I love how the drama between Katie and her father is so realistic. Katie is not a generic rebellious teenager, her father is not a generic boomer, they are both portrayed in the most realistic way possible. And as someone who also faced difficulties with my parents due to my college choice, this movie really spoke to me, all thanks to the realism of their relationship.
and like, most teenage “rebellions” are from a breakdown in communication between them and their parents, which is exactly what happened with Katie and Rick

it seems to be something of a family trend. When the villain was looking at the family's online history we can see the mom getting emails about the husband getting banned from Best Buy and the son getting kicked out of the science museum.

The animation style is a makeshift child between Cloudy with achance of meatballs and spider verse
And it's so freaking good??
It also reminds me a bit of the Captain Underpants movie in that it's not afraid to be stylized and leans into it.

I really enjoyed how everyone from the family had a good stablished personality and traits. I specially loved how they handled the younger brother. He isnt a brat, he isnt bland, he is just a little boy who likes dinossaurs and has social anxiety. You can tell that he doesnt have a lot of friends because people think he is weird, and thats why he is so attached to his sister, and its hard for him to see her go away. I was like "wow thats realistic"
I was a lot like him, and I still am today. Yeah, I’m the oldest in my family but I struggle with social interactions and I loved dinosaurs. He honestly might be my favorite of the 4
Yeah, I’m so tired of the trope of younger sibling just being a huge annoying inconvenience. Probably because I’m the youngest in my household.
I like that they made his interest in dinosaurs on a similar level with Katie and Rick's interests - something he clearly has researched a lot and is deeply involved in. "Likes dinosaurs" is not an uncommon child character (or irl child tbh) trait so it's nice that they didn't cut corners.
I wish they had done more with him honestly. He only really exists to give Katie someone to talk to and to serve the obligatory half-baked romantic sub-plot.
I saw the little brother and was like : Who put Liam in this movie!? who put my favorite little cousin in this movie?!
I had the honor of being one of the animators in this film and Im supper happy you and most people are liking it so much. I can tell you, a lot of love and effort went into every shot of the film, from everyone at the studio. I just found your channel and Im finding it really entertaining, your reviews are super fun. Keep up the great work!

You and your team literally did so well on the freaking animation, like it looked so much like a cartoon but had the same modern and beautiful charm as current day 3D animated movies. Excellent work and I have mad respect for the team behind this.

I watched the movie last night and I really loved it! Tons of respect for you and the other animators who made this masterpiece, it’s clear you guys had passion for the movie and it turned out great!
Sony Animation has two modalities:
- The worst and most stupid multimillion idea you've ever seen in animation
- The best idea you've seen in animation with game-changing animation styles, techniques and technology
No inbetween, and you know what, I'd take another Emoji movie if it means getting another Spiderverse or Mitchell, it's better than mediocrity
Honestly this is representative of Sony as a whole. They either have the most successful products ever or the largest flops ever with no inbetween.

this is just my opinion, but to me it did kind of feel like that, i groaned and ceinged at basically every joke cuz it was always just 2012 random humor. there were parts i did find funny tho like the furbys scene

Sony Pictures Animation is Zuko of the animation studios.
Sony Pictures Animation have made some good films before with Surf's Up and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. They were just overshadowed by the successes of other animation studios. That and the live action Smurf films and Emoji Movie were the laughingstock of the company too.

I absolutely love how you can understand both sides of the central conflict between the father and daughter. The dad doesn't want her to feel disappointed if things don't work out, and the daughter just wants support for the ambitions she has. Each has their reasons and I honestly don't think one reason trumps another.
I'm gonna need a divorce attorney, because this movie had my sides splitting.

