    Oh and one thing I forgot to mention is, under game settings > players and face gen, I turn off "enable baseball cards".

      A critical item for me - bogs everything down. It really should be off by default.

    One other thing I do is I turn the cash minimum off. It can allow for you to stockpile cash so if you're a team like the Pirates, you can have 30 Million in the bank and use that cash flow to help acquire players for that late season run

    There is one setting I now change when in career mode. I make Free Agency at 5 years and ELIMINATE Arbitration...I REALLY enjoy arbitration being out....it really helps when trying to rebuild over a period of 2 to 3 years and then still enjoying a couple of years of cheap rookie deals ;=)

    quick question/comment:
    Was watching a playthrough and saw a guy do something quite interesting with the trade settings. So, i'd agree with your vibe, that prospects should be favoured more, but this guy made the (probably valid) point that not all teams do value prospects. Win now teams, with huge budgets, often will trade for a guy, probably overvaluing, for a guy with only 1-2 years of production left, even maybe a bench bat, if it will improve their chances of winning.
    So he goes middle for prospect/vet favouring, BUT he goes all the way up for difficulty!
    I think if the game factors in his thinking, this might be the ideal. or maybe one tick towards favouring prospects. Super hard to actually make trades, but allowing for high rated vets to still hold a lot of value. I doubt the game does do that though. It's probably a one size fits all setting?
    I'm just getting started with this game, and i still lean towards your settings, but i did find this interesting and want to see what you think :)

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 года назад +1

      That approach makes sense. I went with heavily favors prospects because in previous versions prospects seemed easier to trade for than stars, relative to their values. One of the programmers may be able to give a more precise answer, but with the trade sliders it’s really about trying out different stuff and deciding what you think is the most realistic.

      @@pfholden thanks for the reply man :)
      Yeah, I've seen your tutorial vids and totally get your reasoning. I think I'm sticking with yours, like I said, but wanted to get your take on this approach. No way of being sure how they want it to work, or how they've applied It.
      I'm really intimidated by this game! Keep going to start my save and then not really knowing where to go with it.
      I'm from the UK. played a lot of mlb the show, understand the very basics, but this is a whole new level. Now I get how Americans feel when they crack open football manager! Haha.
      I'm going to persevere, for sure. But will probably need to accept this save is a lost cause and learning experience. I've hired some good personnel throughout the system, and added some FA prospects so far. Then going to trade away my best aging players for prospects.
      Currently watching your '21 Orioles playthrough. (My main the show save is with the Orioles :) )

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 года назад +1

      I think treating your first save as a practice is a great approach. There’s just so much to learn that you’re going to overlook things. I think my first save ever I restarted after 3 seasons or so because I wanted to start over once I felt like I understood things better. Feel free to stop by with more questions are you learn it.

    Alright, so for the last few years I have played with my inflation at -1% - 4%. I personally enjoy it. It allows for overall team payrolls to increase naturally while the stingy owners keep their tiny payrolls and the spending owners can blow up a budget for a team and take them from like the 20th ranked budget to around the 10th (most I've ever seen in like a 2/3 season jump)

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 года назад

      I'd be interested to hear what that inflation level does a decade or two down the road, if you play out the sim that long.

