Possibly used for an agricultural reason. Feces is an abundant source of Nitrogen, used in NPK(nitrogen/ phosphorus/potassium) fertilizers. If that is not the reason, it may be due to strict state regulations on water/sewage treatment facilities in a particular state, making it cheaper just to ship it to another state for disposal or processing.

Imo human sewage should never be dumped straight on the ground. It should be added to this thing called the "Genifuel" system. Oakland California has a plant that turns sewage into "bio-crude" liquid fuel by basically pressure cooking it in their patented process. There are also ok things like fly farms where flies can just... Do their thing on the poop and then the maggots/pupa are collected and cooked for fishing bait and animal feed.

This isn’t raw liquid sewage they pumped from sewage lines onto rail cars lol. It’s the sludge output from the settling tanks at wastewater treatment plants. Never heard of pressure cooking sludge, typically it’s aneorobically digested which outputs Methane (that can be burned) and liquid fertilizer which can be ran through a centrifuge or press to turn into solid fertilizer. This should all be handled on site as part of the sludge treatment at waste water plants.

Since its leaving the News and heading south, probably not. If it smell like raw sewage and decomposition, it probably is. How can this be anything but a health hazard? Check your state standards. We've got a solid waste plant that hauled in that town in Missouri and burned it after the semi contaminated "on accident" with dioxin. Then, you've got Chinese-owned Smithfield Farms liquifying pig poop and spraying it to disperse it; unfortunately, if the wind is in the right direction some people can't go outside without a rain coat.

@@rockingwithrockdog9236 Well, why not? If it is processed properly to remove toxins, it can make just as good fertilizer as that of cattle. Why are humans so wasteful? We eat good food, or at least we eat food, then what do you expect? You think your poop should be loaded onto a spaceship and shot into orbit? It really should be a circle. The main issue here is it sounds like the proprietors of the trains are, first of all, not being transparent about their business, and secondly, doing too little to prevent the spoils of their toil from stinking up local neighborhoods.

If those containers are carrying human waste, has it been processed at all? Because if it hasn't been processed then those containers should be placarded with biohazard warning signs and I didn't see a single placard. I would hope that at the very least that NYC has dewatered the waste.

They don’t process human waste in the US. They ferment it.

Yes processed through wastewater treatment is my guess. Those are not tanker cars so I'd guess dry remnants from settlement tanks
