That was Thomas Mcquane he was in that truck with. He and Thomas cowrote the script for Cold Feet, a real offbeat road comedy starring Tom Waits, Keith Carridine, Rip Torn, Sally Kirkland, and a cameo with Jeff Bridges, and a smaller cameo by Thomas McQuane himself. Big fun. Now on youtube.
Jim really was a great writer, and a great friend. We are near Elk River, but it's the Elk River that is now called the Yellowstone River, Livingston, Montana.
ElkRiverBooks Elk Rapids is in Northern Michigan not far from where JH lived. I grew up there. I will try to visit Elk River Books one day and hopefully hear about your friendship.

Thanks for uploading. Would love to hear what Peter Matthiessen had to say as well.
I don't even want to live anymore. That's the fruit of your labor
I'm surprised more people aren't interested in one of the greatest writers ever. Thanks for posting. Are you near the Elk River? In Elk Rapids?

If I had no idea who he was, there is no conceivable way I would be able to connect this man with his writing.
This was toward the end of his life, and he was in a lot of pain . The fact that he got up there at all was heroic.