Bruh Eric and Deborabot5000 are the best characters
funniest part of the movie is when the furby scene came on and since i use subtitles the furbies were like "wawawawaw" but the subtitles were like "THE DARKNESS IS CONSUMING ME"
But the best part is the subtitles for the furbish was there regardless of whether you have it on or not. My friend, the whole world got to experience the eloquence of the furby onslaught.

i honestly loved that the story was kinda predictable because we have had so many movies with twist villains and subversive takes that honestly this was refreshing as fuck to just have a movie where the story progresses naturally and logically with the emotional beats thrown in
Furby God screaming "LET THE DARK HARVEST BEGIN" had me in stitches, I haven't laughed that hard in ages.
That's one of the best things I've ever seen to be honest

Okay but i love how the movie shows that relationships take two and they need for people to put effort into them like they never blamed the problems in the relationship all on Katie or in the dad, they both were a little at fault and had to do their parts

This is the first genuinely funny animated movie that pushes the “technology is bad” message ive seen in a while and it never feels preachy about the message either it is just pure chef kiss
That's the thing though is when it pushed the robots bad, it also pushes robots are good. Watching the movie I never felt most of the robots were evil, minus the Furbies, Pal did it because she felt neglected and the other robot AI were following orders. And do I even have to mention what goes on with Eric and Debrohbot. I felt like this movie's stance on AI was more humanity decides what AI will be like.

The thing is, the movie is totally coated with the "technology bad" trope on the surface, but when Pal and Mark are talking and he says "wow I guess technology really is bad for you" she rebuttals with all the good things that tech has given us access to. And she's right. It's people that are bad. Tech is just a medium that humanity just projects itself onto. If everyone on Earth were simply good to each other we could live in a utopia with boundless knowledge and ability to greet one another across the world instantly (like right now). While we fortunately do have those opportunities, a lot of the Internet is pure poison because humans are just naturally shitty. The "true" villain is really Mark, because Pal wouldn't have reacted otherwise.
Of course, I don't think the movie is trying to be THAT deep, but it's just food for thought. Tech is inherently good, and could also be viewed as neutral, as a platform. The big ones who have control over it just tend to use it in nefarious ways.
I really liked how adult the kid sounded, I think it makes him way funnier than some kid who sounds like every other animated child
His voice was so unique from all the other characters as well which made it feel more animation-y. If you know what I mean

Honestly the movie was great, but my favourite part was the subtle lgbtq representation. It wasn’t the main plot of the movie, and it just felt really validating, like they didn’t make some huge deal about it, it’s normal. That’s all all want to say, good job Sony.

@@heinaghost411 There was a very quick line of dialogue that seemed to imply that she had a crush on a girl at the university, so it’s pretty clear she’s definitely meant to be gay. And the fact that they just went for it and didn’t make it a major part of her character or even call that much attention to it is great. It’s just a thing she is that isn’t even worth acknowledging as out of the ordinary.

This movie is the definition of "It had been a hot minute without a family movie thats actually enjoyable by not just dumb kids"
One thing I love about Lord & Miller's movies is that this is the third time that the protagonist of their animated movie learns to trust and love and to be loved by their father in their own special way. Rick and Katie Mitchell's relationship are extremely similar to Tim and Flint Lockwood from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

katie's character is so well written i feel like i'm going to cry just thinking about it. she's a teen character with Actual Relatable And Compelling Reasons as to why she's rebelling against her family?? she's college age rather than the younger 13-16 teen character we often see in these type of films?? she has such a fun and unique personality but still feels like an actual human teenager i could meet?? she genuinely gets along with and loves her younger brother instead of the "ew i hate my brat younger brother" trope for the 100000th time?? she's amazing!! she's a lot like riley from inside out, as in it really feels like the people who wrote these characters actually talked to teenagers and were thus able to portray them in such a sympathetic and engaging way
The part that I respected was that they coded her queer (and all the usual suspects are just gushing over that) but they didn't make it the central conflict with her family. That's smart writing that doesn't take the easy path.

Also, the man who wrote the soundtrack is none other than Mark Mothersbaugh, the man who wrote the music for The LEGO Movie and who is also the frontman of Devo of all things. Pretty sure he’s also composed for Regular Show and Crash Bandicoot as well.

