I've never liked the U87 on vocals but I've always used it with a Neve! Maybe that was the issue because the U87 through the API is my favorite here, followed by the U47 through the BAE.
I would use both pre’s on different takes and blend them while mixing because sometimes in the mix you want a more focused and upfront vibe with the API. I also noticed the API brakes up slower than the Neve for loud sources. The API also stacks nice for vocal harmonies where sometimes I think the Neve has a lot of harmonic content which can get heavy on stacks but this would also depend on the source. I have a Shelford and API chain and I wish I could choose one but I can’t!
The bae had much more weight and body and more warmth the api was much lighter especially in the top end and low end both sound good but the BAE really has that magic vintage sparkle to it wow 🥵 🔥
Excellent and very useful comparison. Any real difference between the BAE and Neve AMS 1073DPX given they are based on the 1073? Any reason why you went with the BAE?
Your videos are awesome . I came across your channel when I was looking for some info on installing a console . I saw your videos for the ssl you have and I loved them . Stay genuine and keep coming with the great info and demos .
@@jameslugo I just got a used one based off this vid, thanks man! Oh one last question, do you know around which year yours is in the vid? Hopefully they are still building the newer ones the same.
man i want to like the sm7 so badly, but damn near any time someone shoots it out with other mics, even other dynamic mics, its usually my last pick. the 87 with the api really did the thing for me, it brings so much presence to your voice.
All three mics sound great through the BAE to me. Different sure, but all good. Probably 87 -> SM7 -> Perlman for my taste. Only the 87 sounds decent through the API, but I think it's better with the BAE. It's interesting that to my ear the preamp in these clips makes more of a difference than the mics. There is certainly some magic in the BAE 1073s. I haven't used another preamp on my voice since getting one.
SM7 fits your voice so well, that combo with Bae it’s great and then you can run guitars through Api with that mid focus, at the end it’s all about arrangement. Which one fits better on your mix? Thanks, great stuff here
I did like the API with the u 87 it did have a nice focused sound but otherwise the Bae sounded great on all the mics especially the Neuman and the Perlman You gave a really great singing voice James great test
Bae hands down on this test!
yup

Thx for sharing. Best A B test, out of anyone has done. Great TX again.

Totally agree
The BAE has a 3 dimensional quality that I like. Front to back it’s just bigger but it still retains focus…
I think so too.
BAE sounds a bit more open... anyone? (Both very nice)
I think so too.

Probably similar, I've just been with BAE forever. I did have a pair of those Neve 1073LBs and didn't really dig them.
Would you say api over bae for a bright mic?
Funny you posted this. Last week I was using a TLM103 and I liked the API more.

Thanks so much Eric.
Fair to say bae 1073 better desert island pre overall… wonder how bae 1073 compares to neve 1073
The best.
Sorry if I missed this or its been asked, but which BAE was used here? DMP? or a full module? Sounds amazing!
It's a BAE 1073MP stereo rack version.

I'm kind of with you too. SM7 never does for me.
@@jameslugo wonder how's the Api with a 67 !!
why do you have soothe on all the play back? that will drastically change the purpose sound of the press and mics?
Yeah I don't know, I'd have to rewatch the video
What a great demo! How about BAE va AMS Neve 1073’s?
I don't have any others, but I did have a pair of Neve 1073 LB 500 series and the BAE is just more of everything to me.
@@jameslugo Nice! Thank you!

Thanks
Which 47 is this?
The fet or the vintage u47?
Pearlman 47, tube
Brilliant video , class voice for recording 😊!
Be interesting to drop a Sm58 into the one of these videos for an old Ref 😊
Thanks so much, 58 is coming.

@@jameslugo Zappa reference, in keeping with the “thing” references.
Do you usually use 47/87/sm7 esque mics on most vocals? and in your opinion would a vintage u87 and an sm7b cover most bases vocally in a pinch?
I do.

You're Awesome Man! Say Hi To Dave P!
Thanks so much.
Great shootout! thanks
Thanks Warren.
What are your levels you track at. I have a bae and a 47 style mic but your vocals are super clean and balanced unlike mines
thats cause he using a cl1b
Probably around -18 or so. It seems to sound better if I'm not slamming it.
@@jameslugo you’re killing for sure
@@bsteve3981 Thanks man.
47->bae->cl1b. smooth as eggs
