Thank you I used a long stick to press on the gas compartment button inside the car while with a screwdriver on my other hand open the door. My clip felt out of the compartment while getting fuel and I didn’t know what hat happened. But that clip is a good idea too. I’ll find out if the local auto parts has a new clip.

I know mine's stuck right now, and I'm out there with a rubber spatula trying to dig it open and I'm by myself I'm on my way to the gas station cuz I'm almost out of gas.
excellent idea ~ please don't be so shy as to avoid shining some strong light in revealing how you position, then slide or slip the little clip into the appropriate spot on the inside of the door lid ~
There is supposed to be a gas cover cap (see 2:00) that is supposed to cover the opening and prevent debris, dirt and water from getting into the tank. So normally it shouldn't be a problem as long as the gas cover cap is present.

Or for about $5 at most auto part stores you can get a replacement clip that actually fits and works.

To open the stuck fuel door, while pulling the lever inside of the car I used a rake with a long handle to pry the door open.

Toledo, You don't show how to open the cover then replace binder clip. First step is more important than when you have gas cover not opened.
