There is nothing more wrong than pricing a drug on how important it is, and not what it costs you to make + a typical additional profit margin. It's pure greed.
I mean, you're not wrong; but - though this video may cover it later, only half done atm - what you describe IS how almost ALL pharmaceuticals are priced! E.g., in the case of Thiola & other price hikes, important context: → The company that made Thiola beforehand only managed limited production runs and often had none available: simply no incentive, as very few people needed it. → Hence, in more than a few cases, without a new company finding another use... or giving it a price hike... the medication simply disappears. Raising the price allows for more consistent availability - and in the case of Thiola, even then it _was still sold at a loss!_ → The pharmaceutical industry is my passion, ultimately - so maybe I'm biased, heh - _but:_ I think I've not *ever* seen a case wherein a pharma company does not make essential medication available, even when it requires significant losses. (Of course, this isn't *ideal,* obviously!) There are always programs for those who can't afford it, and the like, and 🤫 inside secret: → ...people don't seem to think of trying this, _but:_ if you send a heartbreaking letter about how much you love the company but you will unfortunately have to sing their praises in the grave because you can't afford their compound... ...they'll make it possible for you. It's good publicity, at relatively little cost; and, believe it or not, most of the people I personally have known in pharmaceuticals chose the field out of genuine love for healing and improving lives. Just don't call up ranting like a crazy person, heh, and they'll play ball - IME. _(FWIW, if anyone reads this someday and is unable to afford a vital medication here in the US, leave me a reply here. I can probably get you in touch with someone at most of the "big 6", esp. Merck or Bayer.)_ -------------------------------- People are really unaware how slim margins are in the industry: *1)* R&D is expensive, and less than one in a hundred compounds will make it all the way to the final trials; *2)* FDA approval has become immensely slow and expensive: we're talking a decade and $3 *billion* (with a b!); *3)* if somehow you manage to thread that needle, and spent billions, and brought a drug to market, _a._ how large is the patient population? developing a drug for a rare disease is essentially never profitable; and _b._ once you are actually producing the compound, it's only good for 20 years _at best_ - Indian generics will screw you outside the U.S. long before that, and the U.S. gives you two decades to recoup the billions spent... (...all the while you are subsidizing necessary drugs that aren't profitable at all and subsidizing patients that have no insurance and cannot pay full price, etc.) *tl;dr:* Big Pharma is a really bad industry to get into if profit is your main motivation. But, because our healthcare system is so messed up _(trick question: how many prices does a single pharmaceutical product tend to have, and who pays which... and how does this affect price?),_ and because it's such a vital, emotional area, people tend to have a more distorted view than they do of less-emotional industries with much higher margins.
@@Kveldredyou're not wrong but at the same time, like the point this video starts with. He took a vital medicine that countless people depended on and hiked its price multiple 1,000%. The reason most medical care in the USA is so expensive is primarily because of the insurance companies, and since the ACA the government. Hospitals up charge when people have insurance, and the insurance companies negotiate the price Down. They send you a bill if you are uninsured, and little old you will have very little success trying to negotiate. An example of this is I was uninsured in 2021, and was charged 180 dollars for a Covid test, then was hospitalized because of pneumonia. I was billed 75,000 dollars, so I tried to contest it, and was told I’d be turned over to collections if I didn’t pay it. I could hire a lawyer and sue, but that would cost thousands more with no guarantee. What are the uninsured supposed to do? I tried to sign up for the affordable care insurance in 2014, and my deductible was going to be 6000 dollars, and it would cost me 350 dollars a month. I could not afford that at that time, so I didn’t sign up. I was then fined by my government for being uninsured, and they stole part of my tax refund. I was in such financial trouble I had no choice, but to file for bankruptcy in 2022. My credit is ruined, I live in a motel, and drive a 25 year old vehicle with no A/C in the hot and humid southeastern United States. On a positive note I found a decent job, and have begun to rebuild my life. I guess if I ever get sick again I’ll just go somewhere and die.
Yup your right, the reason how healthcare is so expensive is because of the hospitals and doctors and the insurance companies. Hospitals and doctors offices know they can charge whatever they want and that the insurance companies will pay for it. Honestly the majority of the blame for high costs should be placed on doctors and hospitals. They really are the sole reasons why it costs so much

