- Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called Dr Basem Naim, a member of the Hamas political bureau to express his condolences following the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran today.
In the five-minute conversation, Anwar told Dr Basem that Malaysian ministers were in a cabinet meeting and were shocked by the news.

Guys, in the Middle East conflict, it will go on till the last days. If we continue to take sides, it will affect the unity of the people in Malaysia -- which is already very fragile -- as well. Why should we allow this age-old issue to further tear down the social fabric of our nation. I am speaking to all of you as well as to DS PMX who is PM of a country with its diversities, in which lies its strengths as well. You don't need to accuse me of being his apologist. Maybe some day I can be his apologist if he agrees to pay me RM1 billion a month.
While I can understand why PMX wants to broadcast this, and willing to put his position on the altar, for the sake of solidarity, I agree some things are better done quietly. For the rest of us, please hold your peace and reason things out. Don't take the opportunity to vent out your anger over all your past hurts (some of you were probably working in civil service and could not speak up it). If we continue with this, we will get nowhere as a nation.
In every conflict, the moment we take sides, we are building towards another world war. Who suffers? There are no winners or losers, but thousands if not millions of lives sacrificed on the altar. Your wife or your children may be victims of another world war.
I am familiar with Hebrew as a language, but that does not make me a Zionist. We have to say away from generalisation. My learning of the Old Testament Hebrew is to better understand the scriptures. Modern Hebrew is totally alien to me. In the OT, Israel also sinned, and they, too, came under the judgement of God. No difference today. Moreover we have secular Jews, ultra Jews, and Messianic Jews, and we have moderate and what some of you consider as extremists. We must not generalise or take sides.
Do not treat Palestine or Israel as homogenous. For example, there are also Christian Palestinians who suffered equally under both regimes. Just like in Malaysia, not every Malay supports PAS. There are many educated Malays who share the same sentiments as I do. What we want is peace on earth, not war, but we cannot deny that in any conflict, there will be propaganda from both sides. A lot of things that can happen, and we are not privy to it. So, don't take everything as gospel truths and become more polarised as a nation.
The best thing to do is for each of us to pray for peace in the Middle East, and work together for the betterment of our country and our next generation. You and I do not have many tens of years to go. Let's work for the sake of our chidlren, and their children.
Malaysia already sided with Palestine since day 1 when we are a nation of ourself in 1957. So social fabric being affected is not a big issue actually.
