How To Use LMMS - Tutorial For Beginners (FREE DAW)

- Learn how to use LMMS, a free DAW. This LMMS tutorial for beginners will teach you the basics of the digital audio workstation. I go over the layout including the playlist/song-editor, piano roll, and mixer/fx-mixer, as well as what most things do. I also talk about setting up the DAW briefly as it is really simple and easy to use music production software. But what I do talk about is how to import your VST plugins, and get your samples and loops in the software too. Many people have said that LMMS is the closest you can get to FL Studio for free. You'll notice the two are close comparisons.
Previously called Linux Multi-Media Studio, this digital audio workstation was made free by an open-source team of developers, meaning anyone can contribute to this DAW, even you! It is available for Linux, Windows, and Mac so if you want to download LMMS for free, check it out here: lmms.io

Hey everyone! All the information you may need is in the description (timestamps, computer specs, plugin support, etc.) One thing I will add is that you can not record live audio in this DAW but could easily use something like Audacity to compliment this DAW if you do vocals or play an instrument. Thanks for watching, let me know you stopped by and say hello! 😉

Free and easy to use. This tutorial was 15 minutes long but completely taught me how to use LMMS. Thank you!
Nice, I'm glad it was an all-in-one solution for you and that it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
What I think they should add in next version of LMMS:
1. Ghost notes
2. Audio recording and editing
3. Drag and drop a sound from desktop to Beatmaker
4. Grouping system like in Soundbridge
Yeah, those are some nice features they could add for sure. Is LMMS your main DAW?
You'll be happy to know that ghost notes are already implemented in master branch. In addition, sample tracks can be sent to mixer channels, and samples can be dragged from the sidebar into a sample track. There's open PRs for audio recording and slicing samples (knife tool), too.
@@TransverseAudio Well My main are soundbridge and Cakewalk. I do use LMMS cause the softwares
Piano roll has nice features like chords
How do you send sample track to mixer channels? I had no ability to do so.
@@TransverseAudio These features aren't in any officially released version at time of writing. However, they're developed and some of them are approved to be in a future version (these are the ones that are "in master branch"). Sorry for any confusion, I should have been clearer!
LMMS is so under rated... especially for chiptune.
It's a good one but I think it gets a lot of the credit it deserves. At first I didn't give it enough credit but it has made a lot of progress.
I prefer OpenMPT for chiptune.
Than you should tell a better one for chip tune
Agreed. It’s great for pixelated games, Undertale fangames, Earthbound-related games.. And if you’re skilled enough in music, unlike me, a real game with no pixels! No pixel-sounding sounds, blah blah... Best free DAW ever, though.
Can you use VOPM and C700 on it?
Yooo wtf this actually looks really good, i remember when Lmms looked like trash
It definitely looked like Windows 98 in the previous versions. I really like the new look too!
yes i quit lmms for that and bought fl studio, now i regret cuz it prety musch same now bruh
Anime Lesson learned! I learned the same lesson after dismissing Caustic on iOS because of how it looks. Could have been dropping some ill bars instead.
On me I used to use it and it looked so iffy
Old theme is superior. New look is all black and white, I cannot distinguish anything.
A few things I feel are worth mentioning as I watch:
If you place your samples in [LMMS Working Directory]/samples, they'll show up in the samples tab in the sidebar. The working directory can be configured in the preferences menu.
(You might even be able to symlink to your existing sample folders inside the directory, I don't recall if this works or not.)
In addition, you can place automations of different types on the same track, should you feel like it, or connect several controls to the same clip.
An unintuitive but useful song editor feature is that if you start dragging a clip and *then* hit ctrl, you can fine adjust the position.
The controller rack lists not only LFOs but also peak controllers, when they're added (via an instrument/sample track/mixer channel's effect chain).
All in all though, this is a well researched video! You bring up a lot of less obvious features that other tutorials miss :)
Very interesting, thank you for mentioning these additional features, although I think I did mention double clicking on the piano roll. I wasn't even thinking about mentioning moving your own samples into the working directory either, that's actually what I do in my main DAW. It's cool to know there is more to this program than I thought.
@@TransverseAudio on second listen, yes you did! Wasn't paying enough attention, oops. Replaced that tip with another one for good measure (no pun intended)
@@spekularr Nice tip to replace it with!