With Daraprim in particular the insurance companies that didn't want to pay for it just switched to another much cheaper option. There's no reason why any insurance company had to keep using Daraprim and he know most of them would switch. He was basically just milking the insurance companies who didn't care enough to switch after the price increase. If you change insurance $3 and then go to $1000, even if you lose like 95% of your insurance customers, the 5% that weren't paying attention, or didn't bother switching because so few people use the drug anyway end up more than making up the difference and you make more money.
E.g., in the case of Thiola & other price hikes, important context:
→ The company that made Thiola beforehand only managed limited production runs and often had none available: simply no incentive, as very few people needed it.
→ Hence, in more than a few cases, without a new company finding another use... or giving it a price hike... the medication simply disappears. Raising the price allows for more consistent availability - and in the case of Thiola, even then it _was still sold at a loss!_
→ The pharmaceutical industry is my passion, ultimately - so maybe I'm biased, heh - _but:_ I think I've not *ever* seen a case wherein a pharma company does not make essential medication available, even when it requires significant losses. (Of course, this isn't *ideal,* obviously!) There are always programs for those who can't afford it, and the like, and 🤫 inside secret:
→ ...people don't seem to think of trying this, _but:_ if you send a heartbreaking letter about how much you love the company but you will unfortunately have to sing their praises in the grave because you can't afford their compound...
...they'll make it possible for you.
Merck or Bayer.)_
--------------------------------
People are really unaware how slim margins are in the industry:
*1)* R&D is expensive, and less than one in a hundred compounds will make it all the way to the final trials;
*2)* FDA approval has become immensely slow and expensive: we're talking a decade and $3 *billion* (with a b!);
*3)* if somehow you manage to thread that needle, and spent billions, and brought a drug to market, _a._ how large is the patient population? developing a drug for a rare disease is essentially never profitable; and _b._ once you are actually producing the compound, it's only good for 20 years _at best_ - Indian generics will screw you outside the U.S. long before that, and the U.S. gives you two decades to recoup the billions spent...
(...all the while you are subsidizing necessary drugs that aren't profitable at all and subsidizing patients that have no insurance and cannot pay full price, etc.)
*tl;dr:* Big Pharma is a really bad industry to get into if profit is your main motivation.

I guess if I ever get sick again I’ll just go somewhere and die.
why don't you get out of that forsaken country?
I am so sorry to hear stories like this… at one time in America one could not be pursued for medical bills, in terms of credit. 😢

If taken daily, they would have covered him for 246 years, or 123 if taken twice a day.
Still more than required to cover the average life span of a person, but not by much.
Half that would be enough to last 123/62 years, depending on if it’s taken once/twice a day, and still cost about $34 million. $34 million that a poor soul that has to take the drug twice a day has to spend, and they still wouldn’t make it past 70. @@kacecrimson8297 "all the things money can buy can't fix a lonely heart" Sure it can lol, money just represents time. If you have a bunch of money you can afford to go out with people, have hobbies, make friends, all that jazz. Working 50 hours a week to get by is what makes people lonely because they don't have time to see their family or loved ones, if they even have time to have such.
This is progressively making me more and more outraged every time a medication price jack is mentioned. On god I cannot fathom how evil these people are
You'll really be pissed when you learn how much goes into cancer "research " when it could be SO much better treated. It's all about money.
Imagine saying $1000 to save your life is too cheap. And that it should cost ten times that amount.... This man has never known poverty or humility
i mean... his parents were broke, he's constantly bullied, and went to prison... so he's probably known poverty and humility.
@@sjuvanet I agree with you but...humility though? I dont see that being part of his character...at all whatsoever.

Ey! That's wild my re-upload of that video is featured in 45:32. Honestly, if I had not found that debate when it got anonymously posted on Reddit, that debate would have been lost to time. The whole thing is absolutely wild. Love your content @TurkeyTom. Keep up the good work!
What happened to your channel?
The most captivating part about martin to me isn't his "genius" or the amount of success and fame he attained , its that despite all of that he regularly clamored for the attention of strangers online. Throughout his life it seems the thing he holds most dear is his community and how they see him which to me just shows that at the end of the day he's just like them..... a loser. He may have money, influence and fame but yet continues to act like, clamor for the attention of and spend virtually all of his free time with...... losers
he reeks of insecurity tbh
Nice guilt tripping a person for social maladaptation, Mr. Winner.
he could've tunred out much better had he found himself a relationship tbh
@@dgq1940 It's almost like you can have a condition and still be an asshole through your actions. Shocking!
The reason why this man causes such a visceral reaction in people is because your subconscious picks up on the things he's trying to hide. He's always disingenuous and smug about the fact he thinks he's fooling you. And people do pick up on that, it's just hard to explain what exactly about him it is because it's instinctual. The same instinct that tells you there's a tiger hiding in the bush tells you this man is trying to take advantage of you.
It's the same feeling I've been getting from him this entire video. I didn't have access to much media when this was going on so I didn't really know all that much about it. (British too so medicine prices go right over my head.) But the fact he was smug about it. How can you be smug about ruining lives and killing people? Dang it this made my blood boil
He radiates the sheer concept of jerk

