Yeah trying to make every instrument sound big and full can end up with a mix that is too muddy and out of place. Narrowing instruments and finding best places for them frequency wise can end up with a good sounding mix. I usually low cut guitars around 80-140hz to make room for bass guitar and drums and it's not a bad idea to do high cuts aswell to make room for vocals and other stuff. Other way out is to not push guitars too hard into mix. Placing them back. This works too.
