Apparently I own a very Zen orchid. I've repotted it 3 or 4 times in the past 2 years since I recieved it, and it never gets stressed. It's up to 10 leaves now, and the newest ones are over a foot long. Not bad for a $25 orchid from a supermarket. Although I might just have an emerald thumb, since I also repotted my girlfriend's orchid which had been slightly neglected. Pulled all the old nasty spaghnum out of the roots and replaced it with a woodchip/charcoal/perlite mix in one of those ceramic pots with the holes. It dropped it's oldest damaged leaves, grew a bunch of new roots, bloomed, and now it's finally putting out the tip of a new leaf.
SAME i have adhd and i overthink about my orchid rotting or dying and repot it 4 times per week at first it's two roots rotted and now it has grown about 12 more roots with growing root tips and two more leaves!
Thank you so much Dani! I needed this education. I am new to orchids, and am devouring all your videos! Thank you a thousand times! Many blessings to you!!
Repotting is such a gamble for me. I feel like the orchid stress is inevitable. However, the longer I grow orchids, I have less stressed orchids post-repot than before. I just wish they could talk!
Thanks for the grower stress relief! Some of my orchids were showing the wrinkling and yellowing of leaves. Now I know not to panic and what to do about it. Your videos are always a treat.
Hey Danny. Last year I had a keiki with a doomed mother plant (phal) and keiki without roots. I snip off the keiki with a bit of the flower stem and buried the stem in spagnum moss and R/O water. For three months the little keiki fought to survive and finally pushed out a root and eventually a couple more.
Timely video, thank you! I felt my store- bought orchid was struggling and re-potted and it's angry with me! Already, have the first 2 issues: I'll check the medium and water a bit more
You just gave me the ID for my white mini phal… exact look, and guess what? It has terminal spike when I got it 2 years ago. It’s been growing keikis and blooming normally ever since. Thank you!
Watching these videos gives me a burst of energy and focus to water and repot…especially when I saw this one illustrating problems. For each example of the 7, I currently also have at least one example for each of the 7 symptoms.
Such a great video thank you! I got an orchid for Valentine’s Day and have been determined to keep it alive - your videos have been a huge help for me! My orchid has stopped growing for a while now - but I am hoping it is all stressed from new medium different than what it came with from the store, and a larger pot (came in a 5 inch and now in a 6 inch) I am hoping with enough plant food and light and water it will resume growing leaves and roots. Any tips to help speed up growth? Or how to promote new roots and leaves? I am not overly concerned with a new flower spike (I cut the old one after the blooms fell) as I want it to vegetate to a strong stage. When I repotted I noticed the roots were firm not mush but a bit yellow so I hope the new dryer medium in a larger pot with my air access will help prevent the roots from rotting and over watering. 2 of the older leaves are floppy and a bit leathery so I have been trying to find that sweet spot between over watering and dehydration. Thank you for helping beginners like me - I hope to be able to get more orchids in the future and care for these beautiful flowers.
Hey Danni, love your blakc and white fingernails.! oh my your manicurist is a genius. Love the vid! It's reassuring that i must be doing something right with my Orchids. The leaves are unfolding nicely. Thanks for the tip!
Solid info as usual. NOW....please stress the danger of Leca...like you, I put them in H2O to see effect on PH...WOW! significant change towards alkaline(8.5). No matter how I tried to make adjustments, I eventually had to repot my orchids (6) in sphagnum and bark so I can better grow them. I think this ought to be told in all videos, as I was blaming myself when in fact it was not me and the orchids will be set-back with repotting.
I love the polychilos phalaenopsis you have 😍 the bellina and the samera is just as beautiful! Thanks for sharing your experience and the symptoms you observed, I am really guilty of not giving quality time for my orchids so that's why some of them are compromised, like my phalaenopsis keep on producing keikis too, quite not normal for a phalaenopsis aphrodite.
