    Hard to believe that many of those teenagers at the beginning are old enough to have teenagers themselves now; great memories.

      Including me!
      I went to a concert when i was 16 and embarrassing yelled out at the top of my voice "I love you Michael" right before he sung friends and it was dead quiet and he waved to me! lol!
      I'm 47 now and still love his music!
      The older stuff more than the worshippy style stuff!

    I was 20 when this came out... to hear it again put the good chills in my body.. such an awesome talent... Thank God for him. Now he leads millions into worship and Gods presence. The maturity of his true purpose.

    It's just a play on words. He's quoting a line from an 1851 editorial from the Terre Haute Express: "Go west, young man, and grow up with the country." It was encouraging young strong men to venture into the untamed American west of the 19th century.
    I don't listen to much Christian rock, but I like Michael W. Smith a lot. He's just a really good writer. And the fact that he writes spiritual lyrics is icing on the cake.

    This was my favorite song growing up. I grew up in Nevada, I remember asking my mom, "Aren't I already in the west? and is this only a man?" I was 10 or somewhere around that age lol. Anyway, when I realized the full meaning of this song, I loved it. He was and is still my favorite singer.

    I saw him in Wilmore Kentucky at a huge retreat. I can.t remember the name of the festival anymore. We took 25 kids. They had a blast, but I think I had just as much fun. Other great Christian Bands. I have not thought about that sadly in a long time.

    There is a Biblical phrase: "As far as the east is from the west, he has removed our sins from us". There is also a famous phrase in American history, "Go west, young man, and grow up with the country". It's merely poetic license that enables Michael W. Smith to say "Evil go east" in this song.

    I certainly agree with the last poster - he is a very good-looking guy! Such charmisma! I don't like this song (too pop-sounding- but I guess that was typical for this time period - 1993). Glad to say he's retained his good-looks and appeal. The idol of the '80s and '90 christian bobby-soxers. Also a good family man - good morals and standards. God Bless Michael and his good work!

    Evangelical kids in the 90s all look the same. I was one. We looked like zombies in a trance. Everything that the 90s was trying to destroy - all that 80s stuff that convinced people things would be perfect if we just gave all the money to the richest people, because of course, they know how to best spend that money. Relying on God for everything all the time is unhealthy for anyone. God's probably up there going, "Me again? You can't do this yourself? You really don't understand what this whole thing is about, do you?" We missed the boat big time.

    • @KobolsHarper
      @KobolsHarper 2 года назад

      I just got done with a job at an Evangelical org... the kids haven't changed at all haha. I felt so bad for most of them. Also reminded me of being a brainwashed teenager. Bad vibes all around. Nothing wrong with believing God or even being Christian. Evangelicals and fundamentalists are just too extreme and doing themselves and future generations a disservice.

    It was popular opinion at that time to view the area now known as the (American) West as a vast wasteland that nobody in his right mind would want to live in. When Horace Greeley said "Go West, young man", he was thinking more of Illinois than Texas.

  • @mrm64
    @mrm64 12 лет назад

    VEERY true. It wasnt untill 1995 when you could really hear a change in the sound of music. Like take drums for example. Drum sounds became less echoing in the late 90's and today. And synthes changed too.

    Funny thing, I see now that biblically, Christians really *don't* have a place in this world. Our home is not here. I feel that all the more, as the world gets worse. Still love MWS's music, but see how much has changed, and our perspectives change too. Of course the Bible was right all along, even when times were simpler and easier.

    While he probably based this on his own interpretation of scripture (and it's a good song), the phrase "Go West, young man!" was first used in the 19th century by American expansionists to justify "Manifest Destiny" - the idea that it was America's divine right to take control of the West.

    Talk about mixed feeling. The faith aspect aside, geez do I feel old (27), was this music really popular or just a guilty pleasure like it is for me now? and on a positive note, it's these video clips that make my childhood in hindsight seem half as bad as I thought it was. There's something about the soundtrack to a person's life....

    I appreciate the music, but I have to admit, Christian artists have usually been behind secular artists in terms of current music. Sixpence and DC Talk are exceptions as being way ahead of their time. I still appreciate MWS's music, but it's not current for its time. Like most praise and worship music.

    Catchy? What is this, pop music? Well anyway... I like some of Smitty's stuff, don't get me wrong. But I believe "christian" music is limited by the very virtue of it being christian. God gave us an entire world to sing about, and although sometime christians do, maybe we don't do it often enough. We feel the need to sing about Christ. Christ is good to sing about, but he did what he did, for us, so we could enjoy life here too, and sing about everything. Not limited to marital sex. Sex is good.
