DO NOT look up anything about this series. It is amazing but there are so many wonderful moments I do not want to be spoiled for you. Great reaction, hope to see more.
Remember that Eleanor is a bad person and they’ll be using her awfulness for lots of jokes. The joke isn’t that Chidi’s name is hard; the joke is at the expense of people who are too awful to bother to say it correctly, like Eleanor. Like having her defraud the elderly, her inability to say his name because she’s clearly never put in any effort before is meant to make us laugh at how exaggeratedly terrible she is. Or that’s how I always took it, anyway. :)
Right I’m glad they made it a joke because it’s just as you say, it’s doing the opposite of normalizing it by mocking his name and suggesting all white people can’t pronounce it. She’s drunk ofc but as we see she can’t remember anything about him. It’s directly criticizing it because it is easy to say and then she just says Ariana Grande lol.
Lmfaoooo 4:00 “stiff a waitress” means you don’t tip on your sit-down food order. It’s “bad” bc americas waitstaff only make $2.75 and the rest (all) of your income comes from tips, since the paychech (for hours worked) usually goes to back to the govt 😢
i don’t think elenor getting chidi’s last name wrong is necessarily perpetuating the idea that non-white names are hard but rather to highlight her selfishness. it’s like how sokka’s sexism (in avatar) is not written to support his ideas but rather to condemn it
I adore the premise of the show, make the protagonist a jerk but show that maybe, just maybe, she's got potential. Kristen Bell plays it very well. Also, given that this show's been over for three years, it's becoming quite challenging to avoid spoilers, so be careful out there!
This reaction is so unique wth. so funny. good interest. constantly questioning. fast hot takes. Very entertaining. Editing is on point. I can't think of another reaction channel like it. looking forward to more.
Oh, don't worry. The writers of the show had all the same thoughts you did and explored them. You're gonna enjoy this. AVOID ALL SPOILERS. I promise you this show is worth not being spoiled
0:12 - "Where am I? Who are you? And what's going on?" Yep, that's me on a daily basis. I feel ya, Eleanor. I laughed so hard at you pausing to read all of them - I did the same thing and walked up to the TV to see them all better. I sort of love how the audience is almost on Eleanor's side and then she does something that just sort of kicks the legs out from under that thought…like the littering.
New to the channel and immediately subscribed when I saw you reacting to episode 1 of The Good Place, one of my favorite shows ever. I then found your reaction to be fun and intelligent, two things that I find this show to always be. Then I saw that you are also currently reacting to Buffy, another of my favorite shows, which I'm off to watch now.
Very happy to see this show on the channel! It gets suprisingly deep and philosothical despite its wacky sense of humor. It's really a perfect fit for your style of analysis while providing a nice balance to the upload schedule due to the show's lighter tone in comparison to say Better Call Saul.
HUGE SPOILER: ... ...Tyler if you're reading this, FOR SHAME! Do not read spoilers! 😂 At any rate, my "spoiler" is that i followed for Buffy, stayed for Hill House, and I'm all in for Good Place! 🙌🙌🙌 Let's GOOOOOO!
yay, so happy to see this today! It's a really good show. For me it started out "eh this is kinda funny I guess" but it ended up being very unique, creative, and surprisingly deep and meaningful. People gush over it for a reason, and you'll soon see why.
"stiff a waitress" 3:55 I'm scared what you think this means 😂 i assume it's not a thing british peopoe say but "stiff" in this context is to not pay someone what they're owed. so in the context of a waitress and America? it probably means not tipping.
You pausing to read all the text hooked me. It's rare to have a reactor who is willing to pause, and even less so will do it to catch details like that. And since I'm the kind of person who wants to catch everything, it's refreshing and exciting to see someone who will do that.
6:53 OMG I know exactly what you're talking about!! I have never had my choices be so harshly judged, or have been made to so regularly defend them against aggressive arguments, than when I was vegetarian/vegan. People blame veggies for constantly pushing their lifestyle on others when it is absolutely the other way around!
6:57 Same! The only time I would bring it up unprompted is if I’m making plans to get food with new people, or like I’m at someone’s house and I want to know what (if anything) I can eat. I mean, I was definitely worse about it when I first went vegan over four years ago, because the horrors of factory farming were still fresh in my mind, but even then I wouldn’t just bring it up out of nowhere, and I wouldn’t get specific about those horrors when people asked why I went vegan.
I love your videos and the way u analyse these shows, and even tho I love The Good Place, imma keep asking for hill house videos, please don't abandone that series
Don't worry about the name issue. It is a long running joke in the show, and it pays off in such a subtle, brilliant way in the last season. Please just enjoy it.
I wasn't worrying about it but now I am 😂 I'll see how it goes but it being a long running joke makes it worse. No shade on you but if the payoff is that she gets it right eventually that's not a payoff (don't tell me either way lol). It didn't spoil my enjoyment of the show, just a comment as it happened.