  • @stanleyrosella1712
    @stanleyrosella1712 3 года назад +1

    What do you think on Expansion teams draft first ? Leaving it unticked I guess is as in IRL. DBacks and Tampa should have picked last in that 1998 draft. But I might be wrong.
    Still it could have some impact if one intent to have some sort of expansion in the future. Then these selections can always be changed if the need comes.
    Yearly inflation should probably be some ticks up, the big question is how much. I think I take a long look at how it had played out in the past. I play mostly in historical saves and oh boy how the salaries have gone up over the years. Almost insane, but then that has not only been the reason of inflation. So how much inflation will play in for one getting higher salaries in a very long sim into the future I'm not sure.
    All the financial settings I would see what news comes up, and rumours about how MLB thinks for the future. The 2020 season have really screwed up MLB owners minds and we are surely in for some drastic changes. We already seen some stuff.
    Your ideas on cutting down those FA things mentioned is in my book a cool way to try out. I agree with your reasoning, lot more fun to see younger players drop into FA.
    Salary baselines of course comes into the thoughts on inflation and the knowledge how this has changed, so perhaps some changes in years ahead on that. If those numbers stay put in very long sims I think it could look a bit unnatural.
    When I don't play historical I tend to lower Generate International FA (even setting it to zero), but then I like to have as many International Leagues as possible running in my save (even if it gets a bit hard on my PC) I think those wonderkids from mostly southern parts of America should already be in those leagues. I might have gotten that wrong.
    Once I did tinker with from what nations they normally came from too, since I thought the balance was a bit wrong. It's unchartered teritory for me really
    Nice idea to go back to about 2015-16 in year, since as you say the offense the last few years have been out of the charts IMHO.
    I normally like to set the Starting Pitcher hook to the minus side. AI leave the starters on the mound just too long in my games.
    But not sure how effective it is in-game. Got some years sat on really fast hooks for starters but still see AI leaving the starter in way too long even after 5-6th inning. OK, if they heading for a no-hitter or shutout, but sometimes when I watch a game played out I just scratch my head and think when is that reliever coming in ? Many times not unitl a baseclearing HR have wrecked the game for the AI. Guess very few stoppers are selected on the AI teams.
    Great vid, since those settings do things to the game one play. Thanks

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 года назад +1

      I need to turn the starting pitcher hook down. I don't remember it being set that high as the default in 21 but maybe I'm just not remembering correctly.
      I leave expansion checked as a part of league evolution, but I don't generally start my sim with a draft.
      Let me know if you come across anything interesting for the inflation!

      @@pfholden yeah. They’re supposed to fill in for the international free agents that would get posted by NPB and KBO if you chose to not include those leagues in your world. The generated guys ask for less and are way better than real int’l FAs. The generated independent player option functions the same way.

I've heard some issues of the AI signing too many FAs and putting guys on waivers they really shouldn't; do you know if game-breaking bugs like these are fixed or should I wait longer before starting a save I care about (having plenty of fun in '21 with the rangers so waiting is no problem :D)

      I haven't seen stuff on the waiver bug for this year. Was it worse than others? In previous versions I find that the AI consistently put good, young players on waivers. In 21, Ohtani was put on waivers as a 3-times defending Cy winner.

      @@pfholden I've seen several guys on the OOTP discord say that teams like the dodgers would sign way too many relievers and then not have room on their 40 man for all of them so they'd have to dfa a couple. Prob cause the AI wants to sign two relievers so they offer six but when two sign they don't pull the offers for the rest (but that's just a guess)

    Do you have a video that explains the 40 man roster. I just got the 22 game and just learning how to play but don't understand the 40 man roster. If you move a guy from AAA to MLB does this change to 40 man or do you have to change it yourself.

    I have just started a new league -- it is MLB w 2 expansion teams one of which i will control. i have done the expansion draft. There are minor league teams for each expansion team but no players in them. Any idea how i populate those systems, especially mine? Thanks

    • @pfholden
      @pfholden  3 года назад

      I haven't done an expansion team in the last several releases of OOTP so someone can jump in if I'm wrong. But, depending on if you or the computer are signing minor league free agents, the best way to fill the clubs is to sign guys. You can also turn on ghost players in the game settings to help simplify this. Let me know if that doesn't do the trick.

    • @Deaddogseye

      Thank you. I went in and looked and noticed that under action for manage team rosters in the GM actions page there are options to let AI fill out your system and also lineups if you want. I hit that but noothing happened immediately. Im wondering if i have to wait for the end of spring training but that seems to be what i was looking for.
      on a seperate note in my 5th season with my mets franchise i won it all. i had made the series the year before but lost to the twins in 7 but this year i won it with a fairly dominant team -- 102 wins even though no hitter drove in 80 runs. But thank for all the tips. Could not have done it without you!
