Hoodbhoy sir, what a great initiative of making Russel easy yet interesting for the masses. Its a request that we should expand this series to also cover philosophers of own land of the subcontinent. Like MN Roy, Jiddhu Krishnamurti, Chanakya, Ali Abbas Jalalpuri, Mubarak Ali, Bacha Khan, Malik Meraj Khalid, CA Qadir and many more.

As always, many thanks Dr Hoodbhoy. I read ‘ A freeman’s worship’ at the age of 18 and then there was no looking back. Russell touched many lives. A keen watcher from India.

A befitting homage to a really great philosopher. Excellent session; enriching lecture interspersed with snippets of wisdom from the great humanitarian prodigy. However, the session elicited a spate of name droppings in the comments section, which did include names of genuine thinkers, but at least one name also came up which is just not in the bracket.

The are few Professors of English literature in Pakistan and of those a PhD from Oxford in English Language & literature has been my mentor, he considers Bertrand Russell as best writer of English Language. Although Russell was mathematician by profession and one of most influential of his era however he won a nobel in English Literaure in 1901.

Excellent question from the lady re Bertrand’s opinion about wars. The good Dr couldn’t respond properly. No need to support a philosopher blindly. It’s ok that some of his predictions were inaccurate.

Pakistani's seem to be appreciating pacifism because of the name of Bertrand Russell.
We ( Indians) and Pakistani's have produced another philosopher who has guided the field in last 100 years. Mathematics has its origin in India ( including Pakistan) but Pakistanis seem to be refusing to acknowledge their ancestors.
I have huge regards for Parvez Hoodbhoy. But Pakistanis refusal to acknowledge the knowledge that our ancestors created in this land.

Sure there were great philosophers in India too but this entire revivalist mindset that we only need to look inward to find our ideals represent a very conservative and restrained way of approaching things, you and many more like you need to recognise the fact that this nationalistic approach to pursuing knowledge is very detrimental to critical thinking because this urge to tie everything in this world to India and say that everything good originated here serves no one well in the long run.

All this is educative to know about these western thinkers, but you conveniently forget about a GREAT Muslim thinker of the time from the sub continent.. MULANA MASHRIQI! I think vast majority of Pakistanis have no idea who this guy was , at par with Einstein and Russel ,if not better in certain ways.