You're not even wrong lol. I didn't know this was a show that would be an 'AVOID SPOILERS' show and now I'm like....sooooo the status quo of the Good Place is getting rocked at some point 👀 just a theory at this point, no one reply to this comment 😂
7:30 Also same! Being a vegan with arachnophobia is a challenge. I have been getting better about putting spiders outside, but I wouldn’t say I’m careful about it. I’m at the stage where I’ll take the largest cup I can find, scoop the spider into it, then rush to the door and throw the cup outside. I’ll go back later and thoroughly check it over before bringing the cup back inside. I’m fine with insects though. The only bugs I’ll kill are mosquitoes and ticks, because they can spread deadly diseases.
I would definitely lose a lot of points for talking about veganism unprompted 😂 This show does a great job of raising interesting questions about what it means to be a 'good' person. It's also hilarious. Enjoy the ride!
This show is very much rooted in philosophy and is a common theme throughout the whole show. Already pushing that in the first episode but they really do a good job of bringing up ethical dilemmas and also various philosophical perspectives. Obviously you're just starting the show, but the creator of the show wrote a book about the philosophy behind the show and does it in a very fun an relatable way so it seems like that'd be something you'd enjoy after finishing the show of course
People say this show is "kinda good".... "kinda good"? Is lava "kinda warm"? Is liquid nitrogen "kinda chilly"? ;) Also, flamingos aside, maybe you should wear bow ties for this show, it's fitting and let's be honest: Bow ties are cool! :)
I bumped into your channel looking for a reaction for TGP and right off the bat you mention veganism... I subscribed! Been vegan for 4 years now, I see potential in everyone trying to do good, few people are inherently bad, most of us want the world to be a better and kinder place :)
Ohh, I am so happy that you are reacting to this show, Tyler! I watched it like 5x in the earlier part of the pandemic. Really appreciating your insights so far. They did play off Eleanor not being able to say Chidi's name as a joke, but also an example of her being a jerk. It feels so cringey to me that all of these grand acts like saving children in a burning building etc. are deemed as the highest scores. People can do those things in their day jobs but go home and treat their family like garbage. And like you said, not everyone has the means to travel abroad and study environmental law etc. Someone can be homeless but if they try to cheer other people up, that should be HUGE points. This show comes across as a bit centrist to me, and I think it is an artifact of its time as well. In 10-15 years, this show will seem dated in some ways, and definitely has more of an American and Western view of the world, BUT I find it really thought provoking and they did study a lot of philosophy for the show. Can't wait for ur next reaction & I hope you are well
Possible spoilers ahead, not explicitly stated but you might be able to draw some conclusions I agree with everything you’re saying here but that’s the whole theme of the show, the system IS flawed. It very explicitly seems to favor the rich. It’s an awful system and fixing it is pretty much the entire show’s plot. I don’t really agree with the idea that it’ll age poorly because the show is a critique of all that stuff. It seems that if you do anything bad, even inadvertently, you get sent to the bad place. That’s not good and they fix it by the end.
@@custardoftheeggvariety2062 I saw the whole show so no need for a spoiler warning (Tyler hasn’t seen it yet) but I still feel like certain things in the show are a tad cringey and will be frowned down upon as more time passes. Shows that overall have a pretty good message but still be centrist bc it is safer and more profitable. It’s not about the main message but about details and how the show does it. All of the POC are side characters for example. It’s great that they are there but definitely has a “we are good liberals” feel to it vs a more progressive feel, but that’s pretty common.
@@custardoftheeggvariety2062 some more examples, we learn that Eleanor is bisexual but it’s used to make the show seem more progressive. She had crushes on women before but never anything serious. All of her serious romantic feelings have been towards men. It’s the shows way of saying “we support queer ppl. See? The main character is even bi!!” But in the show itself she is basically a straight person who occasionally finds women physically attractive. That’s selling out. They could of given her ONE past crush/relationship who she was more serious about and was a women. Also, there are A LOT of dick jokes in this show. It’s really showing how much our society worships dick and sees it as the only true genital. I can go on lol. I’m not saying any of this makes the show bad. It is still really brilliant and interesting and I really enjoyed it but I think Tyler was right that not only was the joke about Chidi’s name meant to showcase Eleanor being a jerk BUT the audience was also expected to find it silly/cute. That’s just messed up.
@@butterflypooo I’m not sure if I’d agree with the “All the POCs are side characters” thing. Yeah Eleanor is the main pov character but it’s not like Chidi Tahani and Jason are any less important. Secondary protagonists at worst, definitely not side characters. It’s an ensemble cast, like a dnd party where they’re all main characters in my opinion. … I do think the Bi thing is a little weird tho, you’re hella right on that. Like, I get that people can be like that and it doesn’t have to be a big deal or at all serious.. like I’m into guys sometimes but usually only animated peoples so I’m mostly gay but it is a little strange. I think the most they did is the simulation with Simon.
@@custardoftheeggvariety2062 As far as bi representation goes, it is superficial and easily forgotten by the audience. There was the simulation and otherwise she said some women were hot, but every time she talks about her past relationships or future prospects for love (or how she feels unworthy mostly) it’s ALWAYS discussed by her as if she will only be romantically interested in men. The “bi rep” was just queer baiting. I guess u have a point that the other characters do have character arcs of their own, but I still consider them side characters. The typical “POC best friend” trope that we’ve seen to death. Anyway, I hope Tyler doesn’t read this bc of spoilers XD.
