VHT D50 - The Cheapest Dumble Clone Ever

- For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... This VHT D50 Dumble ODS 183 clone was announced/released at NAMM 2020. I don't think any actually came to the UK/EU dealers, so I imported this one which arrived last week. Here's the first time plugging it in and trying some different tones, just straight into the front of the amp, and out via a Torpedo Two Notes Captor X (on an EVM12L speaker cab).
If you want me to do a "review" of this or whatever let me know in the comments, I can make an attempt...

I Have a Vht special 12/20 RT since 2018 and I couldn't be happier with it... Smoth and warm.. Very similar to this one 👍👍
2:52 You're entering into the Vulf dimension, John
Nice playing, as always
I used to have a VHT Pitbull Ultralead head, which was an absolute tone beast! Then it became Fryette amps (the name of the owner/maker of the amps) and they quit the Ultralead line but still have a Deliverance line for heads... And VHT kept existing but became a other brand.
So glad you did this. Man I wish that I had friends like you near where I live lmao. I'm all alone in my gear nuttery.
Just picked up this amp last night. Running it through my Orange 1x12 with celestion v30. We had a baby last week though so the volume has been at bedroom levels but damn if it still doesn’t sound incredible. I’ve been using my litigator patch on helix as my go to for tone for the last year but it feels so good to have something with tubes again lol
Hi, do you still like it a year on? I'm planning to order one soon and would like some owners opinions. Cheers
@@geomusicmove was a great amp and I enjoyed it, but I sold it a few months ago. As a full time gigging musician, modelers make more sense for my use case. Got tired of taking amps to gigs when I have helix patches that do the same thing in live and studio settings.
@@ChandlerBrown That's good to hear, thanks! A couple of years back I had a Helix for about a year and tried really hard to like it. The effects and the stereo capabilities were great but the amps and especailly the cabs were a nightmare for me and I tried every single combination between them. I think those units are best to use with a real stereo power amp + cab or load box with cab sims. So I went back to tube amps.
Wow bro, very tasteful, accurate playing, great sounding amp, I want one really bad now…
I have this amp. I like it. It takes a while to figure out how to really dial in the overdrive. Believe it or not, the jazz setting is insanely useful. At first shot it sounds insanely thin until you try it with the mid boost on with the overdrive circuit engaged. My plan is to gradually upgrade components. Nice playing btw
i guess it is quite off topic but does anybody know of a good site to watch newly released tv shows online ?
@Atlas Cayden flixportal
@Wyatt Landyn Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :D I appreciate it!!
@Atlas Cayden you are welcome =)
When you have to upgrade components, than it's not a good amp.
Sounds good. I wouldn’t say it’s the cheapest though with the Ceriatone coming in a little less.
Great feel and tone.
You're the best guitarist i've ever seen. You have a real real nice style that only the biggest have! Your tone is awesome ass hell too.
Your playing sounds great even with that completely dry tone at the start of the video! I like this slow, moody groove. Things got hot towards the end! Where was the delay coming from?
Jesus you dialed it in. The lows sounded like a horn. Did you put in better tubes? I haven't liked other demos but this sounds like I expected. Please message me your settings. How you have the two drive inputs. Great playing and you nailed that D tone. Different speakers? Ok I'll buy one. Damn
If Robben Ford ate shreddibrek for breakfast...
Nice demo, wonderful playing, good amp, but needs a couple of modifications to make it better.
If you're happend to be near London you're welcome to visit my place and try absolutely killer D clones and interesting guitars. Just let me know.
Regards.
This is like real butter vs imitation butter
I like this one! Sounds good, nice find I think?
Great playing
I purchased this amp 1 week ago so I’m curious of your thoughts on this amp. ....D -Style or not , I really really like this VHT twist on its own terms. Played a real D 100 watt once before they became a thing and didn’t care for it. Very stiff ,very loud and very unforgiving . Like a dual showman on steroids. Just too huge and hard to control! Takes someone on your level to tame the beast!
John, what cab/speakers are you using here? Or is it an IR? Thx
Amp aside, I just love your playing. Can I download that skill somewhere? 8^)
Hi, I'm thinking of buying one of these instead of a Fender as I'm looking for that kiind of 'hot rod' dumble-ish tone to compliment my strat which I'm struggling to do.
So do you still ahve this amp, and if so how do you still like it? Cheers!
There are now people asking selling it for a crazy price i know its discontinued by still it was built at a cheap price i'm kind of against it
Sorry for my bad English but I would like to understand what do you prefer CERIATONE OVERTONE or this amp very convenient tsk
Hey Marco! I found this was a bit more useable at home volumes, but it has less drive than the OTS I had
Where did you buy it?
And can you try to simulate it with Helix and HX Stomp and share the patch?
Imported it from the US, I've actually already done an HX Stomp/Helix ODS preset
@@johnnathancordy that is one sweet-sounding amp - you are costing me money every time I come here. Could you possibly profile on the Kemper? And QC - only if you have time. PS are you going to be out gigging again soon?
@@Arthur_My_Dear I actually already profiled the Ceri ots50, can maybe try to profile/capture this if people want tho
Can it get into Steel String Singer territory at all? You should try to get some of those EJ dirty rhythm/alternate lead tones.
VHT has a demo where it kind of gets there, sounds kind of like a tweedy sss to me: ruclips.net/video/xn8hfxswhJM/видео.html
It definitely can. The Steel String Singer is half of an Ampeg SVT power section with a Dumble preamp. If you cut the lows and turn the volume way up, this can probably do most of those sounds on its clean jazz channel. You're just missing about 100 extra watts - 6550 tubes also have a very particular hi-fi aspect about them that is hard to match. Other than that, it can do a lot of those John Mayer esque cleans from what I've heard online.
Please...Do a review of Line6 DT 25 amp
I have a DT 50. A HEAVY, and bass heavy beast. takes some time to 'dial in.' but can roar when needed.
I I want to hear this with humbuckers!!!
Yes please!! If you have a 335 that would be nice to hear!!
I don’t feel it has that posh sound. There isn’t enough sustain and fullness. However, it may be pretty nice for its value
@@lyricbread Fortunately and unfortunately, really unbelievable amps are really rare (the same goes for amp masters)
How do you know what sustain it has? There are no sustained notes in this demo. And i doesn't lack any FULLNESS...your ears are just bad.
@@gilmacevers253 Thanks for such a kind comment, Mr MacEvers. I"ll try to improve that flaw
@@antonsydorenko7572 UTub compresses the shit out of the sound. From what i heard, it was far from what you said. I listen on studio monitors, so..
@@gilmacevers253 I agree concerning the sound compression.
However, listen to that prototype

Sounds chubby, awesome. Review please : )
ruclips.net/video/iDEstGj0b_Y/видео.html here you go!
@@johnnathancordy thanks : )
so you do not recommend them in live contest
I think there's a bunch of folks in Nashville digging them, I more meant that the Ceritatone OTS was too loud for home use, the VHT master volume was a bit more useful
Ceriatone ots20 is cheaper fanboi...
The OTS20 is not a dumble clone - per Ceriatone - "Instead of simply grafting a lower output power amp to one of our current OTS preamp topologies, we started from scratch. Conversely, it was important to us to maintain true to the OTS series, and what we found worked best is not seen in any of our other amplifiers."
@@johnnathancordy But I own the ots20, and it does produce overtones, and stands as a D style amp in its own right. All that means is that it's a relatively original design rather than an attempted copy like so many "overdrive special" type amps out there are.
Sure, you said it was cheaper, this is a video about the cheapest clone?
@@johnnathancordy I guess it works out to experience with the ots20 and a play on words. The reality is that most people buying the ots20 are looking to get into a D style amp at a lower price point, and Nik has also mentioned that. There is a side by side video of both the ots20 and ots50. Obviously it's a video, but the similarities are fairly obvious.
Also, I don't think Nik wants to take away from the mystique of the typical D style amp with that same layout they all have.
Dirt channel is gritty and full of buzz why? No carbon resistors only metallic no decent orange drop mallory capacitors.. No vishay precision resistors.. Nothing but all ceramic resistors and cheap metallic Chinese capacitors and it shows.. Your playing is very good though.. I build exact replica Dumble clones its all in the ingredients just like making a meal with quality ingredients and paying attention to the details. All the looks on the outside dont reflect the tone. I actually opened up one of these poor quality parts.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@@johnnathancordy welcome
I'm sorry but where are those components in the amps you build made in? Last time I checked almost all resistors, capacitors, cathodes, transistors, etc are made in China.
@@geomusicmove Cornell Dubilier Electronics
USA Vishay Resistors USA Mercury Magnetic Transformers America all made in America 🇺🇸. Now go convince yourself otherwise..
@@sammyrothrock6981 There maybe some I'll give you that but that's not necessarily superior quality. The actual fact is for the most part you wouldn't notice the difference between one resistor and the other.
It's not what country they are made in but the quality controls and whether generic or premium materials are used. So there can be some crappy stuff coming from America as well, in fact some pedals I've bought made in America have had very poor components and sloppy handcraft.
Nothing remotely Dumble about this amp. Nice playing though.
It's supposed to be literally a dumble schematic - but the drive channel doesn't particularly do much of that "dumble" thing as far as I can tell
Unless this amp sounds 10 times better live then no…it doesn’t sound like a Dumble. There are amps out there that sound a lot closer than this amp…but you’d better get your wallet out…🤑🤑🤑