LOVE your videos!! LOVE that stripe leafed orchid too! esp. since you grew it from a "baby" keikee? it's so pretty. What do you think of growing orchids ON a structure and not in orchid soil? I notice most of yours are in pots. I just have a few lovely pieces of drift wood that I really want to use. My first orchid has been with me for over 10 days now and has a new leaf growing and happy roots. NO substrate of any kind. I take it out of the stump/wood base and sit it in a bowl of bottled water for a little while a few times a day. Waiting for my sphagnum moss from that really popular online store that I probably can't name here. ahaaahhhhaa
Hey Danny! Will you be doing an update on your phal species and primary hybrid collection? I’ve been getting into phal species and hybrids lately and was wondering if you’ve expanded your collection of summer bloomers🥰
Another fun and educational video, thank you! One thought occurred to me with keikis. Some species or crosses of them being prone to creating them…eyeballing my crazy Equestris 👀 😂🥂
Thank you for this. I was thinking of contacting you somehow in desperate need. I have an orchid that’s my star orchid. She’s consistently flowering almost in time when you don’t expect it. She has grown pretty big and has been happy. However I recently had a fungus gnat issue that has damaged some of the roots in most of my orchids from the hungry gross larva. I did my best to take care of that but it’s so difficult since I live in the country. This particular orchid to my surprise has continued to produce leaves but lost a couple roots (not so bad) and has now produced a keiki on a flower spike. I left the keiki to see how the mother would react not to mention having a new plant from this orchid. I’m doing my best keeping the mother healthy but now she’s grown a new flower spike with buds and the cane that the keiki is on has routed a new spike with flowers and another one on the way. This is a bit extreme I think. Watching your video is making me believe that my orchid is stressed. Some of her leaves on the base are mildly wrinkled and new leaves at top look ok but are starting to get a little soft. The keiki has two leaves, one is two inches long and the other is about an inch. There is a root growing but it’s not long enough to remove the keiki from the mother plant. Any tips? Greatly appreciate it!
Hi Dani! I’m a fairly new orchid mother. I have kept hundreds of plants of many kinds most of my life, but had never attempted keeping an orchid. I attempted saving a friend’s sick orchid, even though I had zero experience, but I failed. That challenged me to buy one of my own, and try to keep it alive and healthy. Then I bought another, and another. I recently bought one at a discounted price from Lowe’s that appeared to be dehydrated, and to have sun burn. I repotted it about 2 weeks ago, and 2 days ago it looked a little droopy. I watered it well, and although the big leaves are better, the tiny new leaf that was growing was very soft, and came off when I was examining it. What does that mean? And will it grow another new leaf from the crown?
Good discussion about the terminal spike. So what would you do with orchids with terminal spike? Do you still keep on watering as normal to produce a keili? What if it didn’t?
Got an orchid from a neighbour. Had to repot because there was mould in the medium. The three bottom leaves were getting wrinkled and floppy. It took 3 days for new medium to arrive, and I did give it nutrients....one leaf is starting to feel more full again but not a different leaf is floppy. How often should I fertilize it if I suspect it has had no nutrition for awhile?
I have three grocery store type mini phals that my mom cared for when I moved across the US. Sadly, they went WAAAAY too long between repottings and lost all of their in-pot roots. They have a fair number of aerial roots, but that's all they have. Now they look dehydrated all of the time. Wish I knew what to do for them. They look so sad.
I have one orchid that the leaves are droopy, and are not stiff. More floppy to the touch. Not sure why?? Leaves are not yellow or showing signs of thirst.
I have an orchid with just two leaves and both are yellow with brown spots and very limp. I believe it was from sun damage and rain from outside, I live in Florida, I have repotted and roots are fine, should I cut the leaves off? Thanks so much for all your videos and inspiration.
Hi, they may just fall on their own, but I would be a bit skeptical about the orchid, if rain was involved then it may be stem rot, rather than sunburn 😓
Hi, I have a nice phala. Orchid. I it was repotted a year ago and is developing very nicely since. Now I see clusters of black dots in a white substance between the roots. Do you have any idea what is it and what to do? Do I need to repot again?
Hi Danny, my daughter got me a Orchid for Mother’s Day, I found a red spider mite chomping on my leaf I took your suggestion of hair spray and it worked, I was able to get the spider out, but I also have a leaf showing long blisters What could this be?
I absolutely hate it when shops sell orchids in that horrible sponge wrapped in sphagnum moss. They never dry out, the media combo is a breeding ground for algae, molds, and even mushrooms. Yes, I found mushrooms growing on the dead roots of a newly purchased, very very small orchid. It had three floral spikes, absolutely gorgeous, but I cut them off to preserve energy. I realized something was off because it was dropping the unopened flower buds and the leaves were a bit leathery and limp, even though the media was damp.
Hi Danny. One of my phall orchids leaves are turning a light green and has this "see through" spots all over the leaves. Ive been researching for days now but cant find a clear enough explanation on what to do and what may be causing this. Please help me im desperate.
Two of my orchid's leave just started becoming wrinkly from the tips inwards and it's getting worse. On the other hand, a new leaf and roots are growing and it hasn't been repotted either. Any ideas what's wrong and whether should I do?
Hi, it might have been stem rot, which affects the axis of the orchid. Look it up and see if it looked similar, there's not much to do if stem rot settles in sadly 😓
I just brought orchids online and the roots were fine until i repot them and cut some dead roots. After a week, my phals shows exact signs like this video and the roots are rotting 😭 what should i do? 😭

Give cinnamon powder
For that i dont have any idea but for root rotting cinamon powder is best so sorry !not to worry orchids are very strong
Perhaps your Schilleriana mother plant had erwinia (soft rot)? Melting plants sounds so strange but I have definitely dealt with it before!
