Hi James, concur, started 1969 electrical installation apprenticeships in heavy industries, flour mills, petroleum refineries and government building contracts. Last year of apprenticeship house bashing and fire alarm installations. 14th edition regulations, never heard of health and safety. At twenty three trained as a plastic moulding machine electrician. Five years later self employed as a mobile emergency breakdown electrician cover all above. Last twenty one years telecom. I came from a era opportunity was there to chop and change jobs. Completed every electrical and electronic exams related to the jobs. Now at 68 years still doing exams related to telecom industry. No complaints. Great channel.
Good topic James thought you would have had more comments, as an older electrician in his 60s my advice would be to plan for when you reach 50+ because unless you are very lucky your body starts to fail you, eyes first and electricians tend to suffer with back and knee issues. I was an apprentice in the mid 70s, a very different looking industry where most electricians were employed paye by companies, some serving a lifetime within one company and being looked after in their golden years if you get my drift, many as they got older dropped into a nice maintenance job to see them out which do not seem as prevalent these days. Today not as many electricians working paye for companies many more self employed either running their own small business or subbing to companies or agencies, I still get txts for 10 and 11 hours a day from agencies, physically impossible for me personally and who at 60 years old plus would want to be slinging conduit in all day or running around in a loft, I should have heeded my own advice but left it to late.
