I have always liked the work of Master Julian Schnabel, but now I enjoyed it much more in your video and with your comments. The work you do is excellent James, thank you very much !!!
I was surprised by Julian Schnabel returning to the plate painting. Of all his work, I love his plate paintings the most. With his other work, it is either love or hate. Basquiat was his best film, he brought real insight to the artist. I sometimes feel that it must difficult to be Julian because he fights with the ghost of Basquiat of who is the greatest artist of the neo-expressionist period. Thanks for introducing me to the work of Chris Martin and Walter Robinson. I always check out the artists you mention or bump into. Walter has lived quite the life, I am surprised that I had not heard of before. Thanks James and Kate. Chris
these paintings really are a big deal. whatever they are about i think they are at least about being present in the moment, despite the obvious threat of banality in life. how there is death, tedium and also nature, beauty, life. they are straight forward but poignant, an uneasy combination. a few of them are actual masterpieces. bravo, captain.
Julian is a wonderfully creative artist. Why, because he's put his thoughtful and audacious work out there and it resonates with everyone in the art scene. Both good and bad. And you know what, he could give a shit less what anyone else thinks. That's the sign of a creative genius. That he also makes movies is just another avenue for his creativity.
I like these. Think about the "wall presence" of this work. If one of these hung on your wall, they would dominate the room. Very powerful, in a beautiful way.
What do you people want to see? Not many of you must be painters. I don't understand how one can be so jaded. These paintings are beautiful. Debase the man with your politics if you will but the objects he creates will withstand your efforts.
That's what I thought until I started to try and get engaged in the "art world". There is an incredible amount of snobbery and elitism within the upper realms of the art world, and if you didn't go to the right school, buy the right cloths, and patronize the right restaurants and clubs, you ain't crap. Pollock and Rosenquist were from a different era, when the art world was more receptive to ideas rather than social status. Don't get me wrong, I loved my time at the ASL, but putting it on your resume isn't going to get you any bonuses, and might make people look at you askance.
Because I'm out there observing in the New York "art world" every day, and have been for the last thirty-five years, and I don't want to bull-shit folks...just my opinion.
I am usually a big fan of his work. Even if you are not a fan of his work, at least it always had an edge. This new body of work does not have that edge. Nicely painted but s little to decorative for me. My favorite was the sculpture.
Hey James: Still waiting on an explanations about 'Kate' -- Im thinking it's your wife, for letting you out for this work. Next request -- Some of us checked out YOUR work and found it quite interesting -- When James Work?
it would be nice if you actually stopped in-front of a painting once in a while and looked at it. Maybe people would like to see what the artists are doing in the gallery, why they dedicate there life to painting -or what have you. WHO CARES ABOUT ALL THE BORING PEOPLE OF NEW YORK HANING OUT IN A ROOM FILLED WITH ART! Let us see the artworks.
These plate paintings don't come close to his others. The plate pieces here are evenly spread. There is a loss of depth. Missing the color too, his older plates had the Bondo showing. These look like roses growing up a trellis. Thank JK
Fragmented, neo-impressionistic merchandise which will sell nicely. Oui, Monsieur Komerz? Oui, Monsieur Schwitters! What do you think, Herr Koons? Ja, Fritz, turn on the gasss! Ah, investment grade art is so safe, so predictable.
This one where the opening performers blow away the the art featured... you should have spent the whole time filming them. Of course the big star was there, I stopped watching after that. I hope his film is better than this crappy work.
most people who inhabit the NY shows don't give a crap about the art at the galleries......because it is ugly...derivative of the human heart. It's a chase game for the cult of personality. Chris Martin is not an artist.....just like Julian.......ugly painting that is egotistical (the merits of his paintings are based on his personality like is the stategy of so many modern producers) You, James "Kalm" (hack "artist") are trying, like critics, to redeem personality not the product.
Great show
Thank you James, these reviews are so appreciated! Great shots of the work and scene....I wish you had gotten a little chat at 19:30 ;)
I realize Im kind of off topic but do anyone know a good place to stream new series online?
I like these paintings a lot. The return of the plates... good coverage of the work with all those people.

Thanks Anibal, I hope that you're also watching the Rough Cuts Channel too, lots of great content there as well...
Watching from the Canadian Prairies on a cold snowy day. Thanks for the content James. Julian is one of my favorite artists.
thanks for the video, great paintings!!!
Thank you James.

I always loved Schnabel's St sebastian, as well, great video.

Great clip
that guys painted jean jacket is the best piece in the show
Schnabel is back. Dark impressionist imagery. The big question is - How does he attach the plates to the panels?
He uses Bondo....James mentions it about 3/4 thru the video ✌️

Exquisite.
When I first saw these images I flashed on ANSELM KIEFER Morgenthau Plan paintings. Perhaps it's the black /grey ground.
Enjoyed the Kalm video more than the Schnabel paintings
Loren WTF..?..Art Students League "like in a van down by the river"? seemed to work for Pollock and James Rosenquist

kind of a sad response not that your wrong in certain circles of the art world but why did it become yours?

I hate it. Ugly. They all look the same. Why? They must weigh a ton.

Actually they are good, and I did record about six minutes of this tune...it's great music, thanks JK.