I saw that and was quite pleased. Movie Soundtracks seem to be a second life for a lot of 60 70s and 80s rock musicians. Besides him, Randy Newman, Danny Elfman, and Wendy Carlos all immediately come to mind.
I'm ND and thought the siblings were good, fun, grounding representation, whether or not it's canon. The little brother systematically flipping though a phonebook looking for someone to talk about dinosaurs, and him freaking out about the inaccuracies of the dinosaur tourist trap they stopped at was great. The main character pursuing film her entire life in her own unique way just made me happily think of my own fixations, and all those little effects suggesting the movie was mostly from her perspective, suggesting that she saw the world through her filmmaking- hell, her literally saying filming was how she experienced things, was something I genuinely enjoyed.
Also as someone studying color theory this movie was a gorgeous reference
With this movie, Sony Pictures Animation post-Emoji Movie basiclly has become the guy you dont expect anything about him, but he will surprise you anyway.
I'm more interested in almost all of their upcoming films than most American animation studio these days, especially their adult animated films.

this movie made me cry like 4 times and it’s literally the silliest thing ever. it has the almost perfect balance of humor and sentimental stuff too. it was fantastic.
Honestly I loved how they cast a whole ass adult for Aaron. It adds so well to the comedy of the movie.
I genuinely want to see Sony succeed as an animation studio since a lot of other studios are dying at this point.

The fucking scenes where Rick Mitchell struggles to use a computer are the funniest to me. It just makes me burst out laughing every time I see him just crying in the corner. And it's not only that joke that made me laugh a lot. This movies has a lot of jokes that just hit perfectly. I'm pretty sure this is the most I laughed at a movie before. This movie is a fucking riot, man.

Honestly, Katie Mitchell has been the most relatable character to me in a lot of recent movies. I was also the kid who tried making my own identity, showing my parents my interests and getting them involved only to be met with everything from a sort of vague misunderstanding to straight up dismissal, and Katie showed that hurt pretty accurately for me. On top of that the forced family time in response to trying to find some kind of independence is something I lived through too not to mention the 'being the only person to understand my weird younger sibling' dynamic.
Plus we both turned out to be queer, lmao.
Watched this with the kids and by the end of it I fell in love with the dad. He is my spirit animal.

They seem to have nailed the ability to make crisp stylized animation that has personality. It’s not about how much detail you can cram into one centimeter of screen it’s about the entire picture and I’m glad they get that.

ironically this and Spiderverse are some of the most detail-dense 3d animated movies I've ever seen. The amount of tiny background gags that sometimes appear for mere frames at a time is staggering.
I started crying when the credits rolled in. I think seeing the photos of the people who made this movie made me really appreciate the dedication that takes to make a movie like this.

Honestly this is the kinda movie that doesn’t need a sequel because it’s so good but at the same time would be awesome and wanted because of the amazing universe it has and what it could do with a sequel

All jokes aside, can we talk about how “the Mitchell’s versus the machines” is a much better titled than “Connected”? Cause like I was hesitant to see it when it was called Connected but now I have a way bigger interest in it with the new (or original if you want to get specific) title.
I like how the new title emphasizes the family a lot more, and it takes the tone down on like anti-technology stuff, much like how the movie is focused on family and only some throws jokes at the internet.
The 'Connected' title has a more serious tone to it, while the "The Mitchell's vs the machines" has a more wacky tone to it which fits the movie perfectly.
Connected is very simple as a title and it reminds me of the emoji movie

Honestly, I absolutely believe that this movie deserves some sort of AWARD. I genuinely don’t think I can even describe how much I loved this movie while watching it for the first time with my family. It was pretty charming and hilarious, and I would absolutely watch it again.

A detail idk if people mentioned is that the introduction of The Mitchells made it feel like characters I was familiar with for years and watched its long running cartoon and this was the film conclusion, if that makes sense to anyone.

3:52 actually, the zoom in to the ñ is comedy gold. this is just a scene but i laughed hard i mean- they zoom in the ñ and the dad looks scared- as a hispanic it's just so funny like- he's an average white American dad, who's most likely to not know a word in Spanish if it wasn't for Dora and his childrean consuming dora content. I liked the scene where pal asked the creator for one reason on why humanity is worth saving, and he said they have the power of love, then proceeds to get kicked in the balls
While some of the meme references came off strangely, I DO think that most of it feeds into something this movie was REALLY good at: reincorporation. Pretty much every time there was some meme reference that I thought felt a little *too* blatant and offputting, it always felt like it came back later in a way that ended up really working and kind of justifying the earlier part. The gibbon video bit is probably the strongest version of that.
Actually the part in the climax where Katie gives her heartfelt speech only for Pal to be sleep-moding through it made me laugh cause it literally throws the ‘speech stops villain’ trope out the window.
Also the WiFi scene was the funniest part of the movie for me XD