Wow. That’s a mind blowing service :)
Yeah, I really like the DAW too! Thanks for watching and for being on the notification squad!
Thanks, this is a good UI intro to LMMS. However, as basically a "day 1 noob" who is unable to appreciate what most of these features are, or how/when to use them, I still am left like a deer in headlights. Do you have any suggestions for getting started, with the basic concepts, when they are useful, and how they work together? I'd be interested in a hand-holding through the creation of a short piece, starting from a new empty project, explaining the how/why of each step that is done until it's "finished", without assuming the watcher knows anything about it. The way these things are used in real workflow, and to see a peek at the thought process behind it, would be invaluable. Thanks!
I think you want a general music creation tutorial, you can find those anywhere and apply them to LMMS with the help of this video, because it just shows you how to use this particular set of tools. Making music or any art is more about what you do with those tools, high level concepts.
@@Domarius64 A lot has happened in the last 4 months and I've learned what everything he talks about is, but in the Ableton Live 11 context. At least I know what automation, panning, VST, LFO, and all those kinds of things actually means now, and after re-watching this video (to see how far I've come) it is all pretty clear to me. It was not so much about music theory I lacked, but about "defining" terms used in the context of a DAW, especially since it says "for beginners" but doesn't say "people with experience but who are new to LMMS." Anyway, I still found this video valuable as one of the first I DAW-related videos I've seen, because it gave me a list of thing about which to find out more!
@chriss9611 ahh I see :) yes I wouldn't have got that from your message, but that's understandable because you don't know what you don't know. Glad you're making progress.
Nice video man, clear and concise explanation! Thanks a lot!
I am completely overwhelmed! I think I have to watch this several times!
I made it so you can pause then implement, pause then implement, etc. Try playing it back at 0.85 speed or something like that. It may help!
I'm totally new to music production and I wanted to make music about the 5 stages of grief. Do I need any real instruments for LMMS or can I do everything from scratch in it? I'd really appreciate any help or advice, thanks!
EDIT: Seeing the massive amount of support you give to the comments warms my heart. Thank you so much for being so supportive :)
Hey, thanks for asking! I think you will be better off getting realistic plugins for that, depending on the style you are aiming for. The stock plugins that come with LMMS are more geared towards retro and Chiptune. Here is a playlist I made for a bunch of free ones, including realistic instruments: ruclips.net/p/PL6faDNDX-aTJ5wENxQzyi_nvyqSDGVHF_

Thank you and yes, I think you could. Just look at the demo tracks, some of them are really good! Depending on the genre of the game, you may need to get 3rd-party plugins like orchestral samplers or something as this DAW has good chiptune and retro sounds that come with it.

Here is my suggestion to the developers of LMMS:
1) Add the ability to drive an external MIDI enabled instrument.
2) Add a SMPTE OUT, and a SIMPTE IN that will track an external SMPTE source.
This would move LMMS into the world of real production.
ANY sequencer program must be able to drive and be driven externally.
Jim
Good suggestions! Hardware support is important for some.
I never used a music program before. Is it hard to use? I want to make music and sound effects for my game with LMMS, but I never worked with music and sound before.
When I firsf started, I found it a little bit confusing past the piano roll, sequencer, and volume sliders in the mixer. However, in the beginning, that's all you really need to know to practice. Once I got past the hurdle of learning how to use an EQ and other basic effects, it made it a lot easier to write music.

Export audio. Try google next time.
On the toolbar there is an option "Export current project", just click that or go to the File menu on the top where you can export the project, tracks, or MIDI.
@@TransverseAudio Okay then,,how can I split a audio track in lmms??☺️
@@arinjoyroy4287 It does it automatically. Unless you mean cut it inside the playlist - which you, unfortunately, can not do. But, you can create an automation clip for the volume and make a hard switch from 0 to 100% right where you want the sample to start, and then you can just slide the ending to where you want it to end.

As soon as I hear that you can't record audio into this DAW I just say: WTF..who put all that effort for only recording precanned sounds and midi stuff.!!!..This one will be considered a real challenger when the creators add the functionality of recording audio.
I think there are a few genres that don't need live recording. Chiptune, EDM, video game music. All of these are the demographics of this DAW I would imagine.
Yeah, that's indeed a bit... odd.
