- Chandra Mohan Jain was born in Madhya Pradesh, central India, in 1931. In his school years, he was a gifted and rebellious student, and gained a reputation as a formidable debater. He received the Sanskrit sobriquet "Rajneesh", meaning "Lord of the Night". He became critical of traditional religion, took an interest in many methods to expand consciousness, especially yoga and tantra. After showing an interest in the writings of Marx and Engels, he was branded a communist and was threatened with expulsion from school. Rajneesh stated he became spiritually enlightened on 21 March 1953 while sitting under a tree in Jabalpur. He relocated to the United States in 1981 and finally returned to India in 1985. Mahayana Buddhism greatly influenced his teaching method in the late 1990s, so he chose to adopt the Sino-Japanese title of Heshàng / Oshò, meaning "preceptor monk".
