Really informative video... Thank You! The Falcom guys really loved their occultism! Very interesting how many great Japanese devs/publishers based their games and even company names on occult themes. IREM for example, seems to come from 'Iram: The Lost City of Giants' in the Middle East. Bydo = Body. Nice 'black magician' comment from that Falcom dev + their massive pentagram for that demon game they started out, with 🤔

It's fascinating to see this is part of where Falcom got started as a game company. Hobbyists running a computer store, making simple but entertaining short games in their downtime, where the ideas got cobbled together over years, and the game itself took almost a year to make. As far as indie and hobby devs go with their process, some things don't change since 1985. It's kinda reassuring, as someone who'd made a couple VNs for game jams before.
I am so totally stoked to see Asteka 2 in action, when you guys get the chance. Let alone Sorcerian, because the OST was a great choice for Asteka 1. :)

It's something to see for sure and all those interviews bit are really interesting ! It's crazy because between Azteka, Ys, ActRaiser or Terranigma and even somehow Planet Laika, the tandem Miyazaki / Hahsimoto always had that kinda "flair" with them. That idea of exploring the origins of humanity...
It made me nostalgic of that period of time i actually didn't really lived into.

Wow, I didn't expect you to cover this one! Great coverage as always. I agree with your end assessment, this game isn't the worst ever, but it isn't particularly good either. Some of the puzzle solutions, like haggling with the guy over the price of the gun, seem needlessly obtuse, even by the standards of the era (who would even think to try that?). Ironically, I felt the game got a lot easier AFTER entering the ruins. As far as parser-based ADVs go, contemporaries like Zarth, Princess Tomato, or The Death Trap are far better examples of the genre, imo. Heck, even El Dorado Denki is a much more.... unique take on a similar setting/plot :P
At least the sequel was much better, and Asteka II even gets a few shoutouts in the first Ys game, since both were directed by Masaya Hashimoto!

This also reminds me of 'Cleopatra no Mahō' (クレオパトラの魔宝), which gets translated to "Cursed Treasure of Cleopatra". It was developed and published by Square for the Famicom Disk System in 1987. There's a really good fan-translation for it, which you can find on romhacking. Not a '5-star, hidden gem, OMG what a discovery game!', but I did rather enjoy it. it has light RPG elements, light dungeon crawling, and a good helping of graph. adventure puzzles (and no adult content).

I hope to do it someday, but it would definitely focus on just the original game and the included scenarios. The other scenarios would get just a mention at most. I got a hold of the instruction manual for Norton Commander back in my school days, to someone that's grown up with modern computers it feels really amusing that "you can have TWO WINDOWS OPEN AT THE SAME TIME" was a selling point back in the day - judging from screenshots it was graphical enough to have a Windows 9x-style visual representation of files and folders so you'd think Windows would've figured out the whole "window" thing by then...
The same batch of obsolete books also had a TurboCAD instruction manual, half of it was just a list of all the clipart that came with the program. As in, HUNDREDS OF PAGES just showing images and listing their filename. It feels so bizarre it somehow was worth printing all of that stuff on dead wood instead of letting the user just browse the folder and preview the images, but I guess this was so long ago having an image previewer/editor wasn't even a thing yet and chonky GIF clipart was the cutting edge graphics technology... paper was simply the only thing that could contain its power....

Very cool to see the original in action! I owned Tombs & Treasure as a kid, and actually really loved it -- and didn't know until MANY, MANY years later that it was a Falcom game in disguise! It's funny, too, because the title screen for Tombs & Treasure still clearly has "ASTEKA II" printed along the center of its bottom border, it just blends in with the background so well that I think Infocom didn't notice it (or they just didn't care!). So the English version of the game still holds a clue as to its roots, but again -- I never noticed it as a kid at all. May have even gotten caught in my parents' TV's overscan, for all I know!
The original... does indeed look pretty disappointing by comparison. To say the sequel improved things (especially in the greatly expanded Famicom/NES version) would be quite an understatement! Still very cool to see how this duology got its start, as this first game is indeed a genuine rarity. I've never seen it in the wild a single time, nor have I ever known anyone else who's played it.
Regarding the overlapping windows thing, Falcom did carry this forward into Ys III (and IV) with its text windows, at least... for some reason. But yeah, as innovations go, I'm not sure that... really amounts to much of anything at all. At least they were trying new things, though, I guess? ;)
Also, super cool to hear F_T_B's voice in this! I'm glad you and he know one another, as I just discovered his channel recently and became an instant fan, and I kind of found myself thinking, he and Basement Brothers should really team up! And lo and behold... you have! ;)

Yeah, I want to! Interestingly, Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom was originally for PC-98, and was then ported to the PC-88 and other PCs. (In the 80's, it was usually the opposite: PC-88 first.) Thus, I kind of want to cover the game on PC-98 Paradise, not 88. Unfortunately, I'm finding the 98 version to be a little harder to find than 88. :(

Haha. Weird. If you look at the English wikipedia page for the game it starts with the PC-88 version, but the Japanese wikipedia page very definitely says it was originally for PC-98, and the PC-88 version is a port. It's also not difficult to find images of the PC-98 disk and case online so it most certainly does exist. :)

Incidentally, I clicked on this video specifically because I did in fact recognize the title--I've played Tombs and Treasure, which at least kinda-sorta realizes the "become an RPG" part of that dude's mission statement.

I honestly find reading older Japanese games that have text exclusively in hiragana or katakana to be extremely frustrating, since it's really hard to parse out where words begin and end (this one, at least, seems to put spaces between words, which is extremely helpful). Even if I don't know all the kanji in a sentence, usually the ones I do know are enough to get context, even if I don't know how to pronounce the exact reading.

Aztecs wiped out many neighboring tribes and cultures during their reign and they stole alot of cultural beliefs from them. Much of Aztec religion is just rebranded, Mayan beliefs... Kukulkan = Quetzalcoatl (The White, Feathered Serpent), for example. The 'Lid of Palenque' is prominently featured in this game and is Mayan in origin. The Aztecs were wholesale, genociders that at the height of their civilization's power, slaughtered around 25,000 people A MONTH! Mel Gibson did a pretty good job showing this in his 2006 masterpiece, Apocalypto 👍

2:46 Spelling error it's existence, but maybe that was in the source material? I think you're the kind of guy that might actually use spellcheck if I suggest it, the world can only take so much "alternate" spelling before language collapses.😉
Asteka but Mayan, I guess there's no sound alike word in Japanese.🤨 That is true about character legibility, I don't read kanji but I've been looking into the challenges of rendering them on old computers. Really for best clarity 2x2 tiles is better than the 1x1 Anglo characters favor, but as said character space limits and extended ROMs.
I kind of like these graphics in how sharp they are, taking what the west had with AGI engine 160x200 and bringing it into higher resolutions. I wonder if this also uses 2D vector graphics partially as it shares that coloring book aesthetic of mostly lines and color fill? Probably looks crude to most eyes but largely the tools were limited and the techniques never got a chance to refine more with newer engines with larger storage formats taking over quite quickly.
Lol yeah I didn't know this game had so much nudity in it, some might call that needlessly lewd but I'm sure they were just trying to spice up the archeology Ie. Indiana Jones is not an accurate depiction of that job.😄
