just about to have 6 rim locks stripped back to their former glory and some nice ceramic mortice door knobs to replace the original black ones. I love old country doors. we are doing up a property out in the sticks and did toy with the idea of replacing the doors and frames but decided to have all the originals sanded and repainted. I'm glad we kept them as they now look superb!

I’m glad you kept them too. There’s just so much character in old doors. You can’t beat them.

Sorry to break the news to you, my wife and I bought approx. 17 of these for our new build. They are absolutely rubbish. After a year or so the springs started to break, on top of this the insides aren't lubricated properly so they squeak after a while, requiring them to be removed, stripped down and grease applied to the mechanism. Some of them, the mechanism inside wasn't pressed out correctly causing it to rub constantly. The shaft that fits through the square piece is much too small causing a lot of play. I honestly hope you have better luck with yours than we did with ours. We will be replacing these in the very near future. We have the same knobs though, and are very happy with those!

Thanks for your comments and feedback. Our lock is still OK, but really disappointed to hear you’ve purchased 17 and they’re not performing. That must be super annoying.

As an update, it’s been nine months and our rim lock is still performing well. No issues with it.

Don't apply grease as thus will help the dust stick abd cause the handle to squeak again. Use a graphite lubricant like ambersil

Are you able to unlock the door from the other side? Was there a hole already? Recently bought a rim lock for some Georgian doors and worried the lock only works on one side, would suggest drilling through the door to access the rim lock from the other side?

Yes, we already had an "original" hole from previous locks, and we can also lock ours from both sides, because the keyhole runs all the way through.
