    Omg, those cordon(?) steel birdies beds! I love the look of the small ones, but even more excited to see them so large!
    Also, I know neither of you wear women’s pants, so I will put my two cents in: Dovetail Workwear is an excellent line of work pants for women (also anyone else who fits women’s sizes best) with all the cool pockets and features like Jacques’ pants have. The company was founded by 3 women, 2 of them gardeners/landscapers who couldn’t find women’s work pants with good features and in a high enough quality to last. Excellent not just for farmers and gardeners, but woodworkers, electricians, theatre techs, forest rangers, and even artists, florists, bakers, sewists, and hairstylists who like to wear their gear on their person! Like most women’s pants, their different styles do fit different body types, so have the giftee check them out if you don’t know their preferred fit.) I have 2 pairs, one Maven original and one Maven X, and they are amazing quality to me (plus they have 10 various pockets, a tool loop that stays flat, and spots under the front reinforcement for kneepads).

    Hubby got me Square foot gardening last week at a half price books. Read it already and love it. I purchased your book 2 months ago. Thank you for that! I've never gardened before. 4 years ago I found out I had cancer. I'm in remission now. It led to hyperthyroidism that began just before Covid hit. Fast forward to 3 months ago to finally get diagnosed. I lost 140#s and I'm feeling so much better with more energy. And I decided that gardening needed to be in my life because nature is amazing and healing. Your videos are always helpful and entertaining as well. I'm looking forward to the spring and getting some raised beds in the backyard. Meanwhile inside I'm doing an herb garden, fig tree from a cutting and looking into a lemon tree and potatoes. I can't tell you how much your videos, and Jacques, have helped me in recovering. Safe distance hugs to y'all from Dallas, TX.

    I love me a hand sickle. That thing cuts through a stalk of bananas. I’ve actually used one to take down a banana tree when I didn’t want to go get the sawzall. I’ve used it to cut roots under the ground when removing grass and weeds. Nice for pruning certain plants like when removing dying leaves from Ti plants. They’re super popular tools in Hawai‘I.

  • @theurzamachine

    15:45 Gardening is growing food optimized for space while Farming is growing food optimized for human labor.
    Gardening certainly isn't "inefficient". I'll provide an example. For me, growing 4 potato plants in a square foot yields about 340g each plant at 2g potassium fertilizer per plant. That's about 3 lbs/sqft. Idaho potato farmers only get 450 cwt / acre (1.03 lbs/sqft). Since those farmers use 3 feet rows, they are effectively farming 33% of their fields (the rest are pathways for vehicle tires / tracks). I do 4 foot beds with 2 foot rows so that's 66%. If I were to expand this to an acre, it should be able 860 cwt / acre.

    • @epicgardening
      @epicgardening  2 года назад +1

      Valid point, of course. There are cases in which garden to farm scales pretty naturally, the point we are trying to make there is that compared to traditional farming techniques, gardening tends to be less efficient for the average person, not to say that it is invalid obviously!