Funeral homes do this to folk everyday with predatory pricing of caskets and cardboard boxes and yet we happily fork over 1000s for a box you'll never see again. So what's the difference?
@@SophieB_Ofcl Funeral homes are often predatory but ultimately, you can say no. You can choose a different funeral home or forgo it completely and do a cremation etc
These people have no other avenue to get their medications which they need to live. There is no other option than to accept the insane prices that many cannot afford. Theyre forced into this predatory financial situation from chronic illness, and the only other option would be to...well, die.
It's also useless to bring up a separate issue like that to attempt to justify or rationalize a different issue. No one was talking about funeral homes here. It is almost completely unrelated. That doesn't mean it's not also predatory and exploitative, but people can care about multiple problems at once while giving focus to one over the other in the appropriate settings.
@@Stuart267 no he didnt he told those regular people dozens of times all they had to do was email him & they got the medicine for free! he only wanted to tax the companies any regular citizen who addressed him & provided him the prescription he gave the meds for FREE!
Issue is that when you raise it so insurance can cover it, not every insurance plan follows. I had a drug go from $50 to $1200 a month because insurance. They’re the real villains in the stories, but Martin is the mini boss
People paying out of pocket wouldn't even be a factor, I doubt anybody has ever paid for that drug out of pocket, it's nothing like insulin or epipens which people like to keep bringing up for some reason, I guess just to vent.
@@connormullin4547yeah the biggest factor is insurance was paying, the consumer wasnt and thats fine with anyone who actually educated themselves on the topic

i tried one of those programs that delete your accounts once and literally all it did was flood my email with companies telling me to delete my account myself
A lot of the time you have to delete subscriptions from your email to prove it's you, and it wouldnt make sense to give control of your email to the service so it sounds like it worked
@@ViolentlyAmerican no not really, it claims that it will save you time and delete it for you but it doesnt save you any time, and they dont ask me to prove its me, they ask me to just go to the site and do it myself, what wouldve saved me time is just going to the site myself and hitting the delete button like they asked me to do in the email they sent back, the program simply doesnt work as advertised
@@mooningmanz maybe it could be argued that its saving time by finding the sites, but at that point I'm just playing devils advocate, sorry it doesn't work and thanks for warning me and others about its quality.
My medications, that literally keep me alive due to a chronic disease, would cost me roughly a minimum of $2k (Canadian) PER MONTH. Luckily I’m still able to work as a registered nurse and have coverage… but that could change with my health and it terrifies me.
I dont know about Canada, but there are often resources that people just arent aware of. I live in Cincinnati Oh. Anyone in Hamilton County who cant afford Healthcare and doesn't have like medicaid or whatever can get their care at Univ of Cincinnati. You just have to do the renewal paperwork every 3 months. From that you are eligible for everything UC does, for free, from primary care to oncology to prescription drugs. It's an amazing program. Sometimes I see people on YT in hopeless situations, literally dying for lack of coverage. I basically tell them "move to Cincinnati. It kinda sucks, but hey, you'll live." I don't think they believe me.
are Canadians rly this uneducated on how to get insurance coverage from the government? I'm not insured I go through the blue cross. just because you're ignorant doesn't mean the resources don't exist lol
@@twigsno The system shouldn't be so complex in the first place. Cut the insurance system out entirely, just pay directly through tax dollars. Simpler, more elegant, and you can vote out the bastard who screws you.
I’m in Canada and have extremely high prescription costs every year. There is a government sponsored program called TDP( Trillium Drug Program) for Canadians without insurance and those who do, but with maximum cut offs like mine. My employer only covers up to 5k and then after that TDP takes over and is really good 👍🙂 without it I would not be able to afford my medication. They cover an extensive list of medications and it’s fairly easy to get. Their is a deductible you must reach before the program covers 100% and it is based off your income from the previous tax year. I believe if the deductible is greater than $1000 they break it up into quarterly payments, so you can receive coverage quicker. If you do end up needing help in the future you should definitely apply!
Note: TDP covers residents in Ontario, but each province has a version of this program and you can find out with a quick search on google! Hope this helped you.

Love your channel tom! SO informative and well done! Keep up the amazing job!
He openly harassed people online that he was suing…how high did you say his IQ was?
The higher the IQ, the higher the likelihood of being really, really dumb.
Iq only shows the ability of somebody to solve problems. In other news somebody can be totally socially inept and be a genius(Charles Darwin and newton are prime examples)
@@doesntmatter964 I would actually argue that IQ is simply a somewhat poor quality metric for "drive.," usually one's drive to do well on an IQ test. That's a claim I've heard from at least one bioinformatician, including that last tongue in cheek bit. Einstein would have only had an IQ around 140 for this reason. (Not that that's low, but its less than what most people would estimate if they thought IQ was problem solving ability.) Shkreli could actually have an even higher IQ, and yet, be less able to solve problems and be generally stupider.
@@peppermintgal4302 iq only measures the ability of problem solving, you can have lazy people that can solve problems(usually programmers). Is nothing to do with “drive”. By this logic the physical intensive jobs(trades or unskilled labors) should have a big iq, but they usually don’t have. Is simply problem solving. Your argument can work with autistic people, but that is more about them been focused on one topic, which gives them an bigger advantage in problem solving as a whole(the more problems you solve, the better you are in problem solving and so on)
