Great work guys, just so you know in the future, before you weld galvanised metal, you need clean the galvanising off the surface that your welding, that's why you're getting a dirty weld with all the spatter, and you shouldn't be breathing in the galvanised smoke as it's toxic and can make you ill, so be careful guys! But it's all part of learning 👍 and it's coming along great 👌 you can use plastic zip ties for the fork gaiters 👍
you probably would of been better of with raw steel sheet ,gal makes it even harder to weld you definatly need to clean the gal edge up before welding same as if it were painted.
Those fork boots, just use some zip ties, grab some wider than usual say 8/10 mm in black cut them with the tag in a less obvious place and, Roberts your mothers brother! it makes them simple to remove, so you can have have a quick check and clean underneath after you've ridden in the rain or god forbid washed it. Water gets trapped underneath them and rusts happily away, safely out of sight. Stuffs your fork tubes. The black zip ties are practically invisible once on.
Smaller diameter wire with accompanying drive rollers on the machine and tips in corresponding orifice sizes will allow less amperages needed vastly improving workability on the thin stuff regardless of skill levels . Any galvanized material's regardless of thickness will be very difficult to weld even when grinding off because of electroless contamination in the metal and on thin material almost hopeless to remove . That considered , you guy's did great . Keeping it , Thanks
Those are tools for tightening the handle bar bearings and the rod is for hammering out the wheel bearings and doubles as a handle for the bolt tool to take off the wheel bolts (it's a tire change and maintenance kit). 👍
good tip, when your tac welding, drill holes in the plate then just fill with weld. can you hear that thunder, you'd better run you'd better take cover yaaa. g. day mate
Mark a buddy of mine just picked one of these up cheap. I told him about you and yours, may have to remind him since we were drinking quantities. Fill those weld pits with JB weld smoothed and sanded, they'll never even know.
Could drill a few holes either side of that long underpanel and just cable tie it to the frame, cheap and saves welding, many aftermarket versions just use cable ties, saves weight too.
Welding galvanized steel is not good for your health. It releases toxic fumes and I don't want to see either one of you down from it. The end result looks good. I don't think many people close in the frame, but since it's a scrambler it isn't a bad idea. Keeps all the dirt and rocks from tearing up the electronics.
Blaming the welder! 😂😂😂 no for amateurs used are doing good. That welder is fine. Flux core welding isn't pretty usually an if you master flux core welding argon gas will be much cleaner an easy. Just change the positive an neg around on the welder. Skim some fibreglass over them top welds will look cleaner. Take care Mark.
coregas.com.au/store-finder?query=bendigo&storeType%5B%5D=depot&storeType%5B%5D=tradeNGoGasStockist don't no what regulation you have in Aus, Mark as for keeping welding gas bottles but these guys should be able to steer you right. for hobby welding. Oh yeah and if you can steer clear of the small disposable bottles they cost a fortune in real terms. I struggled for years with crap machines which taught me loads but since investing in a nice 210 amp MIG that welds mild steel, Ali and stainless I haven't looked back. So buy the best you can afford even if it means being a bit tight on other areas for a bit it will pay dividends. Also I managed to bag a new machine for £200 and some change that normally retails £499 so look out for bargains they are out there! Mistakes are great as long as we learn from the fist one!

Nice one guys. Loving the series and good on ya for having the balls to share your adventures with welding with us.
Pro tip - always disconnect the battery before welding. Hope you did that?
Yeah we actually did that! :-)

Thanks heaps for that and the Zip Ties... just Brilliant! :-)

Yeah you're right! :-)
Not only for the ease of welding, when it heats up, the galv. Gets released and those gasses are toxic

Bloody Ripper Glenn... thanks! :-)
Great job welding that Matt and Mark. Look forward to next week.😎👍

P.S. I know professional Mexicans who cant do any better !
Excellence does not require perfection - Henry James. Good job, guys.
Nice one... Thanks! :-)
Get a flap wheel for your grinder when you are cleaning welds up. You will be pleasantly surprised
Well done lads
Good job... getting err done 👍
Looks like its time to learn to TIG weld. Thank you for the vid.

A little bit of body filler (bondo) can hide any imperfections you have before paint.
Great job I like your work.
Ripper thanks mate! :-)

Try black silicone to fill in gaps. just a suggestion
Nice one! :-)
Flippin awesome lads ...... looks great
Go back in time and rivet them on. Doing good guys 👍
Well done guys ..its functional and thats what matters
Thanks heaps Jim! :-)
If you want a better finish bog and sand the welds. It will be easier to clean and prevent rust where mud sand and crap accumulates underneath.
Great idea... Thanks! :-)
Mark a buddy of mine just picked one of these up cheap. I told him about you and yours, may have to remind him since we were drinking quantities. Fill those weld pits with JB weld smoothed and sanded, they'll never even know.
Great stuff mate! Thanks :-)
That is it, does not need to be seam welded.
Great video guys! Loved watching it. Keep 'em comin' :)
Thanks Fiona! :-)
Hey Mark use gas with your mig and grind off the galv off the sheet, gassles migs suck!
Thanks Kent! :-)
How much for the fairings? Im from Canberra and would love them 😍
Not looking at selling that stuff Until we have finished the bike! :-)

The front panel i am referring too behind the airbox.
Oh that's a brilliant idea... will have to remember that! :-)
Yep got it! :-)
You chaps really need to look up "galvanize poisoning"
Yep know all about it! :-)
Looks OK to me 👍
Good Onya Keith! :-)
You can put gap filler over the welds before you paint if you the pro look
Nice one! :-)
Oh god. Flux core welding. Save yourself the shame/pain and use gas with solid wire. Also, turn up the amps.
LOL :-)

Only needed a few stich welds then seal the rest with black silicone
Bugger... oh well it was great welding practice for Matt! :-)
Get a gas mig and use carbon dioxide/argon mix gas , it works better on sheet metal . And keep the torch shroud on or gas won’t cover the weld pool.
Thanks mate! :-)
A bit of Bondo would smooth out the welds nicely. Also another vote for black zip ties.....Cheers!
Great stuff David... thanks :-)
Yes - definitely time for a new welder! So painful to watch you struggle with welding not only very thin sheet but gal as well!
Masochists.
Yeah made it a Bloody big job! :-)
Batik....method of dyeing fabric😉
Cool Bananas! :-)
Your not Jessie James so its great for a mancave build... Getting there... Cheers
Thanks heaps Toby! :-)

That tool you were looking at is a c spanner .....
I think it is for tightening steering head bearings .....

Pro tip... Body filler makes you look like a pro welder... Works for me anyway
Omfg put some fkn safety glasses on when you're grinding! Safety squinting isn't gonna save your eyes
Too True! :-)
Loves it 😊👍🇦🇺
Good Onya mate! :-)
The dying method would be batik
Brilliant! :-)
👍
thats it im comming over fer a visit so i can give ya's a crash course in welding hehehehe
LOL... good onya mate! :-)
Hahaha a bad tradesman blames his tools 😁
Not bad for a couple of noobs 😋😉
LOL... Thanks mate! :-)
I would have pop riveted to avoid all the welding lol
LOL Fair enough! :-)
dam
BUGGER! :-)
Finally got here ..... :(
Guys you really need to seek advice. Any sheetie would have told you to use 1.2 mm minimum and black sheet not gal.
