@@mineghostN a what they said vs what they actually intended situation
@@mineghostN Were there any other groups who opposed the legislation?
Yup, and the principle is what matters when it comes to laws. The ACLU in America is what has kept Free Speech in America for so long. Look up their history. The ACLU supported both racist cases under freedom of speech AND they also orchestrated the Rosa Parks case which is what lead to de segregation in America.
Rosa Parks actually did it on purpose, as a part of the ACLUs plan with a bunch of lawyers, and they told her to not sit on the back of the bus no matter what, it was all brilliantly planned and orchestrated. But our schools always leave that part out and act like she just randomly wanted to sit at the front of the bus one day.
This is how freedom of speech works, it is based on principle, because basing it on opinions and current day cultural beliefs creates a tool that the government can use as a weapon by setting precident.
If you give the government the power to ban speech that *_MIGHT_* be considered offensive to most people......well, eventually the government can just claim anything is offensive hate speech and use the precedent of those laws to undermine a free democracy by banning the free speech of political opponents. People, forget, that we culture considers offensive now, may not always be offensive in the future, and offensive is *_SUBJECTIVE_* which is the *_real_* problem.
You can't give the government power to ban speech based off of some so broadly subjective, you must base on clear and consice principle that is easily applied across the board. - just like the ACLU in America supporting racist free speech even though the ACLU was largely responsible for de sergregating race in America with their Rosa Parks case they planned.
Gotta agree with them there. If hate speech doesn't count as free speech, speech isn't free.

South Africa's political situation post-apartheid is so complicated that I can't pretend to understand any of it. Each thing I learn seemingly contradicts the last
That's just South African history since always. The old Nationalists who ran the segregation system considered themselves anti-colonialist and justified segregation as a means to eventually secure independence from Britain for the segregated groups, arguing that integration would mean cultural genocide. The language of social justice, used to promote the opposite. The current government does the same when it uses socialist language to defend the neoliberal/neocolonialist status quo, which they depend on to make them rich via kickbacks. The result being that unemployment and inequality are now worse than immediately after segregation.

Why is the Union Jack upside down on the old SA flag?
Because S. Africa is in the southern hemisphere. Ergo, it would be seen as upside-down when viewed from Britain.
Bit bizarre, but apparently because the flag in the middle is meant to be like the flag-pole for the other two flags. Thus the Union Jack is "hoisted" on the right, and therefore we're seeing the back of it.
