befuddled empressario with no neck we remember on Sunday night. But NOTHING prepared me for THIS!
Amazing ! it takes you back in time.
He's really funny! I had no idea, this is a true gem to have :) thanks for uploading this! Ed Sullivan seemed so stiff on his show but this is hilarious!!
this was classically hysterical. thanx for uploading!
Always loved Ed Sullivan and his show. Never knew he had such a great sense of humour! Poor John Daly!🤣
Whoever thought that Ed Sullivan was this funny? And everyone always said he had no talent. [sarc] :-)
One of the best "mystery challenger" sets ever.
Wow, how well I remember those days as a kid in Los Angeles.....I was ten in 1963 and loved What's My Line, The Ed Sullivan Show and all the rest ! Remember Petty Coat Junction ?? Those were special times ! How the world has changed. Sierra Cuban, Miami, Florida
This show should come on TV.
Back in 1964 I watched The Beatles first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. I was maybe two weeks shy of my tenth birthday.
I was about 4 1/2 years old back then & remember watching this.
what was so good about it was that they all did it simply to please and entertain the audience.
Ed had a great smile.
this show was great!
TenStarsplus !!!! Does anyone remember that Arlene Francis was the Fran from Bur Tilstrom's " Kukla, Fran, and Ollie "??!!! That was one of the earliest children's TV shows, and it was one of my favorites!!!! Thank you for posting this fantabulous video!!!!!!
He's so oddly shaped. I love it.
This is the funniest episode of WML I've seen so far....and yes, he does resemble Richard Nixon.
Especially with the mask on. 🤣
Hard to tell what is more funny: 2:38 > Sullivan staring at Daly like he were some sort of oil painting or 2:49 > Kilgallen holding her hands up to her mouth straining to be heard through the hurricanes of laughter. Can't beat live TV.
Eds the man!
Love Ed Sullivan
I am readin a great new book about Mr. Sullivan!!
I too watch this with my parents. I guess I never realized that he was short. I always gathered that he was tall.
this has altered my perception of ed sullivan
R.I.P ED SULLIVAN !!!!!!!!
WOW, he is funny as hell!!
Nixon ftw!!! Thanks for posting,
This is better than the crap seen on American TV today.
Wayne & Shuster, whom Sullivan mentioned as CBS stars, were sort of stars of the network. They were actually a comedy duo from Canada, stars of the CBC. They did appear on Sullivan a number of times though. I just thought I'd clear that up. There are a few of their clips on You Tube, but only a few. Check them out if you're interested.
@egrand1508 You are absolutely correct!! I did that on purpose, and you are the only one who has commented on it, so at least I know there is one person who enjoyed those halcyon days!!! Thank you for the contact my friend!!!!! Have a nice day
John Daly and Ed Sullivan were both in the movie " Bye Bye Birdie".
GOOD LORD! This is the WEIRDEST segment of WML ever! I would've expected that sort of act from Ernie Kovacs, but not Ed Sullivan! Very funny! (How did Arlene ever guess it was him?!?)
oh my mr daly is trying to keep a straight face
Very funny episode about Ed Sullivan
I can never tell Nixon and Sullivan apart.
Poor Dorothy, she died after a show one night, very young
@BigDuckKetterer I'm afraid that's not correct. The Fran of Kukla, Fran, and Ollie was named Fran Allison. That show was based in Chicago, and I don't think she ever worked in New York. Arlene Francis was host of NBC's Home show and did segments for the Today show. She also was in several Broadway plays and an occasional movie.
Funny as hell!
EPIC RAP BATTLES OF HISTORY!!
@Shadow4000000 "Right Here on Our Stage Tonight" Nachman
I didn't realize Sullivan had a sense of humor.
@757killer757 That was Johnny Carson's sidekick Ed McMahon that did that.
I've watched several WML episodes, Dorothy always wipes either her right or left eye when she takes her mask off. Just an observation.
Arlene loooooooked pretty :]
5 stars for that mask :P
it appears Ed let it go with the mask on; as if he was able to be someone else other than who we knew
he should have let them take their blindfolds off
I want that mask!
Wow, he always seemed like such a fuddy dud on his show. What a comic.
Where can I get that mask.
is ed sullivan that screams HHOOOOOOOOOOOOO ?
@BigDuckKetterer That's right guy........STAY CLASSY.
Whos the rubber mask supposed to be of?
Not really. That was a common mask at the time and I believe its title was "Caveman".
Caveman by topstone masks
What's the mask of?
a jew
the host looks like kevin spacey
Poor John Daly. He looks miffed when he isn't stifling gawfaws or straining to keep a straight face.
Ed was a bit of a jerk, once threatening Jerome Robbins on the basis of his homosexuality.
@ragemanchoo82 a caveman
Caveman by topstone masks
TenStarsplus !!!!!!! I loved that mask, I wonder if Barack Obama was the model for the mask, and if he's lieing about his age!!!!!! I wish we still had TV shows, with the host being of the same calibre as Ed Sullivan !!!!! That mask sure does look like Barack Obama!!!!
I agree on the mask and Obama. Did you say Ovomit? Seriously, one day my 4 year olds asked why his name is Ovomit! Well, if the shoe fits...
