- George Frideric Handel: Aria con Variazioni from the 4th movement "Air and 5 variations The Harmonious Blacksmith" of the Suite for harpsichord n.5 in E major HWV 430, transcribed for Bb trumpet or cornet and piano by Bernard Fitzgerald (1720).
Philip Smith, trumpet.
Joseph Turrin, piano.
My high school had a solo competition, and chose this because it sounded so beautiful and so heart warming. One of the best trumpet solos ive ever heard or played to this day
Playing this for solo and ensemble this year as a freshman. This recording helps a lot.
Edit 1/6/20: solo and ensemble is in 3 days, and I think I’m gonna have a stroke because I can’t get the last part right.
Update 1/9/20: I got a 1+, Holy shit!! I’m actually surprised. I didn’t think I’d get anywhere close to that!!
*DED* Yeah me too good luck
I too am playing this for Solo and Ensemble! Good luck
Thanks, I’ve had it since 7th grade. My favorite cursed image.
Congrats man!
Mine isn’t till February
Holy crap... I think I accidentally fell in love with that part at 1:27! Like, the whole song was done really well, obviously, but _that_ part...mmm. I just love the smoothness of that lick, I dunno it's hard to describe (I don't wanna sound like some kinda music snob, or something). It is...mellifluous...yeah, that feels like a good word. The mellifluity (is that even a word?) really hit me hard there.
Edit: to about through 1:36ish, 1:37...that lil' chunk
My favourite is at 3:34 :)
Because you use the word lick to describe a progression you think youll be seen as a music "snob"?
Also its a piece, not a song, cmon. D:
@@felixdittrich5469 how on earth is that how you interpreted that bro!? My worries about being seen as a snob had nothing to do with calling it a lick, the hell? 😂
It was because I'm gushing about music... sometimes that can come across snobbish, I have no idea why you gravitated toward my usage of the word lick 😂
@@JazzyUnderscoreTrumpeter Cause you used lick just before you mentioned that you dont wanna be seen as a music snob.
Lick is a progression found in jazz all over the place. Like its one of the most famous progressions in jazz. Thats why I assumed it.
Also I dont get why you think you would be seen as a snob just cause you think more than a few seconds about the music youre listening to?
And on the side: You called it a song, so there is little chance youd be seen as a snob here anyway lmao.
I like the beginning
I'm choosing this song for my 11th grade solo and ensemble piece. Shouldn't be too hard. If I choose Carnival of Venice next year like I am planning too, that will be difficult
I'm playing it for my 10th grade solo and ensemble and it's hard
Yeah, this is pretty much 7th grade repertoire for me, good luck at S&E though!
@@mistermann3455 you too
9th grade solo 😎😎😎
playing this for my 7th grade solo
Nothing better than a trumpet to play this captivating melody 🎺✨️
I can play all variations except the last now! Getting there slowly.
LMAO! Same! Phil smith makes it sound way too easy
Me too! For me I start slow with Dr. Beat 🪘 (metronome) and gradually speed up to gain security, confidence, and quality control. A wise trumpeter once said "The more comfortable and controlled one sounds on a more technical passage the faster it will sound to the listener/listener's ears on the other end of the bell 🔔! Last but not least! Have fun 👋🫂! And enjoy the process 😊! Life is too short 🫂! 😊
I thought it's impossible and now I am practicing carnival in veniece
can you play the last one now
Var.0 - 0:00 Var.3 - 2:49 (3:07)

'characteristically Beautiful, with the capital 'B.' (Thanks so much!!)
Ah, brings me back to university recital days. I played this in my first year.
I have to play this for my solo and I'm freaking out
It's pretty standard repertoire
im playing it in 30 minuts for an 8th grade audition lol
Love it! Thank you for sharing this!
God Bless HIM , the one and only Phil Smith
Glorioso handel in trumpet.
Excelente👍🏽 Muy bien interpretada👏🏼
This was such a beautiful piece I played in my freshman year for solo an ensemble. I almost cried when I got to the 2nd page, the key tip is to have smooth slurs and tuning the high notes and especially DYNAMICS.And ofc facility and vibrato works too.
Absolutely amazing!! 😍
Perfect

Simply marvelous. Wonderfully performed!
Does this count as a trumpet standard solo piece?
Yes.
I’m eating up my dream to play this in my church
Songs beautiful, went to state last year for it. Going this year for Clarkes carnival of venice.
Played this for my jury my freshman year of college

Is Phil Smith playing this on cornet? Sounds like it to me. Just wondering.
Definitely is.
Anyone know where to get the Piano part for Accompaniment?

last arrange it beautiful!!
i miss this piece, i never played it on solo cuz i switched to Bride of the waves than this.
How do you hit the high Ds in Bride? I can never seem to hit them when I go for them.
@@mattiehuber8933 Can you usually hit them when practice scales and whatnot? If so then biggest problem is usually hesitation due to being unsure if you'll hit the note. If not as with anything practice. As one of my professor taught me once "a basketball player doesnt approach a basket shot thinking "will I make this shot?" they approach knowing they know how to. Same thing applies to playing your instrument."
@@srorasco1 Thank you so much. The basketball player analogy really helped, and I hope things will improve. Thank you so much.
My lesson teacher just assigned me this song to play at a solo competition. I really love this piece even though it will definitely be a challenge because I’m in the 8th grade. Wish me luck in my competition!

What grade would this be considered if I chose to do this for S&E?
It's a group one piece
I played this my freshman year
It's a class A piece
This grade would count as a 1 and a class A
For those who don't know Phil Smith, here's his story:
Phil Smith was lead trumpet of the New York philharmonic from 1988-2014 until he had an extremely rare mental condition which caused him to forget how to play the trumpet. He couldn't remember how to hold a trumpet, form an embouchure, or use air support. When he went to a doctor to see if they could fix his condition, they basically told him to give up and pursue another profession. This guy, whose entire life had been dedicated to playing the trumpet, who was probably the best trumpet player in the entire world at the time, had just been told to give up playing the trumpet forever. He left the doctor and sat in his car, alone, in the middle of New York City for two hours crying, because music was his heart and soul and it had just been so tragically ripped away from him. But he refused to take the doctor's advice, and instead reached out to his colleagues and quite literally started from nothing. He practiced simply blowing air for months before he even touched a trumpet, not knowing if he'd ever be able to play it again. And obviously, after listening to this recording, it paid off: while he may not be as phenomenal as he was in his prime, he's certainly an amazing trumpet player with a truly amazing story.
Ascobal This is pure fiction. Philip Smith has never had any serious injury or form of dementia ever. He is now teaching since his retirement in 2014 from the New York Philharmonic. Philip Smith was initially taught by his father Derek Smith also an accomplished cornetist. Both were very active salvation army members.
Charles Salzmann I’m sorry, I misremembered something here! After some research I found out that it was focal dystonia (embouchure collapse) that he was affected by, not a form of dementia. Warren Deck was also diagnosed with focal dystonia in 2001, I believe.
Ah, after some more research (namely, reading more in depth about focal dystonia) focal dystonia is a rare mental condition!
Austin Martín Hernández After some surface level research (googling “Phil Smith focal dystonia”), I can assure you that he was, in fact, diagnosed with focal dystonia. If you don’t believe me, read this:
