for those of us who are not professionals and can't afford to buy the premium lens(es) because they are way out of my pay range (& I can't justify buying very expensive lenses for my hobby) it makes my heart sing to see a professional photographer praise the 'cheaper' lens(es). well done young Henry. there is nothing wrong with using a lens with a teeny bit less quality as for me I'm only posting to insta and fb and I only print photos to put on MY wall so it really doesn't make sense to have something I can't afford when there is only me going to notice any difference in quality. each to their own is my motto. if you have enough money to be able to buy the best go for it but if you're not going to notice and use it professionally who cares? anyway that's my two penneth. thanks Henry

I'm in exactly the same boat as you Jill. I can't afford to buy all the latest 'all-singing-all-dancing' gear either. I use a 15 year old Nikon D90 and the only lens I've got, which is the Tamron 18-200mm. It's just a hobby for me too, and I'm disabled and on benefits. So you're right, it is good when a professional photographer extols the virtues of some of the less expensive gear. Henry's a top bloke and this is a brilliant channel in my opinion.

I use newer DSLR bodies but the only "new" lens I've bought is the kit 24 to 120 that came with the first body I purchased. By going vintage, and with a bit of research, I've been to explore a wide range of lenses for a whole lot. I just bought the most expensive lens I've purchased, a 20 year old Nikon zoom micro for $550 US. By going this way I've been able to introduce my daughter to photography (she has a much finer "eye" than I do), enjoy some nice images of the grandkids, AND get her to be not afraid of manual focus. The knees and one hip don't allow me to go traipsing all over Texas like Henry and his fells, so, since my truck is carrying the weight, that's not a problem for me.

These Do-It-All lenses are a life saver for me. I'm 73 years old, have Multiple Sclerosis and use a manual wheelchair. I've been a photographer for 58 years and used to photograph professional sports. As My MS worsened, it was hard for me to get around I had to move on from active photography to less frenetic subjects. I was using a Nikon D3 with the holy trinity lenses. My right arm and hand, I'm right handed, are partially numb and lack coordination from the MS. The D3 and f/2.8 lenses were to heavy from me to operate. I moved to a D800E and a 28-300mm zoom and it was great, but over the years it to became feeling heavier and heavier. I'm now using mirror less, a Z6 and Z6II with 24-200mm & a 14-30mm. It works great. I can't carry much equipment on my wheelchair, so these lenses are great. It's great that I have a great assistant, my lovely wife. Shes very willing to help, and also not a bad photographer. She is a small person and can't carry the loads I used to. I also feel like a warrior that isn't a warrior if they can't carry their own weapons. I don't know what I would do if I had to carry a whole truck load of prime lenses like I dis in the last century.

I used to march around with a bag full of lenses, 10-18mm, nifty 50 prime, 105mm prime macro and a 70-300mm. Probably overkill but I used them all and used them a lot. Just bought a Canon R which came with a 24-105mm and took it out today. OMG the versatility is amazing. Not as wide as the 10-18 and doesn't have the reach of a 300 but does almost as good as all these other lenses. The only thing letting it down is max aperture of F4.0 but I can live with that for convenience.

Could not agree more. If you check your photographs and actually see the aperture settings you shoot at over the course of a year, most of us will find that carrying any f/2.8 lens is a waste of size, weight and cost. When I went to mirrorless, I replaced any "fast" lenses with the f/4 version and could not be happier. I can actually carry my "holy trinity" kit again. I'm hearing that sentiment from more photographers verbally, but thank you for saying it publicly. Even for portraits (the few I do), the benefits of lighter gear outweigh the loss of a bit of bokeh. And background blur is easy to do in post.

Coming from a portrait and wedding background, I own the Z 24-70 and the 70-200 2.8s. Yes, they're phenomenal, but they have their place. Recently getting into landscapes, I'm looking at the 24-200 for all the reasons you've mentioned. Your enthusiasm, vibrance, and diversity with your work far outstrips nit picking over lens quality. Never once have I ever criticised the quality and sharpness of your images. I'm here for the art, beauty, and the fun of your adventures. With a little bit of inspiration thrown in. I'm sure most here would agree they're in awe of a particular image you've created. They're not there criticising every technical flaw within the images.

I simply love these kind of versatile lenses, just as much as I hate switching lenses in the field. No one looking at the end result will be able to tell whether the photo was taken with a super zoom or a far more expensive native premium lens. That's how good they really are these days.

Good advice and a well grounded perspective. Ostensibly on your advice here, I sold off three of my Sony lenses and replaced them with two from different third party manufacturers that, collectively, are: lighter, faster, and have greater reach. Any sacrifice in image quality, which is negligible, is of absolutely no consequence to me or what I do with my photos. I wish that I had done this before. Thanks.

Henry you are the number 1 for enthusiasm , it is addictive , thank you mate.
Regarding your reluctance to switch lenses out on a shoot, try this it is a great workaround at least for me. (Z7ii)
With lens attached and camera turned on, remove the battery.
    The shutter curtain will close.
You will hear and feel that and when you remove the lens you will see that also.
The curtain is now closed and is protecting the sensor from any outside influences.
Attach the new lens and turn the camera on and you are ready to shoot again without having exposed your sensor to potential pollution whilst changing lenses.
It is not my workaround I saw it somewhere else on youTube.

That's the exact conclusion I came to, Nikon Z7II 24-200, 14-30. I primarily do landscape and nature. I teach all my students the same thing for landscapes if you're using the wide end at 24mm you're not shooting wide open, you most likely going to be at F11 or F16 or focus stacking using F8 where the lens is at its best. In addition even the "holy trinity of 2.8 lens" fall off their max sharpness at F11 or F16 anyway to the difference is typically marginal. Teaching proper technique and composition is much more important than spending big money on lens most of the time.

So many of your point resonate with me. I’ve switched to micro 4/3 and now have two lenses. It’s not only faster to just switch to the other camera instead of switching lenses, but the fact that IS faster and less of a hassle, it means that I don’t walk past and ignore as many compositions that I can’t be bothered switching lenses for, you know what I mean?

I use it when I travel to a new city for the first day. PERFECT lens for walk-around, go wide for a full view of a building/structure, or go tight in for a detail shot of the same building. I got it paired with the z 28-75mm f/2.8, I call it my "3.5 in 1 prime lens" (25mm, 35mm, 50mm, *75mm lol) which I use for street isolated subjects, night-street, and videography lens. Pack super LIGHT with just these 2 lenses for travel, love the setup.

If concerned about weight (which I am), I still see no issue carrying, a 24mm, 50mm prime. I have experienced the NiftyFifty at f/8, the sharpness is just unparalleled.
My perfect kit would be an ultra wide, 24mm, 50mm, and a 70-200mm f/4.5 to something. But maybe the Nikon is just that good quality wise.

Just picked up the Tamron 28-200 for Sony. It has quite a bit of purple fringing, which I can fix in Lightroom about 90% of the time. It is pretty sharp, except in the far corners. I wish Sony would update their 24-240, but in the meantime the 16-35 GM and 28-200 is an amazing walkabout combination in a small, easily accessible, 7L shoulder bag. Alternatively, I have my eye on a 20-70 and 70-200 combination, but I also don’t like changing lenses. And a 70mm crossover seems like that would happen quite frequently.

Fabulous selection of images this week Henry, especially loved the final image. The lens is certainly serving you well as your images week in week out is testament to that. I recently bought a 100 - 400mm lens and whilst I love the additional reach, I need to think about when to take it out as weight is certainly factor when I am using it.

That 24-200 is a great lens for landscapes, we shoot mostly around f8-11, so much lighter so can walk further, less expensive and 1 lens covers full range. Have often thought should I get an f2.8 but like you, there really is no need.

A lot of good points regarding the lenses, Henry. For the record, I always look at your images and find them to be beautiful and crisp, and instructive, because you're always explaining your thought processes. *Never* have I thought the image quality was poor. When I looked to change my system, I quickly learnt that the extra cost of "pro" lenses was tied to wider maximum apertures, and I suspect this might also be the case with your 24-200 lens - the ones you mentioned were a couple of stops "faster" than yours. Pixel-peepers can go their own way, and probably will, though it won't necessarily be forwards. Their lens isn't going to find a composition for them. By the way, I think you might be one of the few people in the world who knows the difference between "less" and "fewer"!😄

I have the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses and I bought the 24-200 because I like your results with it. The 2.8 lenses are great and I use them for portrait work, but the 24-200 has become my landscape lens for all the reasons you mentioned. I’ll never hike again with those 2.8s. BTW I picked it up used for $620 US.

Henry, I love that last image and also the panorama! You could have been in the mountains of Switzerland or Austria as well with such pictures, gorgeous! And I think the 24-200 looks like a great lens and you always take amazing pictures with it. I don't think I can tell the difference in quality with some other photographers here on RUclips, also not with those that do use the 70-200 F2.8. I just bought the 55-300 this week and I can't wait to start using it. I thought I would have to wait a while to get it, but at once there it was on a website for used products for a very good price! So now I have the 17-55 F2.8 (which is very heavy, that is a bit a downer on that one) and the 55-300, I think that is a nice combination! Yeah, and the 50mm 1.8 but I never use that one, somehow I just don't like not being able to zoom!

I know you mentioned you get 3or 4 great shots (and show them) but do you take many more to get those quality shots so you can choose the best ones etc , how many on average? Love you videos Henry , very inspiring.
Btw I purchased a new Z5 with the 24-70 mm F4 which is about half the price of the F2.8 and I love the quality it gives 👌

it's very much about individual needs and ways of working. A single lens, lightweight set makes sense when hiking in the mountains, and most shots would be taken at f/8 to f/16, so it doesn't matter if you don't have f/2.8 or bigger. Today's lenses are usually very good irrespective of price at those mid range apertures. This type of lens isn't for me though. On the margins of my landscape photography I enjoy wildlife photography, astro-landscape photography, where low light performance is important, as well as good weather-sealing. 200mm isn't long enough for wildlife or birding, and 24mm at f/4 wouldn't suit the nightscape work. I also like to photograph my dogs, who are very active, so having a lens that is decent for handheld portraits comes in handy. So I have three lenses, 20mm f/1.4, 24-70mm f/2.8 and 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 which covers almost all landscape scenarios as well as these marginal interests. If I went for a long walk in the hills, I'd only take the 24-70mm which covers most of my landscape photography needs. Your videography is fantastic by the way, and keeps improving!!!

I will admit to looking at refurbished Cannon lenses in a price range near my skill set. They are there for the purchase of valuable freedom to focus on composition. In time, yes, I may upgrade. I work only to please myself.
Then, at 13:37 the juxtaposition of textures is a powerful voice of nature. You captured a chorus of shouts from the boulders clutching the sky and frozen in stone's own composition. There's harmony there pulling at me... I went back five times to be sure! If nature put up her Stonehenge those lichen and moss crested boulders rise from tufts of emerald carpet forever. Yep.
Sold! I'd put it on my wall any day! "And the Stones Shall Speak the Wisdom of Time" on a brass plate at the bottom of the mahogany frame.

Another great video Mr Turner. Thank you for highlighting the bargains you can get without breaking the bank. I have a D800. I thought, "hmm, I'll buy a lens to cover all aspects". SO, I bought a Tamrom 18-400mm "do everything" lens. It was very expensive for me. It was the most disappointing thing I have ever bought photography wise. Chromatic aberration was off the scale amongst other things. I got rid of it, to MPB who gave me a very good price. In its place, for my D800, I bought a very well priced Nikon 28-300mm, excellent condition, 2nd hand lens, now affixed to the D800. This lens is incredible. a real beauty. I also bought a Nikon D7100, in excellent condition, as a backup, spare. It had a Nikon 50mm prime affixed to it. The D7100 with the lens attached in addition to the Nikon 28-300mm attached to my D800 cost LESS than the Tamron 18-400 did. Yes, I now carry two cameras in my pack, extra weight. But at any time, I have two cameras ready to go, no switching lenses.

I shoot with a Canon full frame and currently carry three lenses, a Tamron 20-40mm f2.7-3.5, a Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 (my favorite lens) and a Tamron 75-300mm f4-5.6. A good 20-200mm would be a nice addition.

Nikon proved that moving over to a completely new lens mount is going to allow them to introduce a new generation of lenses with never before seen quality and performance. I had used the 18-200 with my D300S and never thought highly about its image quality; versatility yes, but not image quality. This Z24-200 is a different ball game all together

Hi Henry, another grand day out and thanks for sharing. As one with short arms and deep pockets I have to stick with the "value range" of lenses. I must say I do like lenses with metal mount, but I guess that's just a bit of a fad really. I too have a more than mild paranoia about changing lenses in the outdoors for fear of the weather getting to the sensor, so I'm with you there. Regarding weight, I have heard it said that the micro 4/3 equipment can be better for those that do mountaineering due to it being more compact, and I guess the overall compromise for weight will likely see me stay in the APSC size gear ... unless I get a lottery win and can employ a team of Sherpas to carry my then GFX100S emporium up hill and down dale. Sadly, I nearly always have more demands for money than I have money!. What you did sort of emphasise ( and it is oh so true ) that you don't need to sell a kidney to be able to make great images, provided you have enthusiasm, patience and skill ... all of which you have in abundance! More great images again, thanks!

A few years ago I had the 18-300 for my Nikon. Having little kids at the time and not having to change lenses and haul a camera bag plus all the kid stuff was amazing. That lens basically reignited my photography passion. It did everything but wasn’t sharp at 300mm unfortunately.
