    The first section is based on ‘The Wasteland’ by T. S. Eliot - read that and it all becomes clear.

  • @richardfurness7556
    @richardfurness7556 Месяц назад +3

    The song is based on an extract from TS Eliot's 1920 poem The Waste Land. A loveless affair between two office workers in a dingy seaside hotel is juxtaposed with an episode from Greek mythology. Tiresias was a seer who offended the Gods and as a punishment was made to spend seven years as a woman. Later, when Zeus and Hera were arguing furiously about which of them got the most enjoyment from making love, they asked Tiresias to arbitrate. He told them that for every 10 parts the woman has 9. That's why there is in fact more earth than sea.

      I don't think it is. It's a ghastly pretentious pile of poo. With a few exceptions, everything from that onwards was awful. Everything before was wonderful stuff especially Foxtrot and Selling England which are masterpieces or close to it.

    I was 20 when this came out. Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot had me hooked since I was 18. For me the 80's Genesis was a step down, although I didn't hate that era, I was disappointed that they abandoned their proggier style. The track that follows - Aisle of Plenty - is really the ending/denouement of Cinema Show. The Musical Box is the best early Genesis tribute band that usually plays in your neck of the woods every year and play this material at least as well as Genesis did back in the day. Without charging hundreds for a ticket. Do yourselves a favour and see them. I've seen them in Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener, Barrie and Toronto again. The music of my youth is the music of my life.

    My guardian angel must have been looking out for me, because this album landed in my lap, fresh from the oven, and became a most prized possession...along with the other prog classics, as they are now called. "Firth of Fifth" and "Dance with the Moonlit Knight" are also superior products. Great that people are still enjoying it. Figured as much.

    When you hear their first album you wouldn't expect it to turn out this way a couple of years later, hearing their popworks from the 80s when they became big you wouldn't expect they made this sort of music before. Some songs from the beginning of the 80s remembered of their former musicstyle. Artistically the early years were their best.71-74 exellent,76-78 good.

    Genesis were the pinnacle of Progressive Rock from early 70s right through to late 70s. From the 80s onwards they changed direction opting for a more commercial sound, but never forgot their Prog roots. This is a stunning album with some killer tracks, this being one of them. Steve Hackett still does this live in his Genesis shows, whereas Genesis used to chop it up somewhat and use it in brilliant medleys. Again with Phil and Chester drumming this live it is much better. You must listen to Dance On A Volcano and Los Endos from A Trick Of The Tail album, also Dukes Suite from the album Duke you will love them both. This band were superb such innovation that has stood the test of time. They just get better with age.

    Another musical masterpiece from the magical Genesis so beautiful. The early Genesis is far superior musically to the poppy stuff they produced when they basically became Phil Collins backing band. Im fortunate to have seen them twice live they are the greatest live band ive seen and ive seen many. This was definitely upmarket to what you normally play.

    Cinema Show is a Top 3 tune in most diehard Genesis fans rankings. A progressive masterpiece.
    What a lot of people don't realize is that the entire instrumental section of Cinema Show is essentially Banks-Rutherford-Collins, ie the "3 man" future Genesis from 78 on. Gabriel is done singing, and there isn't any guitar work by Hackett until the very end. That is why Genesis in concert would play the instrumental part of Cinema Show in the In the Cage medley which then segued into Afterglow. It was always a huge crowd pleaser live, and Tony Banks just owned this piece of music. But you could see how well the 3 worked together. Unfortunately as they got into the 80s with more albums, some of the longer tunes could not be played whole with all the songs they wanted to play even over 2.5 hours. The entire Cinema Show, and the entire Suppers Ready after 1982 were casualties.

    I always feel that the instrumental section of this song goes on a bit too long, but it is still pretty good. You mentioned that you have yet to hear a Genesis song you didn't like. There is one called "Whodunnit" that will irritate the living daylights out of you, but please just listen to it offscreen in the privacy of your own home. It is not a song I would like to watch on your channel. 😎

  • @kbrewski1
    @kbrewski1 25 дней назад

    Agghh....don't stop a song with a minute or 2 left in the climax!
    Selling England is not actually a "concept album" . The Lamb was really their only true concept album. Genesis did have a lot of musical reprises which would connect the last track with the first track, or an earlier track. For instance, if you would have left this playing, the short bit Aisle of Plenty hearkens back to the first track Dancing With the Moonlit Night. On Trick of the Tail, the last track, an instrumental Los Endos, reprises both Squonk and the 1st track Dance on a Volcano. On Duke, Duke's End is the conclusion of a 10 minute instrumental and reprises the earlier short vocal Guide Vocal, then segues into a reprise of the album opener Behind the Lines. But they aren't concept albums as a whole.
