It has been 25 years since Performa took over management of Beale Street. We talk to Mike Glenn, owner and general manager of the New Daisy Theatre in Memphis.
Brake St was a place in it young days by the Stroud I've hard and whatvive read. But I honor Memphis for helping Brake St to come come alive. There so much history Dr own those streets and they almost tell the story themeself. But no matter Brake St will song with a lot of soul and blues forever. @jcmanasco Well said, but i alluded to your statement, "....and this is where the music started". If history serves me correct, music of this genre (jazz from New Orleans) was a precursor to the blues and all others after (not taking anything away from Memphis). Incidently while we're on the Memphis subject, i submitted some historic photos to the Concordia Sentinel newspaper in Ferriday where Jerry Lee Lewis is from. You can read the article (google) and see my name Included (Gerald Williams).
I can't believe this video focuses on the owner of the New Daisy. That guy has to be one the biggest jerks I've ever met. His establishment in a dump, even though he charges a $1 "restoration fee" for every ticket sold. Where is that money going? Nothing is being restored, that place goes downhill by the day.
@jcmanasco For some reason which escapes me, you give a lot of credence to Memphis, Tn. as if Detroit, Philadelphia, West Coast sound, New Orleans Dixieland jazz and other music from that region (Cajun, Zydeco etc.), Bluegrass and other styles to numerous to mention are secondary for lack of a better term! I'm not putting down the Memphis sound because i LOVE music from there ( Watt-Stax for example). Booker T.and the M G's is my favorite. I enjoy ALL of the music from Memphis.
@9thWardctc28, 'Nuff said.....In fact, Bourbon St. was Popular (Nationally and Internationally) before Beale St. in Memphis was revitalized many years ago. New Orleans and the French Quarter has always had a "history" musically and otherwise since the beginning of the Louisiana purchase, this is why i can't understand jcmanasco's " this is where the music started" statement! Everybody has their own opinion, but facts are facts, research music history FIRST!

visited memphis , from england in 2004, gotta say beale street was one of the best parts of our tour.

I hate to tell you all but the blues started in west Memphis no Beale St. In 1940s and 50s
basically Fed Ex built Beale Street. Elvis also. Blues for Memphis, Jazz for New Orleans.