As a Homeless American this season always hits me hard. Very few actual resources to help someone like me. People always say "get a job" yes but we can't. No one hires homeless people. Can't clean up before work, no place to keep work clothing. $FloomFrost
At first i was so excited, is he drinking a Carl's Special, Love that, but Carlsburg regular is not bad either. Can't get the Special here in the colonies :-)
LMAO To "stiff a waitress" is to not tip your food server in a restaurant. It's an extremely dick move here in America because food servers only get paid enough from the restaurant to cover their estimated taxes, so they typically don't get a paycheck from the restaurant at all (or they get one that's so small it's irrelevant).
One of the writers on the first season was Oluademilade Adejuyigbe known professionally as Demi. I totally agree with you that making a joke of the not being willing to pronounce another name thing normalizes it. I also am sure this came from a very lived experience 🤷♀️
huh? 😅 it's literally the opposite because it's critiquing and pointing out how rude that is to do to someone. so people can't even portray a character being an awful person and portraying something that real people do in real life, like microaggressions? how are we supposed to critique or point out or complain or vent about any of these issues in media or art that we make then? 😅 this doesn't make any sense. it's like saying that people of color aren't allowed to write stories with microaggressions in them when they're the ones that have to deal with those and they're literally making a story that includes what they have to go through? that couldn't be more illogical... are the not allowed to make art about their own experiences? I don't understand what you're talking about. You even said it probably comes from personal experience and STILL discounted someone expressing what they've been through personally through their art. that's wild.... the joke is literally about how Eleanor is a horrible person and horrible people don't even bother to try to pronounce people's names when they don't already know how to do it. it's making fun of and critiquing something that a lot of apathetic Americans do. like, if it bothers you that people mispronounce people's names or don't even try to pronounce them because they're apathetic then this being in the show should be something you enjoy because it's actively pointing out how bad that is?? I can't wrap my head around how you went from : "me and this guy both agree that this thing that people do is wrong." to "He puts it in a story about a horrible person doing it and I think that's bad." how? with this logic authors can't write about any people doing bad things ever? I really don't think you all thought this through at all.
Eleanor is legit a terrible person at this point, not even just normal or neutral, but that's part of the hilarity 😂 She's still Kristen Bell charming and funny so we're generally drawn to her, I think. And she has potential to be good 😁
Yeah though I guess she is more normal than the others there lol. Certainly more likely to encounter someone like her. But yes “medium” as she says but in the sense of being luke warm I would say. An actual jerk XD
It really doesn't make sense in one way that she has trouble with his name when she is hearing his French as English and, presumably, he is hearing her English as French.
It makes sense I guess in the sense that it’s a name, not a word, and she’s drunk-and it’s a little like her comment about Tahani choosing to have a British accent lol. Probably her self absorption determined not to.
nonono i agree with your first take on the name thing cause, even though she's a bad person, the show is written for people to laugh at- which does Other us as poc because it's just BIG SIGH for us not a funny thing
You're going on a long, complicated journey here. As long as people are courteous enough to not spoil in comments (you should ask them not to in the video) you're in for a ton of surprises (anything you guess will be consistently wrong). Have fun! Not a spoiler, just a tip. Pay attention to even the little stuff, especially dialogue. This show will call things back and recontexualize things very often. Something someone says early on may come back in a very different way, three seasons later. Don't obsess to the point of ruining watching, but be open to hearing and seeing things again in different ways.
This show is a journey, deep and fun at the same time. Whatever you do, AVOID SPOILERS!

$FloomFrost
If these are the questions you’re considering now, then you’re going to LOVE this show!!
Wowza first comment? This really is a poggers moment if I've ever seen one
6:18 THATS WHAT HE SAID
I mean, of course Picasso is in the bad place.
Took a sip even though you knew you were waiting for something: -3.77 points.
Damn. You REALLY like reading
Please watch Veronica Mars ❤
Eleanor is legit a terrible person at this point, not even just normal or neutral, but that's part of the hilarity 😂 She's still Kristen Bell charming and funny so we're generally drawn to her, I think. And she has potential to be good 😁
Yeah though I guess she is more normal than the others there lol. Certainly more likely to encounter someone like her. But yes “medium” as she says but in the sense of being luke warm I would say. An actual jerk XD
Seriously AVOID SPOILERS AT ALL COSTS!
Probably her self absorption determined not to.
while you are absolutely correct about the name thing, counterpoint: Poland.
Why you sounding like Daniel Radcliffe?
nonono i agree with your first take on the name thing cause, even though she's a bad person, the show is written for people to laugh at- which does Other us as poc because it's just BIG SIGH for us not a funny thing
Don't obsess to the point of ruining watching, but be open to hearing and seeing things again in different ways.
imagine being a photographer and your job requires you tell women (everyone, actually) to smile, and being sent to the bad place because of it!
No spoilers but the “too perfect” idea you’re thinking of plays into the ending
Dude that's literally a spoiler, delete this before he sees
So annoying.
