My thoughts as well! The extra animations are really well done and (almost) perfectly capture the originals' look, yet still feel super odd... Guess it's a matter of growing up playing the original and the jerkier animations being ingrained in one's brain as _the_ way those guns just are. ...but what's with the shotgun's firing animation? The added frames make the muzzle flash act weird. Instead of being, you know, a flash, it appears quick but goes away way too slowly, as if being sucked in back to the barrel.
I actually don't even like playing with an uncapped frame rate for similar timing reasons. I played it on DOS & PS1 so many times, it feels like I'm "swimming" through the levels at higher FPS.

Oh god it's like watching a fever dream of my summer of '94 all over again. Sandy Petersen designed some less than stellar levels, but seemed like a pretty cool guy overall. I mean, how many devout mormons do you know who intentionally designed games where you murder entire scores of hell's minions and considers it an innately pro-christian game because of it? That's somehow both spiritual and metal all at once.
Sandy Petersen tried to create eldritch, Lovecraft inspired scenarios (he's a big fan of Lovecraft's work) using the available tools he had at the time. Of course, the results are quite hit or miss. He had his chance to shine in Quake, where he made almost all maps from episode 4.

Maybe she was needed as an aid in questioning or was taken too just for being one of Uncle Frank's family? Civvie mentioned in his Postal 1 video that she's his sister, right before she pulls a sentence mixing prank on him.
@Toprak Von Cologne I remember his Hatred video came first but I thought he meant that Katie was his sister and he was the one who spoke about her (in videos where she's mentioned including the Hatred one). If Katie isn't his sister, then who is, and who is Katie herself?
11:30 the ending of this level is meant to be a joke as you've noted, it's likely the hardest level in DOOM 1 and most people will be near death at the end of it. To walk thru that final door only to be met with 3 colored key doors was meant to be a WTF moment. Only when you open the first door, that has the key right behind it to the second door, then the key behind that one to the next, etc was meant to be a joke to mess with the player. I played DOOM on the GBA a couple months ago on RUclips/Twitch and this is the final level in that port. It was the first time I'd beat doom past the first few levels, and I was absolutely screaming when I opened that door to see 3 more colored key doors. Doom enemy sounds were mostly based on animal sound effects (per Masters of Doom and some Romero interviews), so let's play a game called Guess That Animal. For example the death sound of the Cacodemon is a turkey.

Looking back now, he wasn't very skilled (I remember he used mouse2 to move forward, lol), but ofc I couldn't tell that. All I knew was that the games seemed really scary to me as an 8 to 10 year old (somewhere around there) and so experiencing them as a spectator was convenient. Map 07, a pillar is a complete different texture from the other 3 pillars Map 08, poop water in the "3 portals" room is actually supposed to be red. There is a red liquid texture left over in the wall, the wall opposite of the secret wall in the pit. Lastly is one map in particular exemplifying odd design choice: Map 18, and that damn yellow skull key hidden in the corner of the courtyard and not in any of the mainline structures. Man the extra frames in the smooth weapons is just strangely looking
MosoKaiser I only use smooth doom now because it just doesn’t look right without it
It's very jarring to just be looking at but once you get used to it and it's not that bad, I don't know which I prefer
It's kinda weird yeah... I like the original
I actually don't even like playing with an uncapped frame rate for similar timing reasons. I played it on DOS & PS1 so many times, it feels like I'm "swimming" through the levels at higher FPS.

Another Fun Fact: Keen Dreams was just re-released on Nintendo Switch for some reason. From what I understand, Softdisk games are constantly juggling between companies so unfortunately it's unrelated to Tom Hall's own efforts

-The "ka-WOOSH!" sound when the Icon of Sin fires out a monster spawn box. This is constantly used as a fireball/explosion sound for movies.

That one line from Joshua Graham in Fallout New Vegas comes to mind.
"We can't expect god to do all the work."
He made some weaker maps, but he also made some of the best levels of Doom and Doom 2.
Don't forget he also created the Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG.
"I'm okay with the demons. They're the bad guys after all"
Sandy Petersen tried to create eldritch, Lovecraft inspired scenarios (he's a big fan of Lovecraft's work) using the available tools he had at the time. Of course, the results are quite hit or miss. He had his chance to shine in Quake, where he made almost all maps from episode 4.
Everybody wants to know more about Civvie 11 and his backstory, meanwhile I'm just sitting here thinking what the hell did Katie do to end up in the dungeon.
@Toprak Von Cologne That's how Civvie's sister fits in? Yikes forever!

They pulled this off really well, because I was happy and laughing when I found out it was just a joke!
The level also telegraphs how you easily beat it. Each room has deco corpses of the other demons implying that you run over to the door wake up all the Barrons and Cacos and get them to infight then kill the demons who survived

My favorite thing in this video was the tidbits on the levels and the development team. I didn't know about that Tom Hall replacement bit.
Though, if you think Ultimate DOOM has "RAW" elements, then let me tell you about DOOM II.
Enemies stuck in place or walls:
Map 02 sarge by barrel
map 17 Spectre behind door among other spectres (he's the 2nd spectre starting left, closest to bars)
Wrong textures or design:
Map 05, the waste tunnel originally had a sidewalk to avoid the water, but it was moved to the ceiling. Try switching it to the floor in
GZDOOM Builder, and you'll see what I mean.
Map 07, a pillar is a complete different texture from the other 3 pillars
Map 08, poop water in the "3 portals" room is actually supposed to be red. There is a red liquid texture left over in the wall, the wall opposite of the secret wall in the pit.
Lastly is one map in particular exemplifying odd design choice:
Map 18, and that damn yellow skull key hidden in the corner of the courtyard and not in any of the mainline structures.
When you love a game this much, you start noticing the small things.
"we didn't know how to circle strafe yet" I mean it was also literally impossible with the default controls at the time
You what, I distinctly remember having the buttons < and > bound to strafe left and right by default in Doom1. I never used them because I was an idiot but the option was there.
Not *completely* impossible... With enough determination you could learn to use DoomGuy's momentum alongside complex patterns of Left/Right with and without the Alt key.
I used to start Doom II with -nomonsters and IDCLEV to Dead Simple, then charge around for hours practising keyboard-only manoeuvres so I could beat my friend on dial-up deathmatch.
I guess it was *almost* a circle-strafe. Alongside my weird three-point turn which at the time I was convinced made me do a faster 180.
IDK why I didn't just learn to play with mouse. :-P
I'm too used to the < and > strafe controls at this point. (I beat the entire game no deaths, UV, all secret levels, no saves with those controls)
You could configure the controls even in vanilla doom 1

Yeah, it's a default setting because Graf Zahl has no taste.
I recommend Texture filtering set to "None (trilinear)", it keeps the sharpness of the textures without making them a pixel mess at long distances.
Also use high quality resize mode "XBRZ", its really good, makes the sprites look more detailed without making them deformed.

I have to disagree with you. Halls of the Damned and Mount Erebus are two of my favourite levels because of how non-linear they are.
I also like Halls of the damned, not so with Erebus though.
Mt Erebus is a great level as it's full of lava, with some RAD suits and invincibility spheres for wading in it safely, and the secret exit is not only the first rocket jump, it paved the way for the Gherrit White terminal grenade climb in Marathon.
