All you young parents watching this, let it be a lesson for you. Do not over toilet-train your children. Or else they may grow up to be like whoever stopped Lee from filming.
I called that when I saw you were filming the Masonic. I've been there and that place is incredible, but unfortunately has some serious creeper vibes. They have to keep their secrets. Good job though, Lee. You made it further than I thought you would! ❤
Do not let them bug you Lee. You did nothing wrong. We got great views of that WONDERFUL BUILDING..... only if they knew how much you love Building architecture and just like to PROMOTE it!!!!!! Also how much Mason Kitch you have.....You love their designs and pieces!!!! Again Honoring them!
In life it’s usually better to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. Keep opening those doors! Greatly appreciated by all of us that watch these entertaining videos!
Sorry this happened I was thinking of Brad too. Hope they don’t run down Lyle. And scold him. Sure makes them look bad. I’d never go there now. Stay well stay safe.
Amazing that he didn't introduce himself first, or show some ID before starting to throw his weight around like he owned the place. Clearly courtesy & good manners takes a second place to being an obnoxious jobsworth.
Incredible building and glad you didn’t get arrested! Also - I love the idea of a bass design being inspired by a manhole cover because the covers live at ground level and allow access to things even lower!
Hi Leland. Where are you "videographing?" Architecture reminds me of Midwest 1940s? Sort of like Detroit's Masonic Temple. Always enjoy your travelogues. When are you returning to our area (Villa Montelvo or Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA)? We love you and hope you are in good stead, Chris
OH! They do tours for $25 there. So maybe they’re worried people won’t pay if they can see it on your video, but personally it would make me want to go see it in person. These videos are such great advertisement and that guy could have been friendly and invited people to come see the tour they give. OH Well! Missed opportunity.
Why does everyone ASSUME the gentleman in question was a Mason? Not all employees of Masonic buildings are members. Mr Sklar’s video of the Scottish Rite in Wichita, Ks was amazing and the staff appeared very welcoming. Maybe the rudeness reflects on Detroit and not anything else.
Wow, Dude. Everyone else at every other venue has been so gracious and cool! Hopefully, Brad is OK. That area looks deserted. I thought Detroit was starting to come back? Guess not.
Lyle takes photos too. Oh well some people get power hungry when they wear a uniform. Hope the show goes well. My dad was a Mason. He wouldn't leave me his Apron and other stuff. He gave it too another Mason in his will.
How rude that guy was and unnecessarily aggressive. Artists playing these theaters should be treated with more respect. I looked it up this venue almost had it's gas and electric cut off as they owed a back payment of $430k in utilities, and Jack White paid off their $142k in back taxes.
Lee you inadvertently pulled back some of the curtain on the Wizard like Toto. God was leading, guiding and directing you. Who keeps a chain with an old padlock on it around a door in a historic venue? Its symbolic. The whole place has symbols that only the initiated know the deeper meanings of. Its known as a secret society for a reason.
Lee, if it had happened to me that guy would’ve been eating my credentials. You don’t screw with the talent or crew. In the 1980s, there was a topless bar on Sunset about two blocks from the comedy store. I don’t remember the name of it after all these years, but the guy you encountered in Michigan reminds me of one of the bartenders.
I think I commented on this earlier, but can't find it. I think I said my first thought, and then something else, and then worried what might happen after crossing the street. It sounded so ghost town like, even with a smidgen of music from way in the background. Then I heard how far you went earlier before people freaked out. Am pretty sure there was another place in a different town where no one was bothered by a similar video.
Not representative of the staff at The Masonic Temple. Everyone was very friendly and helpful last night. I met Leland by chance before the show sitting in my row talking to a friend. He's not hard to identify in a crowd! He was so friendly and gratiously allowed us a picture with him. What a wonderful show. The dynamic duo of Sklar and Kunkel were the backbone of an amazing collection of virtuosic players backing Lyle. Two and half hour show no break. Great balanced acoustics and unusual these days, lengthy story telling by Lyle between songs. An amazing night. Thanx Leland. Happy Trails to you until we meet again.
I love the Gothic Revival Architecture, a very impressive building. The Tour of the Venue series is both fascinating and entertaining and I want it to continue unaffected by today’s occurrence.
You could probably have filmed the actual theater and entrance…..but wandering around they wouldn’t like….There are ceremonial chambers…and areas where they store their ceremonial robes and objects that they would not want to be shown. After all, it IS a secret society. My grandfather was a Mason, so I know a bit about it.
So was mine, this approach by an official, to someone who has been granted full access to the building for professional reasons is ambiguous and counter productive to the more gregarious approach taken by modern Masonry.... Now that house and so much is gone, new tax payer funded arena there now.. Lots of stories..
Take a hot shower and sage yourself after the gig. Very negative energy. Truthfully Lyle should have his lawyers really investigated and or look at the contract, I feel for you. If someone did that to us when I was touring it would have been an instant phone call to either Azoff brothers. Even the Masons would not like Irving.
Are you at the Masonic Temple Theatre in Detroit? Well it looks like a huge venue and I’ll bet it’s gorgeous inside. Strange that they won’t let you film it. Kinda secretive right? Hmm 🤔

(trying again) Them Freemasons iz real funny about their thang. It's a SECRET, MAN! Oh, one other thing, knowing you will be on the way to Columbus. In Toledo, some time you should check out the Collingwood Arts Center theater. It's a beautiful old theater in that arts center that was, once upon a time, a combination convent and small Catholic girls college. The theater is maybe 600 seats or so. The only problem is that it isn't really set up for modern concert needs, that would take some money and work. It's on Collingwood Blvd. right across from Scott High School, maybe a mile or two north of the Toledo Museum of Art (quite a place itself), with a I-75 south exit that puts you right on Collingwood, the CAC just up the street. The only problem is that getting back on 75 south from there is a bit of hassle. www.collingwoodartscenter.org/ Another PS- seeing all the abandoned looking office spaces... I suspect that any office business was moved to some satellite suburb town decades ago. People yap about the ruin of the actual city of Detroit, lots of noise about "politics!", but the simple reality is that decades ago, especially after all the US interstate construction, so much in Detroit was left behind by suburban sprawl (it's the Motor City! we can just go out to the nice quiet suburbs and motor everywhere!), so... extreme deterioration from simple abandonment.
Other than Red Rocks my fave tour ever. Welcome to the Post-George Floyd world of rent-a cops who can no longer act like power hungry arseholes with a badge, gun, & body cam... See you soon.. Z.
The guy certainly could have been cordial and professional about it Lee. Can't wait to hear from Brad about his interaction with this security clown.
Masons: "We don't have anything to hide"

One of the Masonic Temple theaters is named after Jack White of the white stripes, cuz he spearhead its renovation 😊

Funny yesterday the thought crossed my mind that you may not be allowed in some areas.
The guy handled that like a real a$$hole. 👎
Geeez Lee. What a prick. I would have asked for his Boss.
All good Lee…. Thanks for your video drop! Nice building nonetheless the less.
